Narnia V. The Bible – Which Is More To My Interest?
I was out in the garden with the girls yesterday morning, and I was thinking about the next Narnia book I was going to be reading for Sylvia’s Narnia Quiz Contest, and for my own pleasure. Then I thought, “What about the 90-Day Bible reading Challenge Amanda, Jocelyn and I are doing?”
I started it two days after they did because I didn’t know they were doing it, but I have not been faithful in reading the 12 chapters a day that I am supposed to read to read the Bible in 90 days. I tried to think of why I hadn’t been reading it. I remembered the reason: I was much more interested in C.S. Lewis’s books than I was in reading God’s books.
On Wednesday night, I came downstairs to read. I can’t read when people are talking and when the TV is on, so that was why I came downstairs to read. I sat on the couch and started to read the last of the Narnia book, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, I was reading. After I was done, I felt a pang of guilt for not reading the Bible like I was supposed to and reading the Narnia book instead, which is of no importance whatsoever to God, except that I am happy in reading it. He would rather I read His Word than read about magic wardrobes and going to the end of the world in a ship.
Yesterday morning I got up around 10, (not a good time to get for me because that’s my sleepiest time), dragged myself out of bed, went downstairs with Mom and the little boys, and went to the bathroom with them. I had to go down to the barn to feed Pemberley with Eric, who stays in the barn all the time now. Then I saw the girls’ were out in the garden weeding, so I decided to join them.
I, then, remembered that I hadn’t read my Bible yesterday either. I thought to myself, “I won’t finish the Bible in 90 days, maybe in a 100 days, if that. Well, I’ll read like crazy today! I’ll catch up to where I need to be.” But I didn’t get my Bible out ‘til I cleaned the kitchen and wrote in my journal a little and cleaned off my dresser. The reason for that was it slipped my mind when I had to take Blonde out. That is just what Satan wanted, me to forget to read God’s Word.
I don’t know why I am even reading the Narnia books actually. C.S. Lewis made it full of magic, and I don’t believe at all in magic, except in the miracles of Jesus, and they weren’t really magic. I think I only got to reading them because Eric got the “Magician’s Nephew” book (which is the first one) on CD’s to listen to, and he told me that I should read them because he was very excited about it. So when I had read the book, I had to read the next book and then you know, you have to read the next one to know what happens.
Well, I read fifteen chapters of the Bible yesterday Thursday afternoon. I am a very slow reader, so it took my about two hours to read that much, plus I had interruptions. I read four chapters yesterday morning when I got up at 7:30. I didn’t finish yesterday’s reading. But I think that it’s better to take the time to read it then to take just a few minutes and read a little of it, not knowing what is going on, getting confused because you’re reading it little by little, and then you don’t understand it at all.
I could most likely tell you almost anything about the Chronicles of Narnia books if you quizzed me on them right now, but I can’t do that with the Bible. When you can’t do that with the Word of God, and you can with the Narnia books, then there’s something wrong there. I should be reading more of the Bible than the Narnia books. I need to read more of the Bible than of the Narnia book so I can know the Word of God instead of the Word of C.S. Lewis! Don’t you agree? Well, that is all for now! If you want to, stop over at my HomeSteadBlog and read my latest ‘country’ post, you might find interesting, but be sure to let me know you were there!
Sincerely,
Lady Rachel
Ps. The Suarzs’ are coming tonight! I’m soooo excited about them coming! Sorry, the link button would not work for me, but if you would still like to enter in Sylvia's contest, go to her blog and look for the entry about it. The deadline is July 8, so you still have some time!
I hope you have enjoyed reading the thoughts of a thirteen-year-old girl from the country."You can do all things through CHRIST who strengthens you!" Philippians 4:13

That is so very true...
Too often I skip reading my Bible in the morning because I’m "too tired," but if my friends call wanting to go hiking, I'm ready to go in 15min.
It's hard to keep our priorities straight in this world, but you seem very level-headed to me.
God bless!

I'm so glad that you're keeping your priorities straight with your reading!! You're right - the Bible is far more significant than Narnia, even though Narnia can definitely be for more than just entertainment. God can speak to you through them, too. I have learned quite a lot through reading them. But, the Bible is God's Word. That's great that you are so serious about that.
Keep up the good work - and thanks again for promoting the contest. :-)
Regards,
Sylvia
PS About your comment regarding magic in Narnia, I like to think of it this way. You mentioned Jesus' miracles, and how they weren't actually "magic". Well, if you compare our world with Narnia - Aslan is like Jesus. Jesus causes all miracles and supernatural things to happen in our world. Aslan causes all miracles and supernatural things to happen in Narnia. In one world, they go by the name "magic", and in another world, they don't. Does that make sense?

thanks for stopping by my blog today. I hope you had a good time at the library.
I enjoyed reading your thoughts on Narnia vs the Bible. I struggle with that at times too. I'm trying to read the Bible through in a year and I'm about a week behind. I try to read extra, but if I get tired and find myself reading to just get it done, then I quit. I'd rather read it when I have a clear mind.
You have a good heart, little sister in Christ,
Carol

Thanks so much for coming to my blog.
I appreciate all that you have written here about Narnia vs the Bible. We can get wrapped up in "things" rather than God's desires for us, but we also can see God in those things as well. Looks like you have a good balance in handling all the things that make up our life.
You are a blessing.

well i agree on one thing we should spend more time on the Bible not narnia, but i dont really agree about the magic thing i think he made the magic just as a side thing if you really look into it there is a Biblical purpose to that book. Yea i have nothing to blog about!!!! you choose something that you would like to hear from me .

I could do the 90 day bible challenge. I am a really fast reader, but when I read too fast I don't understand things, so I often am slowed down by having to reread things, so I wouldn't be able to glean as much info by reading it so fast. I really need to step up on reading my bible, I always feel so bad, because I go days without reading my bible, and I think that that is why I struggle with so many things about God. I think that I will post either today or tomorow, so check back and I will explaing more.
Thank you very much for the comment, I never get many, but if I posted more maybe I would get more:). I always love your posts I love your writing style and everything! I hope I can write like you soon!

Yipes, the Bible in 90 days is a BIG challenge! Just remember, reading and not retaining is just as bad as not reading. I don't think I would be able to read 12 chapters a day and remember anything about it.
What I *do* enjoy reading is the One Year Bible which splits up the reading for you. Each day you read some OT, NT, Psalms (by the end of the year you actually read through Psalms 2x) and Proverbs. Some days are a bit longer than others, but they keep you reading for about an hour or two. :)

Hey Rachel! Thanks for adding me to your friends list, I added you too! Yeah, I struggled (and still do) with the same thing too...I always had the time to do everything else, but when it came to reading the Bible, I always conveniently had something else to do. I had my priorities in the wrong places. I am so glad that others have joined me in the challenge to read the Bible in 90 days, it has already been a great experience...much better than I expected!
I hope you have a fun time with the Suarez's!

Hi Rachel,
Thanks for stopping by and your congrats to my brother. :)
Thank you also for the post. I had "signed up" to do the Bible challenge, but I didn't start it when everyone else started. And I'm not even reading anything else that would take my attention away from it. I'm not going to be on track with everyone else, but I'll see what I can do. Keep it up!

Thank you for the honest and very true post-- I am most definitely guilty of the same thing. That's why I have to be careful about reading books that are not absolutely necessary-- I get so drawn in to them that I ignore everything else that is going on. *sigh*
I am definitely a work in progress!
By the way, I've added you to my friends list as well. :-) Would you mind turning on your RSS feed so I can add you to my bloglines?
Have a fantastic day!

Thank you for commenting on my blog. I like your blog. I'm not doing the 90 day thing but I do read the Bible every weekday for school, I should read on the weekends too, but I forget or just don't feel like it and I feel guilty too. Reading this reminded my that I had forgotten to read my Bible today and before I even started writing this I got up and read todays and yesterdays even though my mom had given me yesterday off.
