Reforming Motherhood

May. 25, 2006 - Habits part 2

Monday I shared my habit of repeating recipes (when they work for my family).  Another habit that many people do different variations of is a housework schedule.

A few years ago I divided up my non-daily chores and assigned them to different days of the week.  This really set me free.  Before I made the schedule, I felt like I was behind in my housework every day.  I felt like I could never get on top of it and I was always wanting work on it more.  After the schedule, I would be able to know that I had done what was needed and could spend extra time playing with the kids.  The house never feels immaculate to me, but it feels clean and I can handle that.  Another bonus is that on days like today when I feel so incredibly exhausted and queasy, I can tell myself that I only have to do this one job…. I can do it.  So here is the schedule that works for me:

Monday                     laundry

Tuesday                     bathrooms

Wednesday                floors (deep sweep, vacuum, & mop)

Thursday                   dust & windows/glass

Friday                        laundry

Saturday                    outside & extra & make up

Sunday                       rest on the Lord’s Day!  Yippee!

I do laundry on two different days because it keeps it from overwhelming me.  I like to watch a video in the evenings while I fold.

I love to hear and read about what other women do with their housework especially as most of my children are too young to help much.  It has been at least two years now that this system has been the best for me to handle.

Blessings fellow managers of the home,

~Amy

Thanks for sharing this- I'm slowly moving toward more of a scheduled life. (Did I mention Slowly?) It really helps!
May the Lord bless you and keep you and cause His face to shine upon you today!

I had a similar schedule when I had 3 kids under 3. I still have the same routine though now that they are older I have help with the everyday so I can tackle the extra stuff. I used to hire a youth from church to hang out with me for the day and watch the little ones while I did a project like clean the attic. I would even nurse and have the sitter burp :) I also learned the hard way to keep things simple and lowered my expectations of myself. For entertaining I would ask a friend to meet me at the park and I would bring the food - something I baked. It was a way I could entertain and not feel so stressed.
I think your plan is great!

May. 26, 2006 - I love looking at routines/schedules

I normally do something very similar. I choose a main room a day. The last 2 weeks I have started to try something new that isn't really working but am going to stick with it a few more weeks to make sure I am not just still adjusting. I have moved everything but laundry to two days Tuesday and Thursday.
Tuesday: scrub Kitchen sink, counters, stove (before or after dinner)
bathroom (during my 2 yr olds bath)
sweep and mop during first part of afternoon quiet time

Wednesday: start laundry

Thursday: dust bedrooms one wk and living room the next
wash sheets
bedrooms clean and vac (rest of house hardwood)
sills and windows

Friday: finish laundry
Saturday: outside

One Mondays and Wednesdays I make more open to do more school stuff like projects etc. But I have a weird feeling I will be going back to the daily thing becasue if I cannot get to all of it that day it throws me off.

What I used to do:
Mon. Kitchen
Tues: Bathroom
Wednsday: Laundry and
Thursday: Bedrooms including sheets
Friday: LR and laundry finished
I do the one room per day. So with bedrooms I clean, dust vac sheets etc. THe room thing helps me feel not so overwhelmed but I switched because I wanted a few free days to do more readind out loud and projects. We will see what happens. It doesn't look good for the new thing. My dh is gone and I am about to spent my Friday night cleaning cause I didn't get it all done. I would rather be reading, making cards or looking at curriculum catalogs.

And yes I just started blogging. How is Mark doing?
