I Am From

I am from a small and rural town where the sunshine is always plenty, from bible stories, children’s storybooks, and a realm where children are allowed to dream to their heart’s content.

I am from a land of azure skies, white, sandy beaches and the ebbing tides of the Atlantic, from a place of endless dirt roads and rolling hills.

From a home full of godly love, a home that has entertained friends and neighbors, and a home that smelled of Pine Sol and morning breezes.

I am from the heather that grew along the pathway of our home; I am from the blackberry bushes and the persimmons that we gathered during the late autumn.

I am from Mama’s freshly baked dinner rolls and Daddy’s little treasures that he would bring us from his out-of-town business trips. I am from our family outings and field trips; from the long car rides and the constantly asked question, “Are we there yet?”

I’m from the beautiful hand-me-down clothes and toys that my momma would find at a yard sale, and from the countless hours my younger brother and I would spend outdoors picking blackberries, catching grasshoppers, and fishing until mother would call us in for dinner.

I’m from Robert Williams and Denise Flowers Williams. I’m from Paul Williams, Joyce Schock Williams, Dennis Flowers, and Barbara Gilooly Flowers.

I am from a line of determined women who can succeed with excellence, and sturdy men who are hard workers and find solutions to any given problem or task.

From a large family who once faced impeding obstacles many years ago, and a family who, at one time, could barely make ends meet.

I am from a family of New Testament Christians who believes in the sanctity of God’s word and the importance of wholly obeying His will for humanity.

I am from a rural town in Florida; and North Carolina, where many of my family dwell in the near the same area where my Indian ancestors once lived. I am from the Midwest, where many of my other ancestors lived and dwelt as farmers.

I am from my mother’s fresh-baked bread and my dad’s many food concoctions.

I am from my grandmother’s snow babies and my mother’s sentiment through everything she does for me and for others. My father's sweat and tears to take care of our family, even on days when he would have preferred to stay home.

I am from Christ, who died on the cross for an unworthy sinner like me. I am from God, who continues to mold me and make me after His will.

Something to think about for people young and old alike...

When you were 8 years old, your mom handed you an ice cream.
You thanked her by dripping it all over your lap.

When you were 9 years old, she paid for piano lessons.
You thanked her by never even bothering to practice.

When you were 10 years old she drove you all day, from soccer to one birthday party after another.
You thanked her by jumping out of the car and never looking back.

When you were 11 years old, she took you and your friends to the movies.
You thanked her by asking to sit in a different row.

When you were 12 years old, she warned you not to watch certain TV shows.
You thanked her by waiting until she left the house.

When you were 13, she suggested a haircut that was becoming.
You thanked her by telling her she had no taste.

When you were 14, she paid for a month away at summer camp.
You thanked her by "forgetting" to write a single letter.

When you were 15, she came home from work, looking for a hug.
You thanked her by having your bedroom door locked.

When you were 16, she taught you how to drive her car.
You thanked her by taking it every chance you could.

When you were 17, she was expecting an important call.
You thanked her by being on the phone all night.

When you were 18, she cried at your high school graduation.
You thanked her by staying out with your friends until dawn.

When you were 19, she paid for your college tuition, drove you to campus, and carried your bags.
You thanked her by purposely avoiding her calls when you were out with your friends after studies.

When you were 25, she helped to pay for your wedding, and she cried and told you how deeply she loved you.
You thanked her by moving half across the country and visiting her once every few years.

When you were 50, she fell ill and needed you to take care of her.
You thanked her by putting her in a nursing home when you were still able to take care of her.

And then, one day, she quietly died. And everything you never did came crashing down like thunder on YOUR HEART.

Yippee Ki Yay!

In honor of our dear friend Emma who recently won a Cowboy Contest with her poem, The Revenge of Jane , I have decided to show you my cheek-reddening (at least for me,anyway) song about a cowboy's life on the ranch.

Let me explain to you why I wrote this song: I wrote this song because my online English class threatened to tie me up and throw me out on the train tracks if I refused to create this song. (OK, maybe not, but the results would be just as devastating if I didn't create the song!) They also required me to use 'cowboy' words such as 'buttermilk', 'calico' and 'get along, little doggies' to give the song more of a 'cowboyish feel' to it. (I think they also told me that these phrases will come in handy when and if I decide to loot the bank.)

Without further ado, I now present to you my masterpiece, "A Cowboy's Life"

Jed was a wrangler,

A coyote strangler;

He was a rustler,

He knew how to hustle!

A grand forty-niner;

And always got the drop;

He had a big fifty,

That made him look nifty.

A friend of the buttermilk,

And a friend of the posse,

He knew how to take charge,

Even if he was bossy!

CHORUS:

He was a buckaroo,

And loved his red-eye!

He was a buckaroo,

And had cash in one’s six shooter.

He enjoyed shindigs,

With the calicoes,

Cowboy Name Generator

Words of Wisdom...

Words of Wisdom from the Voice of Experience... Me.

1.Be careful what you say and do, because it may come back to haunt you. When I woke up this morning, I had an embarrassing moment on my head. Eeeeeeee!! Get it off of me!! Heeeeeelp!

2. The word "Moonshine" does not mean "Moonbeam" anymore; therefore, do not say "Take a sip of that moonshine" when you mean "Look at that lovely moon, and see how the moonbeams shine brightly upon us!"

3. Whenever you slip and fall in front of your friends or family, spring back up and say, "TA DA!" It works every time.

4. Read carefully, and make sure you aren't reading "Marco Focus" instead of "Macro Focus," or "Singer Gets Long Awaited Invitation from the President" instead of "Signer Gets Long Awaited Invitation from the President."

5. Watch where you're going, or else, you'll end up running into a tree, park bench, or sliding glass door.

6. Don't have the mentality "If there's anything you can do, I can do better." Take, for example, a 12 year-old girl who tries to show her 10 year-old brother how much faster she can run on a treadmill. Her demise was literally FLYING off of the treadmill, and sustaining burns and scrapes from the frightening flight. No bueno.

7. "Faux" is pronounced "Foe," not "Fox."

8. Make sure you aren't the only one standing up if you think you heard the song leader said "Let's stand" instead of "Let's sing." If you are the only one standing, seat yourself immediately.

9. NEVER EVER assume that the plural word for "computer mouse" is "computer mouses." Just because it is an inanimate object, doesn't mean it does not share the same plurality as real, live mice.

10. Whenever you participate in a skating race, stay within the orange cones.

Happenings

Wow! It looks like you all remember me, after all. (Well, at least some of you. )

Ok, here's the update you all have been waiting for:

I am currently enrolled in five online classes for school (Chemistry, Spanish, English, Life Management, and Physical Education), and am currently waiting for them to place me in the second semester of Algebra II. I'm really enjoying the courses and I'm making excellent grades. My dad calculated my GPA as a 4.0 so I guess that means I'm doing very well. Isn't that exciting!

Last month, I took the SAT for the first time. I got the results back, wasn't too happy with them, so I'm going to try the ACT, instead. Oi... I'm not good with tests.

I've been babysitting out of the ying-yang, which is a really good thing. Also, I'm planning on getting a summer job soon, so please pray that I will get one and that I will do well in it. I'm trying to save money up for a car, insurance, and some other "Big Girl Toys," so I definitely need the money!

I am going to share with you all a current struggle of mine...

I am having a hard time allowing myself to grow up, meaning, I'm having a hard time accepting the added responsibility. Yes, I act very maturely (except I am very selfish, which I am very ashamed of and am trying to get rid of), but I am having a hard time accepting the added responsibility of being a young adult. I am terrified of driving, and I'm too impatient to watch my parents drive. I, unwittingly "expect" my parents to pay for everything, and most importantly, I'm terrified of going to college. All I can picture is the results, but I am not taking the time to analyze and think of what I will need to do to get to my results. I want to be a wife and mother more than anything, so I tend to spend a lot of my time dreaming of that instead of how I'm going to get there and what I am going to do in the meantime. Also, I'm still viewing my high school graduation and college and "growing up" as merely a dream instead of it being reality. --Sigh-- So, yes, this is what I am struggling with right now. I would love your feedback.

Enough about me -- what about you? What have you been up to?

I am soooo sorry I haven't kept up with commenting and writing! I have been missing you all like crazy!

I guess you want an update on me then, right?

Well, I am taking for online classes with Florida Virtual School (www.flvs.net) and I am loving it so far. I really like my online chemistry class, and I am so surprised at the grades I'm getting! (All A's so far!) I am really nervous about taking my online SAT Prep Class, though, so please pray for me.

Oh, and I'm in love with a certain iPod:

Yes, it's the brand-new iPod touch! It is 8GB and has wi-fi, so it is really awesome!

As some of you may already know, I have decided to write book reviews on the third Friday of every month. If you are an avid reader like I am, stick around and read what I have to say about the chosen "Book of the Month!"

Book of the month:

Let's Roll!

During one of my routine visits to the library, I came across a book that was very appealing to me,especially since it was written by the wife of a victim in the 9/11 attacks. This book, of course, was Let's Roll! by Lisa Beamer, wife of the late Todd Beamer.

After lightly examining the book, I decided to check it out. Yes, I was aware that it was going to be a highly upsetting and emotional book, but I was determined to read it from start to finish. Once picking up the book,though, I didn't want to put it down.

The beginning of the book takes the reader back to the fateful morning of September 11th, 2001 when the whole world was silenced by the terror in the sky. Lisa Beamer, whose husband was flying to San Fransico that day, had a queer feeling that her husband was on one of the hijacked flights.She called United Airlines to get information about the plane Todd was on, but had a hard time getting ahold of anyone. Then, the news announced something that turned her world upside down: The plane her husband was aboard crashed in a rural area in Pennsylvania.

The book, then, takes you into the life of Todd and Lisa Beamer. The author does an excellent job of describing the kind of person Todd was so that by the end of the book, you feel as if you have gained - as well as lost- a dear,one-of-a-kind friend.

Towards the end of the book, it brings you back to Lisa Beamer and how she was dealing with the terrible tragedy of her deceased husband. Eventually, the airlines confirmed his death, but that was all they could say. She was lost in sorrow. There was nothing that could console her of her terrible loss other than God, though she struggled to keep her faith strong. Then, she received a phone call from an operator who was the last one to speak with her husband, Todd. It was the operator who told Lisa that Todd did not die without a last fight. The operator told her that, while she was on the phone with Todd, he told her of what was going on in the plane and that the terrorists flying the plane were headed towards Washington D.C. Towards the end of the conversation with Todd, the operator heard him say, "Are you guys ready? Let's roll!" He put the phone down and fought to the very end.

People can only speculate what happend on that flight, but, with those very words, Lisa Beamer found immeasurable relief in knowing that her husband fought back and defended his country. Her husband, as well as the others who fought on that flight, were true Americans. They fought for something they believed in, even though they knew it would cost their lives.

I highly recommend this book. It will bring tears to your eyes, a smile on your face, and a deeper appreciation of being an American. Being an American is a powerful thing. When we came to this country, we all wanted freedom. Unfortunately, with freedom comes a price. Just like Christ paid the price by dying on the cross for our sins, we must, in return, be ready to fight for a cause we believe in.
