I was given this book to review for The Old Schoolhouse Magazine and just have to say that we LOVE it! Though intended for 9-13 year olds I used it very succesfully as a morning devotional with my six and nine (just turned last week) year old. The allegorical situations are vague enough to be applied to situations younger children might deal with such as selfishness and gorging on candy as well as an older child seeing a similarity to drugs. Each chapter led to great discussions and even my five year old was able to respond when asked, "What does this remind you of?" or "Can you think of any situation like that?" I really enjoyed these discussions.
And the BIGGIE is that, though I use literature rich Sonlight with my daughter, this is the FIRST non-picture book my six year old son has been willing to sit still for! He runs for the couch as soon as I pull it out. (Now I'll be challenged to find something to replace it with)
I can also see this book being used wonderfully in a Sunday School class, family devotional or even a youth group. Do check it out. It's a great resource.
Here's a blurb from their site:
When Sherman, a carefree lamb in the Good Shepherd's flock, grows into a young ram, he longs for adventure and acceptance by his peers. So, against his father's warnings, he climbs "Pleasure Mountain." There he encounters strange new enticements and dangers which at first seem exciting, but finally prove more than a young ram can handle on his own. Sherman finally admits his father was right when he called it "Sin Mountain," but how will he escape and get back to the fold? And what great adventure has the shepherd prepared for him? |
