Reforming Motherhood

Jun. 20, 2006 - Questions for the wise

Stacy and I were talking about all the things that we would love to ask our blogging buddies.  We think we have quite a list!  So, our plan is to periodically post our “questions for the wise” and see if we can get any good help.  So here is my first question:

Socks!  What do I do about the socks?  It seems like my boy’s socks ALWAYS have holes in them!  Do I…

1)      Just let ‘em wear holey socks?

2)      Buy more expensive socks?

3)      Buy socks every month as cheap as I can?

4)      Forget about socks?

Are we the only ones with this problem?  Is there something we are doing wrong?  Or is this just life with kids –you can always use a few new pairs of socks?

Thanks for the help,

~Amy

Well, we have the same problem and we have girls - so it's tights in the winter. They get even pricier than socks! We finally decided that no one can wear JUST socks. Here are the options: barefoot (not really in winter), socks and shoes, socks and slippers, or just slippers. This was a bit of advice we picked up from a family at church. It works pretty well, but they do get their slippers mixed up sometimes - so I see Isabelle in slippers that are WAY too small!

"Two socks make a pair". They can be holey and mismatched, but if there are two, you're set! And I don't sort them. I toss them into a basket. For heaven's sakes, they're just socks.

I read this earlier and thought "Hmmmm, we don't really have that problem". Now I think I know why- Peregrine, for as long as he's been around, will not keep socks on, even in the winter. He'll wear them when we go somewhere and shed them the minute we're home, and sometimes even in the van! Alethea, of course, is just starting to walk, so we havne't faced it with her yet. Erik is a sock snob and only wears thick wool socks from REI; they do wear out eventually but they last a long time and he always wears shoes or slippers. I pretty much wear slippers around the house all the time.
So that's our sock story. I won't claim to be one of the "wise" Moms you posed the question to, but there it is just the same.
Blessings,
Rebeca

Jun. 22, 2006 - sock solution

Hi-
Stumbled on your blog through seekingtheoldpaths - I have 3 boys known to run to the mailbox etc. in their socks which wears them out..For awhile I told them I would be charging a dime each time I caught them to put into a "Sock Fund"..It worked! and was kind of funny too because I would see them outside on the concrete in their socks and tap on the window and mouth "you owe me!! :)) No nagging, just a natural consequence that broke the habit.

Enjoy your summer with hopefully fewer socks to mend (don't you love sandal season!)

I found your blog randomly today and just about laughed my head off when I saw your holey socks!!! I see this scene everyday. I stock up on socks when they go on sale and I just throw out the holey ones as I do laundry each day.

I did find that their are some reinforced ones at Walmart that last a little longer, but really not much!
