Tis the Season

I just wanted to wish everyone a Merry CHRISTmas season!

This year we are busy with Advent and the Symbols of CHRISTmas, then move into the 12 Days of Christmas and Epiphany. I'll post pictures of how they are displaying what they are learning through our Bible readings, discussions, activities and crafts sometime soon.

The kids are also busy making homemade gifts for those they wish to bless during this season.

Other things that are going on right now.....

I think next week we'll be teaching and reteaching some friends how to crochet. All the kids can crochet very well, except Braeden, he's 4. He has however, been begging to learn recently LOL. Guess Ben will have to teach him how to finger crochet over the winter.

We are in an early winter wonderland this year. We already have a TON of snow (began last week) and a ton more to come this weekend too. We can see the deer very well at the feeder behind the fence now that we are snow covered. We were blessed with 3 deer and a fawn visiting for an hour this week. Normally we only see 2 come at a time. Of course have several video clips and pictures!

This weekend I look forward to finishing "defurring" the house from dog-sitting from Nov. 17-27. We watched our 2 poms' mom, dad and step-mom ;op while our friends went to CA with their daughter and the 2 younger poms (half sister and full brother to our 2 poms). I finished defurring the family room and downstairs last weekend and the main part of the kitchen earlier this week. The kids did their rooms. I have the living room left to do and shampoo the carpet in there and in the family room. YIPPY! Can't wait til it's completely gone LOL.

I had planned on having it all done right away, but, who has that kind of energy during their monthly? NOT me. Nemo - the daddy - shed like crazy! I mean, I KNEW it was all over, and we were cleaning more than we normally do during our daily chores, but WOWZA (I am quite anal about a clean house, lol, but more relaxed then I used to be). Not sweating it, I'll just finish up this weekend.

Well, I had better run, I told the kids they can go outside this afternoon and play in all this snow, now they are going crazy over it and running to get lunch chores done ROFLOL.

While they are out, I will give love to all our plants, and get my weekly deep cleaning done in the kitchen since I was too tired to do it all earlier this week on the normal day (there are the normal daily chores but each part of the house has its own deep cleaning day). AND the sun is shining!!! That will make it even better, oh I love when the sun shines and fills the house!!! It has been hiding for some time now.

I think I'll put on some CHRISTmas tunes while I work.

Have a wonderful weekend!!!

Learning and Education

Teach a child how to learn and instill a love of learning, after a love for our Lord!

If you give this to your children, their goals and dreams are at their fingertips. Now give them the time to do it.

Sit back and enjoy the fruits as you are proactively available.

You will now see what education really is...in case you ever doubted yourself, your child, or others.

What education is to you may not be what it is to your neighbor, and that's ok.

Keep your eyes on the LORD. Seek God's will above your own.

Fall

Don't you just LOVE this time of year?! I do...and boy did fall weather come in with a bang! No warning or easing us into it this year at all. The mornings and evenings are cool with the middle of the day being just gorgeous and delightful.

I love this time of year for so many reasons. Colors, smells, physical changes, watching the animals scurry to harvest their winter supply, that cozy feeling it gives you (atleast it does for me) to get everything prepared so you can settle in for the winter days, curling up infront of the fire with the kids and books, adding the changes to our Nature Journals, etc. These are just the opposite of my other favorite season ~ Spring!

What's your favorite thing about Fall?

IDEAS - Kinds of boards

Well, here I go again. The Lord provided some wonderful ideas today while chatting with a dear friend. I shared them with her after she brought up the subjects of:
Bulletin Boards (corkboard)
Chalkboard (shaped)
The chalkboards she is finding are not the size she wants (nor the price).
I told her to go to her home supply store and buy a sheet of plywood. Pick up some posterboard and make some templates in the shape(s) they want their boards to be (and size). Then, cut and trace those templates on the plywood. Cut out. While at the store, she also picked up a can on the Chalkboard Paint they now have. After the templates are cut out, they can paint the board and tada, a personalized chalkboard!
For bulletin boards, she said they are just too expensive. I agree. The idea of what could be used came next, I was really excited about this one because my kids have wanted these also.
Again, while at the home supply store, visit the insulation isle. Purchase the thickness that you want (I'd do the pink sheets, but any will do). Have them cut to the size you want/need them to be. Then, make slip covers (like a pillow case) out of fabric and velcro the end. You can even change the fabric to seasonal and/or holiday slip covers! Now that's a really personalized FUN bulletin board.
White erase boards? All we did is went to our home supply store, in the panel section. The bathroom board is the same stuff. We picked up a sheet for under $8 had it cut to size right there in the store and hung on the wall. You could even draw out templates on this so the kids can have personalized shape dry erase lap boards if you want, it's SO much less expensive! And look just how many you can make for such a great price.
If you want it looking professional, buy trim and frame it.
Clear as mud!?
What are some of your fun ideas for useful things?

Life is Education - Education is Life

I don't want to rush through topics just to say we've covered them. The kids will forget most, if not all, of the facts they learned about it in a week anyway, right? You are rushing so quickly it blends together in their heads. What IS the point of that!?

No, I'd rather take our time on things that are of importance to our child(ren). Choosing an interest of theirs and allow them to sit back and absorb all they want and need to about a topic they want to learn more about until they get their fill of it.

Then give them time to process what they have learned so they can turn it into a product of their choice, even if that product is simply telling me about it (no, not me questioning them, me listening TO them). I do not constantly require our children to produce a product just to show they have learned something. Why would I? No one makes ME do that to prove to them I know it, they'd rather me tell them all about it, right?

There is a time and place for written and illustrated product, and a time and place for simply listening to the joys of your children's hearts on topics they have learned about, and, a time for further questioning type discussions.

Why is it that as adults, our passions and things we choose to learn about are considered hobbies, but a child's must be considered and/or classified as school?

I ask you to ask yourself, what does SCHOOL mean to you? To me, one must first think about what EDUCATION is. It isn't school.

Education is learning all you can about things you are interested in, things that make you curious, even if that means just browsing the basics of it. Education is learning about something to further yourself, professionally and/or personally. Education grows and stretches you. It is NOT sitting down doing seatwork at a table for hours on end.

Everything in LIFE is EDUCATION. Education is life. Everything can be placed into an appropriate subject category. It's like saying 'so and so can't see past the end of his/her nose.' When we box up education, we suck the life out of it. You begin to see the glazed looks in the eyes of your family.

We need to open our eyes, ears and minds to what education is, and how the Lord made us to learn and utilize our world and our resources to learn and gain from it.

Checking in

I thought I would stop in and say HELLO! Since, I now know my password on here again LOL. Yep, that always helps a person.

Yesterday was beautiful and sunny, I transplanted a bunch of snapdragon roots while the kids enjoyed playing outside...er uh, the boys enjoyed rope climbing the trees while people on the bike trail stopped to watch apparently cause they could see them hanging in the backyard HAHAHAHA!

I'll post a real blog soon.....after I figure out why this blasted thing refuses to upload my 'new' picture but took off the old one and gave it their own lol.

Have a great day!

(See this blog and my dear friends blog for an explanation THIS blog click on "Lord Directed Homeschooling" on the right side bar and http://homeschoolblogger.com/outoftheboxmom click on "Lord Directed Homeschooling" on the right side bar).

1 John 2:27 "...the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him."

In September, we will be starting our Biblical History study. We are using MOH Volume 1 (Mystery of History http://brightideaspress.com/catalog.htm scroll down) and HOW Adam to Messiah Unit (Heart of Wisdom www.heartofwisdom.com ). I believe each of these resource study guides stand firm alone, and it was my intention to use them that way. It however, is not the Lord's will for us. PTL I listened ;o)

Isaiah 55:8-9 “ For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

The Lord wants me to share with you a visual into his way for our family to study Biblical History and to perhaps show you how you can SIMPLIFY and put together things in his way, for your family too.

During the time the Lord gave me to prepare the following things, He also put a burden on my heart for those of you reading this; so it may help him direct you to put things together in the way He wants for your family to study his world.

The Lord says to KEEP IT SIMPLE! If things you are doing are frustrating, overwhelming, complicated, confused, hard, easily angered, etc., they are not from him.

'Matthew 11:30 For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light.'

Galatians 5:1 "Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage."

Galatians 5:1 "It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery." NAS

His ways are not hard, his burden is not heavy. Pray, ask, and listen. It is so important to just be quiet, still and wait patiently. Do not grasp at straws and get wishy washy while waiting for his answer. If you still aren't sure what you are hearing is from the Lord, simply ask him to continue to bring it to you if it is his will, and if it is not to take it away.

John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you."

John 16:13 "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come."

Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

The following is an explanation for the notebook and planner pages we will be using during our study that I created. To see them during or after please go to http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/a_bzn_mom/album?.dir=a129

You are looking at what and how the Lord told me to make and set up for our Biblical History study. I have listened and put into play some things he has revealed to me over the last year. I am so thankful for this. Certain things are not as easy to do as they once were for me, for various reasons, along with having a very active 3yo ankle biter and many other tragic things surrounding what has occured this year with my sister and her two daughters (please pray for them).

God is SO good! He told me to get it all ready and printed off so it's just a notebook reach away and we can spend the time studying and learning together under his guidance and wisdom.

Notebooks
I have arranged the pages on the photo site so they are in the same order as my Master Notebook. He told me to color code the kids this year, so they have chosen their color and I have the "cheap" folders for each of them paper punched and inserted into the Master Notebook with their pages printed and ready to be handed to them for each lesson.

I was to make as many electronic (computer) notebook pages as possible for the *key* activities and/or requirements of both MOH and HOW. The children can then fill in and personalize each of those pages creating their own combination of electronic, traditional and lapbook style notebook pages - whichever they feel lead to along with additional pages to create when they are inspired to (I have a blank page with the timeline header for each lesson for this purpose).

Notebook Pages on Photo Site
There is a duplicate page - Corresponding Chart - because it is also the first page of our notebooks (as reference). The kids' folders only have the Corresponding Chart to pg. 82 in them. The other pages are in my other notebooks (Master and Planner). The planner pages are not complete yet. They have the basics down right now. Before we reach each lesson and/or during, I will be adding specific Geography and Vocabulary we need to cover on our notebook pages. I will also add any hands-on projects we'd like to do as well. There is a list of the resource books that I purchased and already owned. The italic means I also have scanned certain pages so we can use the text and/or graphics for making notebook pages (as you can see on certain pages). We will be using these for our study of MOH Vol. 1 Lessons 1-13 and HOW Adam to Abraham. You can see what I have planned out and made thus far. These are also the only notebook pages I have made with the basic requirements and/or activities we are chosing to do for each lesson. I will be making the others with basic instructions during off weeks.

Routine for Study
I am to have as much as possible ready before we start after Labor Day. We are to study for 4 weeks and then take 1 week off so I can prep, create, gather materials, etc. for the next 4 week studies. AND most importantly, we are to study it SLOWLY and as indepth as their ages and comprehension levels will allow them to. The Lord has put this wonderful burden in my heart since 2003 to study HIStory in depth and chronologically.

He lead me to use TOG Yr. 1 Unit 1 (Tapestry of Grace www.tapestryofgrace.com ) in 2003 which taught me HOW to teach history, love it and not be afraid of it (weren't we all!?) before purchasing MOH Vol. 1 (even though I found it first). *I* wanted to use it then and the last few years but it never happened. His timing is SO perfect! He has now lined up all of my ducks - things that confused or frustrated me then are clear, easy, light and peaceful now - and His will for our journey to begin as we study Biblical History in the way he wants for our family is ready. o/

Basic OverviewTimeline
He told me how we are to do the timeline as well. We are still to do a master timeline notebook (using the book someone made for others for free). We are to glue all the timeline figures in accordingly and color them when we study them and add other text or graphics if we so choose. This is so they can 'at a glance' see where something or someone fell into history without flipping through a ton of notebook pages.

Detailed Timeline
We are to put a timeline header at the top of EACH notebook page created. This is so there is not any stress or overwhelming feelings about *HOW* to create the 'perfect' timeline for each child. We are to also have the timeline figures on the appropriate notebook pages. Their notebooks will be their Biblical History study as well as their detailed timeline. Why do more work than necessary? He said just add the line and text at the top of each page. Timeline figures we are using can be found at History through the Ages http://www.homeschoolinthewoods.com/HTTA/timeline.htm

Memory Cards
We will NOT be making Memory Cards (these are to be done at the end of each week - every 3rd lesson). The 'time LINE' and 'text' will be the color Linda recommends in MOH again, why triple the work now? Line/Text for Quarter 1-2 lessons 1-18 are to be dark GREEN to represent "Creation and Early Civilizations" (Creation to 627BC) Quarter lessons 19-36 will be RED to represent "The Classical World" (see page xxvii MOH V1 for details). We may make a summary page after each 3 lessons - scroll down to p.82 for example (w/ Creation, Adam & Eve, Jubal/Tubal-Cain all on 1 page - 'original' is in the title) if we so choose here and there, perhaps we'll just do an oral presentation recap.

Timeline figures that are in the lineage of Christ will have a gold 'cross symbol' or perhaps the 'star of David' as it was his family crest (on his shield for battle). I think at the top right hand corner of the page. Timeline header text matches the HTTA figures. We'll also be discussing timeline dates for Creation and how you can date it by adding/subtracting the ages/dates mentioned in the Bible.

Maps and Geography
We are to present Geography & Maps the same as we did with TOG - using regular and/or overlay maps when needed/necessary. You can see I have one page that says Geography-Maps already. Some lessons have this activity, some do not. The reason being we don't know at this time, which map they will each choose, so I did not make those pages. They can easily be made from the blank page with timeline header on it.

Setting up our notebook
Our notebook is NOT to be set up the way MOH recommends. We are NOT to file papers by continent or country. We are to have a *Map and Location Key * and file it in the front of our notebook after the corresponding chart for MOH & HOW study. What it will have on it is colored square boxes of different colors. Each box will represent a continent or country. Ex: red box = Asia. On the right hand bottom corner of each notebook page, for Asia, the kids draw a red box and label it accordingly. Ex: "red box =" Asia: Iraq (Mesopotamia) (from MOH Lesson 2, Activity 2) By doing it in this order, it stays chronological at the same time as seeing geographically where it took place. They will not have to flip back and forth between sections to see what, when and where.

'Matthew 11:30 For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light.'

These first lessons (1-13 for MOH and Adam to Abraham unit for HOW) will probably be covered over this and next year. I don't know. We are going to study slowly and follow the Lords footsteps. It could take us 2 years. It could take us 6 months. Only the Lord knows.

Isaiah 55:8-9 “ For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

HE has put it all in to place HIS way for OUR family. This is the way WE are to do it. Pray about the way YOU are to do it. He has been working on this with me for 3 years (almost to the month and day at the time of this writing) so that *I* see it is easy and light. All these steps they each want you to do is not only overwhelming for me, but complicated, especially when you start combining main "Resource GUIDES" to use as 1 study (listed at the MOH yahoo group).

I am SO excited and SO thankful to our LORD for making my inner most heartfelt cry to learn his word and world HIS way for our family to become not just a dream, but reality. o/

Seek the Lord for all things and allow him to direct your path in every way.

Job 14:15a "You will call and I will answer you;"

May the Lord bless you richly in all things. Enjoy your journey.

John 10:27 "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:"

Galatians 5:16-18 "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law."
