Anyway

Posted in Poems

My friend Holly gave this poem to me a few months ago.  I really love it.  It is a good reminder to me to avoid the people-pleasing game and always do the right thing --even in the face of opposition (Galatians 1:10).  Easy to say, I know, much harder to do.  Although this poem is often attributed to Mother Teresa, it is actually from the book "Anyway: The Paradoxical Commandments" by Kent Keith.

People are often unreasonable,
Illogical and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind,
People may accuse
You of selfish motives;
Be kind anyway
.

If you are successful,
You will win some false friends
And some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank,
People may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building,
Someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness,
They may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today,
People will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have,
And it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you have anyway.

You see, in the final analysis,
It is between you and God;

It never was between you and them anyway.

So valuable. I fear that it takes much of a person's life to get to the point where one doesn't worry about what other people think. I'm much further along now, at 43, but I have a long way to go.

It doesn't affect my decisions. Just my peace sometimes.

Yes, I'm still in the process of learning this lesson too. I am less concerned as I get older as well. But you're right, sometimes it also affects my peace. I am trying to concentrate on just keeping my focus on what I feel God is calling me to do, and to rest in His peace about it -- not seeking the praise of men. This is hard for me though, because, by nature, I'm a peolple pleaser.
