Cooey the Cow Finds a Friend By Robin Jespersen Grade 2 writing sample *Assignment was to write a “transformation” story There once was a plump Feeling unwanted, Cooey plodded towards the barn. The next morning as the rooster crowed, Cooey heard the pigs crowding, pushing, shoving and snorting all around the trough. Inside the pig pen Farmer Mark watched and held and empty slop pail. Silently, Cooey lifted the metal latch with her snotty nose; her hooves tiptoed behind Farmer Mark. Gently, she tugged at his hair just above his neck with her human-like teeth. He quickly turned around, and his mouth fell open when he saw Cooey the Cow. “I am looking for a friend. Would you be my friend?” requested Cooey. Outside in the farmer’s yard, Cooey gave Farmer Mark the greeniest grass she could find and Farmer Mark’s teeth chewed and grinded the grass. His lips stretched downward, his eyes squinted and greenish slobber drooled onto his suspender-pinned shirt. Then he spat the grass on some leaves. He shouted, “Yuck, Yew, gross! I can’t eat this!” Seeing Cooey’s tears hit the hard ground, Farmer Mark asked, “Why are you crying?” “Because you don’t like my food,” replied Cooey. “How about helping me to slop the pigs?” stated Farmer Mark. Cooey answered, “Yes, that would be great. I have never slopped pigs before.” Towards the barn Farmer Mark carried with each hand a five gallon plastic bucket. With each step, the yucky liquid splashed over the rims. Using his muscular arms, Farmer mark lifted one bucket and poured the contents into the trough. No matter how hard Cooey tried, the handle of the bucket kept slipping away from her teeth until the bucket tipped. The slop flowed down the gutter. Suddenly Cooey had and idea. They could stroll and chase each other in the field. From that day on, they met every day and could be seen walking the grassy field talking and laughing. |

Winter makes me think of fun-filled ski-dooing. Fun-filled ski-dooing makes me think of swerving sleds. Swerving sleds make me think of rows of bare trees. Rows of bare trees make me think of the weaving wind. The weaving wind makes me think of the green toque protecting my ears. The green toque protecting my ears makes me think of toast with melting butter and raspberry jam. Toast with melting butter and raspberry jam makes me think of winter. |

I am a rabbit. I am small, then i am big, now I am gigantic! I am as big as a house! I will shake the whole house and do everything I can to make you come out and play with me. When you come out, I will jump with joy and the earth will shake and the trees will fall down, the lakes will splash and all the fish will come out. I will be happy because the carrots shot out of the gardens and are falling from the sky!!! We will go and sit and eat carrots on the grass. Then you will go back inside. I will go back home and go have a nice drink of carrot soup. Goodnight! |

Dear Auntie Shauna, When I told you what I really wanted for Christmas, I didn’t think you would actually buy it. I was surprised and happy to receive the pink suitcase filled with sugary candy. I must say I enjoyed tasting each type of candy. First, I ate a chunk of the gigantic white chocolate bar with peanuts. Being the nice girl I am, I shared with my friends, adults, cousins, and family. Next, the chocolate kisses melted in my mouth. Then, I chewed two gummy bears followed by one long sweet worm. Finally, I popped one stick of multi-coloured gum in my mouth and blew one medium sized bubble. The fun part was popping the bubble. Don’t worry because I brushed my teeth and I have a tiny bit of candy left. Wiggling his hairy arms, the moose continues to sing, “I Want Candy,” but my pink suitcase is almost empty. My birthday is coming soon – hint, hint. Thank you very much for making my Christmas yummy, sugary and sweet. You are a kind auntie. I hope you had a sugary Christmas just like me! Your favourite niece, |

In the Bunny Field In the winter field, two long ears twitch listening to crunchy footsteps, human-like eyes stare ahead, nostrils pulse on its heart-shaped nose, yellow teeth grind brown pellets, a cotton ball tail sways slightly, my winter boots too close, muscular legs spring forward. -Robin Jespersen |

Dear Dad, I know you have been wanting to sell our ski-doo, but I wish you would re think your decision. Our ski-doo has given us lots of enjoyment. We love riding on the sleds while you turn the ski-doo side to side to try to make us fall off into the powdery snow. Giggling, I clasp my hands around Darren’s waist. If we tumble into the snow, you turn around and smile. Everyone has fun. Remember you told me that a little ski-doo doesn’t work well in warm weather. On a nice day like today we would miss out on lots of outside fun. It is a must to keep the big ski-doo. I hope you change your mind and make five children ad a soon-to-be sled rider happy. Love, Robin |

Dear Grannie, It seemed that you were gone for a long time to Even though your trip was last year, I still remember the day when you gave me your gift. Opening the bag, I was pleased to receive the pink skirt with purple swirls. A bit later I tried on the skirt and was able to tie the long ties all by myself. When I went in your room, you smiled and I felt proud. As well, I learned how to make the skirt into a shirt. Mom has my skirt in a special place for a special day. I wonder if all the girls in Israel wear those skirts. Do they look like ballerinas when they spin around like I do? When I wear the skirt I feel like I’m at your house with you. Thank you for getting me such a pretty present. Your favourite granddaughter, Robin Grace Jespersen |
