A Beautiful Actress and The King of Pop died today

Today was sad day for American and around the world.
Earlier today I received news that Farrah Fawcett lost her battle from cancer. She was 62.

Then, this afternoon while watching the evening news, it was reported that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson died today. He was 50.

These two icons will be forever missed!

Thinking cold thoughts! It's a little warm in Texas

And the sad thing, it's gonna get hotter!! August and September are typically the hottest months of the year.
I remember Texas being hot, but not this hot.!! It's so hot that my feet burn through my shoes!!!
So, during these hot days, I'm going to think cold thoughts.....ice cream, snow, ice, snow skiing, cold showers, etc.

Double blessed on May 24, only 4 years apart.

May 24, a day my life changed forever! A day just 14 years ago, I became a mommy for the first time. At that time, I didn’t think life could get any better.

Then, exactly 4 years later, I was blessed with my second child, my daughter

I can’t believe my oldest is 14 and my sweet Aundrea is 10. One day you are bringing them home from the hospital, then you blink and they are 14 and 10!! Where did the time go?? All I can say is time flies when you are having fun!! And, I’ve had a blast watching my children blossom into a mature 14 year old and a beautiful sweet 10 year old.

Yesterday we celebrated their birthday by having a birthday party for them. As usual, and part of our tradition, I made their cakes.

Garrett requested red velvet with cream cheese frosting.

Aundrea wanted a chocolate cake
with chocolate icing.

I baked the cake and the kids decorated their cake.

Aundrea’s theme was Hannah Montana and Garrett’s theme was 3D Star Wars.

We had a wonderful time celebrating with family and friends.

Speaking of friends, my best friend from high school drove in from Houston to attend the party. It was so nice to see her and her family again. This makes the second time we have seen each other in the past 17 years. They will be moving to Kansas soon so we don’t know when we will see each other again. Thank goodness for email this has kept us in contact with each other all these years!!??

So I say Happy Birthday to 2 of my favorite people in the world. You have no idea how much I love you and how proud I am of each of you!!! Garrett, I can’t believe you are 14 now!! And my sweet Aundrea, you are 10! (You go girl)

Down to the final two...

Well, after months of faithfully watching American Idol each week, we are down to the grand finale. Tonight a new American Idol winner will be announced. I, like most Americans who watch the show, are on the edge of my seat, nervous to see the final results. Though I would love to see Adam take the crown, I’m afraid Kris will take it. But, regardless who wins, both are guaranteed a record deal.
Throughout the show, Aundrea and I have had two personal favorites….Allison and Adam. It’s too bad Allison was voted off during her best week…rock week. I’m so glad I learned how to use my DVR a few months ago!! The duet between Adam and Allison a few weeks ago was “rocken” (as my kids would say). Personally, Kris is too predictable you were guaranteed a slow song from him…even tho he can sign well, I like a variety….Adam, being the entertainer that he is, and his performance usually leaves us speechless. I love that he is unpredictable! Adam had a way of spicing up the show. He can take any song and make it his own. Amazing. So, good luck to both Adam and Kris and may the best entertainer win!
Adam is on the left and Kris is on the right.

Praise offering!! House is rented out!!

On Tuesday, our rental house was placed in the online edition of the Austin American Statesman. Well, Tuesday we didn’t receive any inquires. I was feeling a little down, thinking nobody would inquire about the house. (We raised the rent 80.00 from the last time it was on the rental market). By Wednesday morning, we started receiving inquires and making appointments to view the house. On Thursday I had 2 scheduled showings. I was supposed to have a showing on Friday, but she wanted me to send pictures of the backyard. So, I did. She decided the back yard was too big for her to maintain. After 15 inquires (praise GOD), we decided to go with an older couple. We met with them this past weekend; they signed the lease and will begin moving into the house immediately.

I feel extremely blessed for our house to rent out so quickly and at the price we wanted. We raised the rent to stay competitive with other rental houses in the area. At first, I thought 980.00 would be too steep. Well, after looking at other rentals in the area going for well over 1,000 monthly, ours is a bargain. Plus, it’s at the prime location…close to everything and with a large shaded yard.

So, I just want to say Praise God!!! Thank you!!

Going up instead of down.....

Here is my starting weight for this week. So, I've gone up a few pounds from my weigh- in last week. Well, after all, what do I expect, I've only worked out one day last week, ate 2 donuts on Saturday and a slice of strawberry cheesecake on Sunday. Ok, I need to work out double time this week…especially since we are celebrating not one but two birthdays in our family this weekend.

Prayer request for a 5 month old baby.

I don't normally send prayer requests on my blogger but this is for a dear friend of mine I met while we were stationed in Italy. They are currently stationed in Naples and a strong Christian family who desperately needs prayer-and lots of it!! Marcello is their 7th child and was born December 2008. I know they would appreciate any prayer!! Thank you!!
Please keep the Montanez family in your thoughts and prayers. Carlos and Letika's baby, Marcello, has been having heart related problems over the last few months. They have seen a specialist in Naples which admitted him into a local hospital. They have learned that his heart must work harder than other babies his age and there is concern he is not gaining weight. This afternoon, he was to have a catheter put through his leg to send a scope up into his heart. There is concern that his lungs are getting too much blood. Letika will spend the night in the hospital. Different friends are taking care of the other children.

Updated information will be sent as it comes in.

Ok, everyone calm down!!

Yesterday I posted how I would like to lose a few pounds. Well, I had several friends and family members expressed their concern. See, 16 years ago when I met Mark, I was anorexic...down to 105. At that time in my life I was experiencing a multiplied of problems and severe depression. And, the only way I knew how to “solve” my problems was to avoid eating and thus I lost a lot of weight. So, like I said earlier, when I met Mark, I was down to 105. If it wasn’t for Mark, I probably wouldn’t’ be writing my testimony now. Mark was my saving grace. We met in May and by the following March, I had gained 10 pounds.
Now, fast forward to now…... My family and friends are concerned because they think I will revert back to my anorexic days. I can assure them I am not. I enjoy eating which explains why I have gained weight. I am simply starting a workout routine to tone up the body and to lose a few pounds. I just want to be a size 10 again. My eating habits remain the same-still love all types of food and my sweet tooth is still there. I am not dieting but simply increasing my activity flow to obtain a healthy life style. You know, take care of me! I preach to my children to stay active. I don’t want to be a hyprocriate to my children.
So, I appreciate everyone’s concern but I can assure I am not starving myself to lose weight. I am only working out. Besides aren't we supposed to work out to keep the body healthy and the heart strong?

whooo! Lost a few pounds!!

A few weeks ago, I turned 37 and it was at that point when I realized I needed to change my habits. I was not happy with my current weight. In fact, before I started my workout program last week, I weighed in at 170, just shy of what I weighed 4 days before giving birth to my last child.....I weighed 172.... You can see why it bothered me so much. Well, after I had Leo I was lucky enough to lose all my pregancy weight (40 pounds) but over the years, I managed, somehow, to gain most of it back . Of course, you would think chasing after 3 kids would keep the weight off, but the weight somehow snuck up on me. So, here I am celebrating my 37 birthday with my parents. I know, I dont' look that big but the table is hiding the fat....scroll down to the Easter photo of Mark and I and you can clearly see just how "big" I have gotton! I am brave for putting that photo on here.

Monday, May 4, I weighed in at 170 and started my brutal workout program with Billy Blanks. The first day, I could only handle 8 minutes. On Tuesday, I worked up to 24 minutes....Wednesday 45 minutes and Thursday I was up to 60 minutes!! Whohooo!!
I love Taebo. In fact, Taebo is what helped me lose the baby fat after having Leo. I'll try to give a weekly update. My goal is to be around 140-145. So as you can see I don't want to lose a lot of weight. I just don't want to weigh what I weighed at 9 months pregnant.....it's a mind over matter thing....LOL!
Here is my weight as of today-167.6-not much of a lost, but it's a start!! I didnt' work out today as originally planned because we did a lot of yard work on our rental house over the weekend and I am sore. I will work out tomorrow!! I have to!!!

Back on the rental market.....

Well, our rental house in Austin is, once again, back on the rental market....long story. So this past weekend, and Mother's Day, was spent getting the house ready to put back on the rental market. Thankfully we didn't have THAT much work to do-mostly the yard and touch up paint inside. So, here is our rental house. I love the way the trees surround which provides lots of shade for the back yard! If only I could have this yard with my San Antonio home, I'd be happy!!

6 months ago today-

Wow, has it been 6 months we left Italy and arrived back to the states!! While I was living in Italy, I thought the day I would finally arrive back in the states would never come and now, I find myself yearning to go back to Italy. I know, call me crazy! But I do miss Italy. The food, the traveling, walking the ancient Roman streets, seeing the historical Greek and Roman buildings but most of all, being submerged in the Italian culture!! Life in Italy was simple, yet complex at the same time.

Ask anyone who knows me: I am a certified java junkie. I'm naturally energetic to begin with, but I rely on my caffeine companion to power me through long days, tough workouts and piles of work. I can even have three cups a day—including a dose after dinner—and still sleep soundly all night. Lucky for me—and the 87 percent of Americans who consume caffeine daily, with the average java drinker gulping down 8 ounces a day—more research is proving that coffee is actually healthy for you. So go on, have that latte without guilt. As if you needed more inspiration, here are some brew benefits to prove that sipping is smart:

It helps you shed pounds
People who drank more metabolism-firing caffeine gained less weight over 12 years than those who cut back on the coffee, say researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

It powers your workouts
Downing coffee and toast between back-to-back workouts can keep you humming, a study from the Journal of Applied Physiology reports. Athletes who drank a caffeinated carbohydrate beverage after cycling had 66 percent more glycogen (an energy reserve) in their muscles than those who had a caffeine-free version. Replenishing glycogen helps you go farther and faster in your next session. Do you run on caffeine?

It helps you wake up refreshed
Drinking a cup of coffee immediately before taking a 15- to 30-minute catnap can leave you alert and rested after waking up, according to research from The Sleep Research Centre, Loughborough University in Leicestershire, England. Caffeine takes a half hour to kick in, so it will rouse you after a short snooze. Try these tips to sleep your way gorgeous.

It can ward off illness
Increasing your coffee intake may prevent liver cancer, The National Institute of Environmental Medicine in Stockholm, Sweden, finds. Two cups of java daily lowered a person's risk by 43 percent on average. In another study from University of Minnesota at Minneapolis, women who drank coffee had a 24 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease and other inflammatory conditions. Antioxidants in coffee are likely behind the protective benefits.

It can ease muscle cramps
Women who had the caffeine equivalent of two cups of coffee the day after their quadriceps were stimulated (as if they'd done squats) felt 48 percent less leg pain within an hour, research from the University of Georgia in Athens reveals. Caffeine may block the body's receptors for the ouch-causing chemical adenosine, scientists speculate.

It makes cardio feel like a cinch
Women given the caffeine equivalent of about two cups of coffee an hour before cycling reported 40 percent less pain than those who went decaf, according to a study from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Caffeine seems to block neurotransmitters that signal discomfort during exercise, researchers say.

It helps you get want you want
Dealing with a difficult person? Broach a tough topic over a cup of joe. Caffeine may make people more open to persuasion, the European Journal of Social Psychology notes. Researchers say it hones cognitive function, causing skeptics to be more receptive to a convincing case.

It may fight breast cancer
Young women drinking four or more cups of caffeinated coffee daily reduced their breast cancer risk by 40 percent compared with nondrinkers, a study in the Journal of Nutrition finds. The caffeine and polyphenols in regular coffee protect against cancer. Worried about getting the jitters? Even two cups every day can help. And try these risk-reducing recipes as well.

It improves recall!
Caffeine perks up short-term memory, a study from the Medical University of Innsbruck in Austria reveals. One cup of coffee may be all it takes; drink it before a big meeting to be your sharpest.

Want a delicious, lowfat treat that packs coffee's powerful punch? Bake up a batch of warm chocolate cakes with coffee creme anglaise.

Swine flu in Texas- "our public school district"

If I didn't homeschool, Schertz/Cibolo ISD is where my children would be attending school.

As the number of suspected or confirmed local cases of swine flu climbed to 12, the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District said Sunday it will close all its schools for at least one week.
The district also canceled today’s planned public meeting at Steele High School in Cibolo, where the two Texas cases of swine flu were confirmed last week.
Another 10 suspected cases are being tested — all from the school district or household contacts of the infected students, and ranging from a 6-year-old to people in their 40s, Dr. Sandra Guerra, regional medical director for the Texas Department of State Health Services, said Sunday.
And there may be more out there.
Linda Moses of Cibolo said she's been sick with vomiting, diahrrea and a cough, and both of her sons have shown flu symptoms as well. One attends Clemens High School.
“I allowed him to go over and spend time with his grandparents, which I'm a little worried about now, because that's the last thing they need,” Moses said.
She hasn't been to a doctor yet, but said with the news of the district-wide closure, she's planning to see one as soon as possible.
“It was scary anyway, but it's really kind of hitting kind of close to home now,” Moses said.
Schertz has also closed its public library, Guerra said. Cibolo has closed its parks and is asking churches and places where people gather to postpone activities. It is asking private developments to close their parks as well.
Employees of Bexar County who live in Guadalupe County are being asked to be extra vigilant, and if they or any family members have flu symptoms, to stay home, said Bexar County spokeswoman Laura Jesse.
“Since the school district has made the decision to shut down for the next week, we advise our employees to use their better judgment, definitely, if they are feeling ill, not to come to work,” Jesse said.
That goes for the general population, too, said Emily Palmer, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of State Health Services.
“Our recommendations are that people who are sick stay home,” Palmer said. “I don't want to minimize this. We are concerned and we are actively doing surveillance.”
The state also wants doctors to change their normal approach to possible influenza patients, Guerra said.
Instead of running their own tests or using private labs, doctors should contact the state or Metropolitan Health District officials and use those labs to test throat cultures, she said.
She fully expects Bexar County swine flu cases.
“I think we're prepared for that,” she said. “We understand people are people, and we tend to be mobile.”
Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, noted in a press briefing Sunday that only one of the 20 confirmed U.S. cases had been hospitalized.
In Mexico, hundreds have been sickened with the same strain of swine flu that is affecting people in the U.S., and numerous people have died, with 12 of the deaths confirmed as the same strain. Canada has confirmed several cases, while New Zealand and Spain are investigating possible infections.
Why that strain at this point appears to be more lethal in Mexico is still a mystery, Schuchat said.
It's also too soon to say why it appears to be affecting young, healthy people as opposed to the very old and very young, who are generally the most vulnerable, she said.
But those numbers may change as more cases are diagnosed, which health officials expect.
Rebecca Villarreal, spokeswoman for the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City district, said the situation is changing every day.
The school district has set up an information hotline at 210-619-4700 for parents and school employees to call for updates, Villarreal said.
“We recorded the message for the week, and if there's a change we'll update it,” she said, adding that the district is working on adding a Spanish version of the message. “We know we're going to have questions, especially come Friday, (when) the big question will be, ‘Is there going to be school on Monday?'”
The tone of that question may depend on whether it's being asked by parents or students.
“The kids are doing a happy dance,” said Ken Singel, who has a middle-school and high-school student in the district. “My wife's telling me that she's not going to let 'em out, but ... the little one is already agitating for Schlitterbahn.”
Singel's wife is a nursing professor, he said, so they're taking precautions, but are not overly concerned.
