And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap if we faint not. Galatians 6:9

Jul. 10, 2008 - A Place for My Morning Glories

Posted in Bits and Pieces

I have always loved morning glories.  They are such a pretty flower and they remind me of God's precious mercies.  There are new blooms everyday just for that day.  But unlike my morning glories, that fade as the heat of the day bears down on them, the Lord's compassions never fail!

The Lord's lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23

This spring we trimmed back our pear trees and I decided to save the branches to make a trellis out of them.  I had planted morning glories along the west side of our little garage before, but they didn't get enough morning sun to really bloom well, so they needed a new place to grow.  We have a pole just sitting in our back yard beyond our little garden that must have held a martin house at one time so I decided that would be a good place to plant them.  I planted them several weeks ago and have been watching them take root and grow.  This past week my husband and I put the trellis together and put it in place.  I laid out the branches the way that I wanted them and my husband and I took some wire and secured all the intersections and then I took some twine and covered the wires, so it would look a little more homey.

You can see the little vine beginning to climb on the trellis.

Here is a picture from the front of the garden looking towards the trellis.  I am so looking forward to seeing them climb up the trellis and begin blooming.

May. 1, 2008 - Kitchen Essentials

Posted in Bits and Pieces

Maybe I'm feeling a little old fashioned today, but after reading my sister's blog about brooms and my friend's blog about old blue canning jars I just started thinking about what you really need in a kitchen.
Brooms, aprons and canning jars.  Those are the essentials.  They make your kitchen homey and clean.

Apr. 3, 2008 - New site

Posted in Bits and Pieces

I don't know how many times I have found a great homeschool site only to not remember where I found it or what it was called.  Or perhaps, I did bookmark it and my list is so long that I don't know which was which.  I began thinking that maybe I should do something about it, that maybe I should just have a site with all the information at my fingertips.

So, after a few weeks of work and several years of collecting favorite homeschool websites, my daughter, Emily Rose and I have made a new site.  It is called Right Here in Indiana and will contain website links and occasional posts about homeschooling.  While it has Indiana in the name and is somewhat focused on Indiana homeschool laws, it should be useful to homeschoolers anywhere.

We decided to keep it with very low graphics so those with dial-up can access it easily.  Even thought it is still in its early stages, I hope you will find it helpful, I know I already have.

A BIG THANK YOU goes to Emily Rose for making everything come together into a wonderful site.   Hugs to you, girlie!!

Mar. 20, 2008 - First Day of Spring

Posted in Bits and Pieces

The first day of spring has finally arrived!!  The sun is shining and the temperatures are....not really all that warm.  It is still pretty chilly, but we are seeing signs of spring and seeing a lot of birds coming back.
  .
Happycamper has a really fun map on her blog showing the migration of hummingbirds and where they are being sighted right now.  I really like getting a heads up on that.  I have never put out a hummingbird feeder, but this year I am planning on it.

After seeing the map for the hummingbird migration, I decided to look around for an oriole migration map.  I came across this neat website called Journey North.  There are maps, great pictures and information on several different animals that migrate and even a section on when the tulips are going to bloom.

Mar. 11, 2008 - Tightwad Tuesday-Coffee

Posted in Bits and Pieces

My husband loves to drink coffee throughout the day and but he doesn't like to spend very much money on it.  He is constantly on the go with his job so he can't just have a coffee pot at work and sometimes it is hard or inconvenient to carry a thermos so he came up with this little idea of packaging his coffee.

He gave them the name of coffee bombs.  We make them up for him so he can take a few with him to work every morning.  All he has to do is heat up a cup of water and pour the contents into the cup.
We cut the corners off of our bread bags and put in coffee, creamer and sugar then close them up with a twisty tie.  And yes, he brings them back home so that we can refill them.  We do put new twist ties on so that they won't be so prone to break.

Mar. 8, 2008 - New look and new ad

Posted in Bits and Pieces

Thank you Emily Rose for my new template.

It is simply marvelous.

Take a look around, I have added a few new items and one of special  significance  is on the top right column.  ParentalRights.org is an organization that has been set up to help protect parental rights.  With the federal judges and international law becoming more and more of a threat against the families and their fundamental rights we need to be proactive and bring about laws that will protect families from dangerous court decisions and unfriendly international laws.

There is only one solution to this approaching storm: a constitutional amendment that places current Supreme Court doctrine protecting parental rights into the explicit language of the U.S. Constitution.
You can click on the ad to visit their website for more information.

Mar. 4, 2008 - What's been going on around here

Posted in Bits and Pieces

I haven't been blogging much lately and decided today would be the day.  Aren't you glad.

We have a few new additions to our home.  We recently picked up a used treadmill and exercise bike from my aunt.  I have become very sedentary this winter and really needed to get more active and be able to do that from home.  I like to walk so this was the perfect solution.  I had been looking around at new ones and couldn't believe how much they cost.  Yikes!  So my ever wise husband suggested we ask around and see if anyone had a treadmill  that they would like to get rid of.   After asking my mom if she knew of anybody who had one, she told me that my aunt did.  After contacting her we were able to pick up her treadmill as well as an exercise bike that she wanted to sale.

I was wanting to put the treadmill upstairs but it is so heavy we will have to wait till we can get some help getting it up.  In the meantime it is in the front room, sort of in the way, but also very inviting to use.  I have been able to use it almost daily.  I  am also using that time to listen to some cds that we have on various subjects.  So I can exercise my body and feed my mind at the same time.  Now the trick will be to keep doing it!!!

I am so glad that spring is almost here.  This winter I have been dreading taking the girls to piano lessons.  Their piano teacher has this driveway that seems to go on forever.  It is a downward slope all the way to the house, so no problem getting there, it is the getting back that is so treacherous.  We have had trouble 3 times now getting stuck.  Breezy and Emily both wrote about the latest escapade on their blogs.  All I can say is I am glad it is almost spring or there will be no more piano lessons.

Another of our new additions is kefir.  I have been curious about this strange little stuff ever since I first read about it.  It is a good bacteria that you put in milk and it grows and ferments your milk so it is healthier for you, you can compare it to yogurt.  You put these little grains in your milk and let it sit out on the counter, everything in me wanted to say "no, put it in the fridge" but we stuck it out and let it ferment and then we drank it in smoothies.  Nobody got sick.  I kept asking everyone if they felt okay.  So we did it again the next day and the next and so far everyone has been well.  Do we feel any better? We don't know but it should be making our insides healthier.   Emily gives a a really good description of it on her blog.

Feb. 22, 2008 - Winter Shot of our Oak Tree

Posted in Bits and Pieces

We have a big wonderful oak tree in our back yard and I wanted to do a series of pictures of it.  It is definitely a sturdy oak.   We have had some pretty verocious winds here and it just barely moves while the other trees are flopping all over the place and dropping limbs.  In the summer it is a perfect shade tree.  I am going to have Emily take some pictures of it and see what it looks like through the year.

Feb. 1, 2008 - How to back up your blog

Posted in Bits and Pieces

A couple of years ago my mother bought herself and her daughters each an external hard drive so that we could store our pictures on them to protect our pictures from being lost if our computers crashed.  This past week my mother's external hard drive went bad and she lost most of her pictures.  She may still be able to get them retrieved but not without shelling out some big bucks.  This was probably just a bad one out of the bunch, but how do we know which ones those are?

After talking with a friend who is very computer savvy, he suggested having your photos saved to at least two different places.  So with that said, please take the time to get your photos backed up, whether it is having two external hard drives or storing them on your computer and your x-hard drive.

As another precaution you should also back up your blog.  I found this great site for instructions on how to do just that.

Hope this information helps.

Jan. 18, 2008 - It's Friday night....

Posted in Bits and Pieces

.... it must be time for Pizza.

For several years now we have had homemade pizza on Friday night, and it is always pepperoni with half topped with onions. We make a little bowl of garlic butter to dip the crust in and have a glass of ice cold Coca-Cola to round out the fun.  We don't seem to ever tire of this meal, it has become a tradition.

He loves us

He is such an encourager

He thinks my cooking is great and doesn't talk about previous failures

He can fix anything

8 Things I've learned this year

That my daughters are growing faster now than when they were toddlers

I learned a lot about the 1800's and early 1900's

That algebra was introduced to be a school subject by someone that must be really mean

That not everyone has to take Algebra 2

I like to blog

I like to use cast-iron skillets- we all decided it gave us a much more homey feeling

That I expect myself to be much more organized than I ever will be and to get over it

I am not really a gardener.  I always thought that I was but after several years of weed infested gardens I have come to this conclusion

I will let the rest of my family that has been tagged carry on the tags as they wish.

Dec. 2, 2007 - the good, the bad and the ugly.....

Posted in Bits and Pieces

Last night I was thinking I really need to blog about this day lest I forget all about it.  It was a very sweet day but not without its challenges.

The morning flew by as we finished the last minute preparations to get to church on time and have things ready for guests to come following the service.  We were not as prepared as we should have been, so that made for a busier morning than usual. Our patience was being tested with each other and sadly to say we didn't pass the test.  So after some apologies and forgiving we got in the car to head to church, then my youngest daughter reminds us that we are having communion today.  Oops, did I really forgive everyone or not.  So, I dealt with that.

At church we heard God's word preached by a very able and blessed man and then we had some sweet fellowship hanging around after church.  Emily and I headed home before everyone else to get the soup heated up and get some extra chairs out since we invited a "few" more to share the meal with us.

We enjoyed a wonderful time of fellowship during our meal with some dear old and new friends, then we played a fun game of Apples to Apples.  After several hours of fun our guests all went home.  One guest even went home with a new homeschoolblogger blog up and running.

After everything was cleaned up and back in place we all went to our favorite stations.   I rested on the couch, Rob was in the recliner, Emily was at the computer, Breezy was at the piano and our dog, Charlie, was back in the living room on his carpet.  As I was resting, Breezy was playing the most beautiful music I have ever heard her play and I could hear Emily's fingers flying over the keyboard.  I was thinking that those were beautiful sounds.  They were both doing what they loved and doing it very well.  Later, I asked Bre what she was playing and she told me she was just making it up.  How sweet is that?

We then watched One Night With the King, which I have decided is one of my favorite movies, had family worship later and then headed to bed.

Then it happened, while I was getting ready for bed, I choked while I was rinsing my mouth after brushing my teeth.  This was one of those big stupid chokes that you wonder if you are going to make it through.  I was doing something that I have done thousands of times and it was going to kill me.  aaaugggh.  After several minutes, I pulled through.

As I told my husband that I just about died in the bathroom, I had to chuckle thinking about this day.  It started off not so good, had a wonderful middle part and a death defying ending.  Two different scriptures came to mind.

As it is written, "There is none righteous, not even one;  Romans 3:10

There is an appointed time for everything.  And there is a time for every event under heaven- a time to give birth and a time to die;  Ecclesiastes 3:1-2a

It was a good day sandwiched between the bad and the ugly.  By the way, be careful brushing your teeth!!

Oct. 18, 2007 - Has anyone seen a Ticonderoga?

Posted in Bits and Pieces

a sharp one?  does it have an eraser?

Have you ever heard those questions?  After all these years of homeschooling, we have at least learned that a Ticonderoga is the pencil to have AND it must be sharp AND have a good eraser.

A couple of months ago I bought a big pack of Ticonderogas to give as a birthday present for a homeschooling mom.  She has six children and I know that if my family of two children have issues with pencils than surely hers must too.  So taking an idea from the movie "You've Got Mail" I decided a bouquet of sharpened pencils would be the "perfect" gift.  I enlisted daughter #2 to sharpen as many pencils as would fit in a canning jar.  We then put a little ribbon with a homemade tag around the top of the jar.  It was really sweet looking.  Just a side note, this can do damage to your electric pencil sharpener.  Plan ahead and do a few pencils throughout several days.  Your electric pencil sharpener was not made to do 60 pencils in an hour.   The electric sharpener did finally pull through and get the job done and the gift was a hit.

We ended up having a few boxes of Ticonderogas left over from that purchase, which absolutely delighted my daughters.  They each have their own little private box of sharpened pencils.  I must add, that I personally prefer them to have all their "sharpening" done before I am going over school work with them.

I am actually in the process of cleaning out a few drawers that are not being used for anything other than holding unwanted writing tools.  This makes me think of serving dinner and no one liking it and you say something about all the starving children in the world who would love your food.  Well, anyway, I have a good sized box filled with unwanted pencils of various sizes and conditions.  I think I will try to pretty them up a bit and take them to the Rescue Mission downtown.  I am sure they will find a good home somewhere.... right?

If you are still craving for more pencil stories head over to the Homeschool Front Porch and read more about "The Pencil".

Aug. 1, 2007 - Fox visits

Posted in Bits and Pieces

Last night we had a strange thing happen.  My husband and I were sitting in our dining room just talking about the day's events when something on our front porch caught my eye.  I was facing our window that looks out over our front porch and I noticed something walking on the ledge of our porch.  At first I could just see its leg so I thought it must be a cat, but as it walked more into view I saw that it was a fox.  A fox on our porch!  I couldn't believe it.  The fox stood on the porch and surveyed the surroundings.  After a few seconds it jumped into the yard.  My husband and I ran out the back door to see where it went and it was about thirty feet away just walking around in our yard.  It looked right at me while I snapped a picture of it and the flash from the camera made it run away.   Since it was dusk the picture turned out dark and all you can see are the foxes eyes shining at me.

We have fields around us, but are really close to town so we normally don't see too much wildlife like that.  The girls were visiting some friends last night so they missed it, which is sort of funny, because they say that when they are gone interesting things always happen.  Well, it did.

Jul. 14, 2007 - Family Reunions

Posted in Bits and Pieces

Well, the season for reunions has opened for us.  Just about every year we have 3 family reunions all within 4-6 weeks.  They are all so different from each other, reflecting the difference in the families represented.  Are they fun?  Yes.  Are some more fun than others?  Yes.

Sometimes we play games other times we just eat and visit.  Today was a reunion with lots of games and somehow I ended up winning more than my fair share.  One special moment was when my toe-headed 7 year-old cousin went to the little store at the campground and bought me one gummy worm and ran all the way back to me and presented it to me with much pomp and ceremony.  We aren't quite sure why he did that but it was sweet and funny.  Another amusing thing to watch today was three little boys with leftover waterballoons.  The absolute joy they had trying to throw them at people and ending up being soaked themselves was too fun.

The Lord blessed us with wonderful weather, sweet fellowship, safe travel, and fun memories of family.   Okay, one 1 down and 2 to go.

Jul. 6, 2007 - My Own lil' Miss Potter

Posted in Bits and Pieces

After several months of waiting, our family was finally able to watch the movie Miss Potter.  (It had a very limited showing in the US, for some reason.)

It was  "delicious".  As we watched the first few minutes of the movie we knew we were in for a treat.   Perhaps I am a little biased  though, for, you see, we have our own lil" Miss Potter living amongst us.  My oldest daughter has been drawing and painting ever since she was old enough to hold a pencil.  So it was a real treat to see Miss Potter's life portrayed and see such similarities in our own daughter's life.  I've always known that Breezy enjoyed her drawings but after watching Miss Potter, I can understand it a little more.

If you are looking for a movie to watch with your family, I highly recommend it.
