And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap if we faint not. Galatians 6:9

Oct. 18, 2007 - Has anyone seen a Ticonderoga?

Posted in Bits and Pieces

a sharp one?  does it have an eraser?

Have you ever heard those questions?  After all these years of homeschooling, we have at least learned that a Ticonderoga is the pencil to have AND it must be sharp AND have a good eraser.

A couple of months ago I bought a big pack of Ticonderogas to give as a birthday present for a homeschooling mom.  She has six children and I know that if my family of two children have issues with pencils than surely hers must too.  So taking an idea from the movie "You've Got Mail" I decided a bouquet of sharpened pencils would be the "perfect" gift.  I enlisted daughter #2 to sharpen as many pencils as would fit in a canning jar.  We then put a little ribbon with a homemade tag around the top of the jar.  It was really sweet looking.  Just a side note, this can do damage to your electric pencil sharpener.  Plan ahead and do a few pencils throughout several days.  Your electric pencil sharpener was not made to do 60 pencils in an hour.   The electric sharpener did finally pull through and get the job done and the gift was a hit.

We ended up having a few boxes of Ticonderogas left over from that purchase, which absolutely delighted my daughters.  They each have their own little private box of sharpened pencils.  I must add, that I personally prefer them to have all their "sharpening" done before I am going over school work with them.

I am actually in the process of cleaning out a few drawers that are not being used for anything other than holding unwanted writing tools.  This makes me think of serving dinner and no one liking it and you say something about all the starving children in the world who would love your food.  Well, anyway, I have a good sized box filled with unwanted pencils of various sizes and conditions.  I think I will try to pretty them up a bit and take them to the Rescue Mission downtown.  I am sure they will find a good home somewhere.... right?

If you are still craving for more pencil stories head over to the Homeschool Front Porch and read more about "The Pencil".

I'm ashamed to admit that even after homeschooling for 8 years I have no idea what makes a Ticonderoga pencil special. I think I've heard of them...but maybe not.

Whatever they are, a boquet of pencils is a wonderful idea for a gift for a homeschooling family! We have four children and I am constantly buying myself pencils because they are never where I left them...the silly things must sprout legs and run for cover...

I love your pencil gift idea! I also enjoyed your post. I don't think I've ever used a Ticonderoga pencil but I think I will now.

Thanks for participating in the Blog Tip Challenge!

Very Well Put!
Ticonderoga Pencils will take over the world someday, and no other pencil will ever be made. They really come in handy during my mathematics time, for I erase a lot of stuff!

I've never heard of a tic--- whatever. At my house we use plain old #2 yellow pencils, or at least my kids do. My own pencil has let me know it is feeling rejected....

I don't think I've ever used a Ticonderoga(?). I know that I've heard of them, and I think my children had a pre-school sized one, but I've not used one myself that I can remember. We've become fans of mechanical pencils for some reason. I suppose because they are virtually mess free and because we can keep the same pencil for a long time unless it gets broken.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading your post. I posted my story tonight, so stop by if you get a chance.
Blessings,
Missy

Ticonderoga is the only brand I will buy. We go through boxes of them around here. I need to invest in a new pencil sharpener, though, mine needs the back up.
