Chatter from the Cornfields
Jun. 1, 2006 - Do you screen books for your children?

First, let me say that I am amongst the world's worst bloggers.  My last entry was in October.  I have deleted all the old stuff since there wasn't much said anyway.

Tonight I read about a Bible I too would pass on.  Which leads me to ask...does anyone know of a place to find book reviews like screenit.com does for movies?  My 14 yr. old daughter is having such a hard time finding books to read at the library.  Seems everything in the "young adult" section is, in my opinion, not appropriate.  She is a voracious reader and I simply do not have the time to sit and read every book she wants to read.  I have been flipping through the books, skimming the text which isn't very effective.  There is a book, Guitar Girl, that she asked me about before that I rejected after flipping for some strong language. I said maybe in high school.  Since she turned 14, she asked about the book again.  I flipped through it again and found that I had missed some "bedroom scene" text. Now it makes me wonder if I have missed anything in previously skimmed books that I allowed.  I always tell her to let me know if there's anything she wouldn't see/hear in a PG movie that I missed so that we can talk about it, etc. She hasn't brought anything to my attention so far.

So, does anyone know of anyone websites that review books, or have any suggestions on how to screen books?  Thanks!

I know what you mean about the books. I go through the same thing. Here is a site that I have found to be quite helpful. It has reviews, plus ways to scan books and stuff. Here is the link,

Does your daughter have a blog?

I used to pre-read anything unfamiliar when my son was younger. I do think it's even more important as they get older but it's difficult at times. I rely on close friends and family for a nod of "ok" or shake of "don't" sometimes when in a pinch for time and info, to go along with the skimming through. They all know what I wouldn't approve of so I feel safe with that in a general sense.

Here's a link to a site that's been around for a very long time (Surfing the Net With Kids). She has a section with links to a few "safe" places that offer reviews of books for kids. http://www.surfnetkids.com/teen_book_reviews.htm

Great to see you back to blogging and great question! I have the same problem with T. He's very into the SciFi and Dragon books. I can't possibly read them prior to him.
You got a couple responses, I'm going to check those out myself.
Talk to you soon!

I too find this very difficult with avid readers - but also readers with different tastes in genres than myself. I rely heavily on the books "Honey for a Childs Heart" and just recently "Honey for a Teens Heart" both by Gladys Hunt. Though I may have different opinion occassionally the books do give me a good review that I trust to base my decision on. I am using these books like book lists for my kids. Hope this helps you some.
