Feb. 23, 2008 - Pride & Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice. Elizabeth – Mr. Darcy, Mr. Darcy – “ Elizabeth Bennet had been obliged, by the scarcity of gentlemen, to sit down for two dances; and during part of that time, Mr. Darcy had been standing near enough for her to overhear a conversation between him and Mr. Bingley, who came from the dance for a few minutes, to press his friend to join it. ‘ Come, Darcy,’ said he, ‘ I must have you dance. I hate to see you standing about by yourself in this stupid manner. You had much better dance.’ ‘ I certainly shall not. You know how I detest it, unless I am particularly acquainted with my partner. At such an assembly as this, it would be insupportable. Your sisters are engaged, and there is not another woman in the room, whom it would not be a punishment to me to stand up with.’ ‘ I would not be so fastidious as you are,’ cried Bingley, ‘for a kingdom! Upon my honour, I never met with so many pleasant girls in my life, as I have this evening; and there are several of them you see uncommonly pretty.’ ‘You are dancing with the only handsome girl in the room,’ said Mr. Darcy, looking at the eldest Miss Bennet. ‘Oh! She is the beautiful creature I ever beheld! But there is one of her sisters sitting down just behind you, who is very pretty, and I dare say, very agreeable. Do let me ask my partner to introduce you.’ ‘ Which do you mean?’ and turning round, he looked for a moment at Well now you have to agree with me. Mr. Darcy is exceedingly proud. “ She is not handsome enough to tempt me” Tempt! What? It sounds like he’s talking about candy. Mr. Darcy: You have the only tasteful candy in this shop. Mr. Bingley: It is the most delicious candy I have ever tasted! But that one in the box over there is quite delightful also. Do let me give you a piece. Mr. Darcy: Which do you mean? It is tolerable; but not good enough to tempt me. I mean geez! Obstacles in a shop. No wonder Definition Pride - too high opinion of oneself Prejudice - hatred or intolerance of social stature Mmmmmmmmm . . . . . . . . I decide to think that prejudice means the hate of the opposite sex. “ and I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to marry. “ Ohhh! That was very harsh. I’m surprised it didn’t bring Darcy on his knees and in tears. I mean it’s no wonder he sent her that letter to make up for his not behaving in a more gentleman-like manner. But, one thing I have to comment on is his name. Fitzwilliam Darcy I must say I would be embarrassed if my mother called me Fitzwilliam. That probably brought his whole to nothing by just signing his name. This whole review ,I guess you would call it, is not at all what I wanted to say about this book. So I guess I’ll make it short. This is one of my most favorite books. I highly recommend it. The only problem is that most people have a difficulty understanding it. I watched the movie first then read it. It is much easier. I think Jane Austen is a genius. All of her books are glorious. I also recommend Emma. A laugh! Fitzwilliam Darcy Right! Rosita
