Your Hostess:

Hello there! Thanks for stopping by. I'm your hostess Lady Rachel, and this is the blog of a fourteen-year-old girl, who is striving to become a woman of God. The Girlhood Home Companion...

Posted in Fun stuff

I love the GHC! I just love to sit and read the articles that are in it. It’s so nice to read something about home, and growing things, rather than the latest fashion of clothes. That is what I like to read about in magazines: Home, family and growing things. I like looking at seed magazines. I love looking at the pretty flowers, wishing that I had a garden with all these lovely flowers in it. I wish I had a garden that was always weeded. I am planning on getting flower seeds and starting to plant indoors this coming Spring.

I was looking at the GHC (Girlhood Home Companion) the other night, and I saw an article written by Marmee. The title is “The Companionship of Godly Character.” At the front of the article, under the header, a picture of hollyhocks, is a poem by Charles Reade. This is the poem:

Sow a thought, and you reap an act;
Sow an act, and you reap a habit;
Sow a habit, and you reap a character;
Sow a character, and you reap a destiny.

Isn’t that just the thing to think about? The article goes on to ask questions and help you in what you need to do to change them. I think everyone has something they need to do this with; including myself!

Jocelyn wrote a story for the Little Women’s Gazette, which is at the back of the magazine. I like to sit and read through this section. Have any of you seen or read Little Women by Louisa May Alcott? The March girls have a little newspaper called “The Pickwick Society”. That is what the “Little Women’s Gazette” is based on. Here is a poem that she wrote for it:

Fine Attire...

We do not adorn ourselves with fine apparel
For that does not define beauty.
We adorn ourselves with strength, honour, and modesty
For that is beautiful in the Lord’s eyes.

We do not adorn ourselves with the ideals of this world
For they shall pass away.
We adorn ourselves with the ways of the Lord
For His kingdom will last forever.

We do not adorn ourselves with pride and hypocrisy
But we adorn ourselves with humility and righteousness.
We do not adorn ourselves with hate or fear
But we adorn ourselves with love and trust in Him.

We are but Little Women
And we want to adorn ourselves with the things of the Lord.
We are but Thine willing handmaidens.
Help us, Lord, to be just that, as we grow in you.
For there is no such fine attire as the attire
that is of the Lord.

Isn’t that just the thing to think about? I think it is!

There is another article that Marmee wrote. It’s called “Lavender & Old Lace”. Mrs. Novak starts out by taking a part of the book she wrote “The Gift of Family Writing”. Then she goes on to give some recipes on some yummy lavender treats that I will list here.

Lavender Tea Blend

1 tsp. fresh lavender flowers
2 tbsps. fresh mint leaves
2 tbsps. fresh lemon balm
2 cups of boiling water

Directions: In a teapot, combine the herbs. Add boiling water to the pot and steep five minutes. Serve with honey. Makes two cups of tea. If you want to add a black teabag  or loose tea of your choice you can add another cup of boiling water and make three cups of a stronger tea.

Lavender Shortbread

1 1/2 cups (3/4 pound) butter, at room temperature (no substitutes)
2/3 cup sugar
2 1/3 cups flour
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/4 tsp. salt
2 tbsps. very finely chopped lavender florets (fresh or dried)
1 tbsp. fresh chopped mint

Directions: Preheat oven to 325*. Cover bottoms of two baking sheets with parchment or brown paper. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, sugar, lavender, and mint with an electric mixer. Mix until light and fluffy, about three minutes. Add flour, cornstarch, and salt and beat until incorporated. Divide dough in half. Flatten into squares and wrap in plastic. Chill until firm.
On a floured board, roll or pat out each square to a thickness of 1/2 inch. Cut the dough into 1 1/2-inch squares, rectangle or rounds. Transfer to baking sheets, spacing cookies about 1-inch apart. Prick each cookie several times with a fork. Bake 20-25 minutes until pale golden (do not brown.) Cool slightly, then transfer to a rack. Sprinkle with lavender powered sugar.
Garnish with lavender powered sugar: Put 4 or 5 sprigs of lavender flowers in a sealed jar with powered sugar for a day before using the sugar.

There is another recipe I will post later. I haven't tried any of them, but I'm sure they're DELICIOUS!

Sincerely,
  Lady Rachel

Ps. I am posting a comment to Vicki on my comments. If I am not allowed to go to your blog, I will posta comment for myself, and you can see it here!

I hope you have enjoyed reading the thoughts of a thirteen-year-old girl from the country."You can do all things through CHRIST who strengthens you!" Philippians 4:13

Why thank you! I will add you to my friends list as well.

I too enjoy the GHC. I was so glad when I got the latest issue in the mail a few weeks ago. I hadn't even realized Jocelyn wrote something for the Little Womens Gazette! She did a fantastic job.

Thank you for coming by and have a blessed evening! I'll be around. :-D

In Christ,
Mellie

Thank you for the picture I will email you with my adress after I leave you a comment. :) I like flowers too and if I had thought of it I probably would have asked you to draw me one LOL! ;) And about the award, you are welcome. :) I'm glad "you" don't have it! I gave it to a friend and she already had it. Actually, it seems "EVERY" time I give out awards, the people I give the awards out to already have them LOL! And yes, I have a mom LOL. I also have three brothers and a dad LOL! But, no sisters. :( Well I'll go ahead and send that email! ;)

Hello,

Of course I'm not mad at you! How could I be? I just haven't commented you back yet!

I read the previous post, and all of it, too! It sounded like you had a LOT of fun, but I wish I could have been there. :(

Well...I didn't really mind 6 weeks. It passed by pretty quickly. I'm really glad that I can change my earrings now, though. You have your ears pierced? I didn't know that.

Love you!
Kylie

P.S. - I have seen that poem about character before, I like it a lot. It's quite thought-provoking!

Hello,

Ok, I was upset that you thought I was upset...how confusing! And I won't have a heart attack. LOL. I'd love it if you could draw me something, and then you could send it to me in the mail. :)

Yes, maybe next year. I'm praying that we might be able to meet each other soon.

Yes, it does sting quite a bit, doesn't it? Do you still wear earrings?

I like that poem, too! We read it in our devotions.

Love,
Kylie

Hello Rachel!

Well, I would like to say I've been doing good, but my consience prompts me to say otherwise...I have been doing some mischief, but not nearly as much as I have done! Yes, I'd love it if you'd draw me a bird! You know I really haven't thought about which one's my favorite. I'd have to say robins, because they like to flock in our yard. But if that's too hard for you to draw, then you can do something else.

Toox says hi!

Love,
~Chessie~

All right, I told Toox!

Well, I never quite considered them my parents, just my owners. I guess they kinda are my parents, since they "adopted" me! LOL

Yes, I like it when people (and pets) answer me quickly, too!

Love,
~Chessie~

Nope, you're not stalking me. I guess it is kind of like IM, except not quite as "instant". LOL!

Sorry I confused you! :)

Well...hmm...would you be able to draw a purple columbine? It's a flower, and I think they're really pretty.

Ooh, she made you some? I can make earrings, too. I like making jewelry; it's kind of a hobby I have.

Love,
Kylie

P.S. - I saw what you said on Chessie's blog, on leaving a comment on my parents' blog...Mom doesn't get on often, but Dad does, so he'll probably see it.

A few years ago for my brother's birthday, Dad, Felicity, and I went to the store and bought lots of balloons. Then, when we got home, we started blowing up all of the balloons and we put them all over my brother's bedroom floor. My brother was sleeping so when he woke up the next day there was balloons all over his floor, he could hardly walk there was so many balloons. It was funny!
