Edifying Fiction & True Stories

YES, THEY'RE ALL OURS!
Just an average family. Of fourteen.
Rick Boyer
Very, very humorous read. You'll love the style of Boyer's writing.
Anyone with more than the typical number of children in today's society will be able to relate to much of what he writes!

LUCY WINCHESTER
Christmas Carol Kauffman
As a girl, Lucy yearned for spiritual fellowship and understanding. Her father, however was a stern man who stood against religion of any sort.
Lucy's lifelong spiritual quest is set against a backdrop of two difficult marriages that included broken promises, sickness, numerous infant deaths, alcoholism, tragic accidents, and poverty. From the unspeakable joy of learning to know Christ as her Savior, Lucy stumbled through years of spiritual ignorance, doubt, disappointment and despair until she finally found peace again in Christ.
This true account reflects the goodness of God, patiently leading those who are thirsty to the fountain of Living Water. Readers who have known personal tragedy will be blessed with fresh courage by reading this book.

NOT IN DESPAIR
A true story of a broken home, a broken man and truth discovered
Harvey Yoder
This book wasn't what I expected it to be. Rather it was much more. A short blurb won't do it justice!
The story is true and follows "Ben" through a life of poor choices.
Reminds us all of the importance of living a godly life and taking care with each path we turn.
I couldn't put this book down as I read it! Excellent!

HENRY AND THE GREAT SOCIETY
H.L. Roush, Sr.
A captivating look at how simplicity can bless, and our busy society can rob us!
What happens when conveniences begin to make their presence in a society of simplicity? Read this and find out!
So true! I guarantee you won't look at your life quite the same after reading this!

CIRCLE OF LOVE
Romaine Stauffer
With remarkable insight, the author has woven the personal accountability of the character, John Shenk, with the collective accountability of his church community. No one can read this book unmoved.
Follow the path of a wayward man. See how it affects the whole of his life!

JOURNAL OF TEARS
Elizabeth Lapp
A woman grapples with the pain of loneliness and rejection when her husband leaves her for another woman.
    True account.

MOUNTAINS OF SPICES
An allegory about human weaknesses and strengths comparing the spices in Song of Solomon to the Fruits of the Spirit
Hannah Hurnard
I do not usually care for allegories, but find Hurnard's to be very good. They always touch me and teach me more about myself and my relationship with God! I believe they will do the same for you as well!

STEPPING HEAVENWARD
One woman's journey to godliness
Mrs. E. Prentiss
This is an all-time favorite, special book of mine. It compels me to strive toward a closer relationship with the Lord. I want to glorify Him in all that I do, and like Katherine, I too often find I fail!
Written in diary form, I had a hard time putting this down! It was too true to life and pricked me many times as I read! I could so relate to many of the struggles of "Katherine"!

HINDS FEET ON HIGH PLACES
The beloved story of Much-Afraid and her exciting journey to the High Places.
Hannah Hurnard
Another allegory. My personal favorite!
Be led to new heights on your own spiritual journey!

GOODBYE IS NOT FOREVER
Amy George
The true story of Amy George and her experiences through World War 2.
Captivating, heartbreaking and awe-inspiring. My own faith was driven to greater heights as I read the experiences of this woman.
I guarantee you won't be able to forget this story!

SANDI'S ANCHOR OF HOPE
Romaine Stauffer
This is the true story of a painful journey from the hopelessness of a battered childhood to hope and security in Christ.
Sandi's home was not only broken, it was shattered repeatedly.
Rejection, abuse, neglect, drunkenness, betrayal, upheaval... all were part of Sandi's childhood.
This true story tells of a sad childhood and confused teen years... but also about answers found only in God. Sandi learned that where sin abounds, grace does so much more abound.

HARVEST OF TEARS
Alma Dettwiler
Bad choices produce bitter feasts.
Originally published in 1968, this book presents a timeless truth.
As a young woman, Nancy is caught up in the whirl of difficulties at home, budding relationships, her past Christian training, and her own will. We find her as an older woman being battered by the miltiplied consequences of her wrong choices.
    True account.

THE EARTH IS ROUND
Margaret Epp
The unforgettable story of Cornelia and her people... a sharp reminder that peace and prosperity can quickly change.

REBEKAH'S DIARY
Rebekah Pearl
The diary of Rebekah Pearl as she minister's to others on a missionary basis. Excellent, fun read!

Prayers for Home Schooling Moms
Howe

Review
"Prayers for Homeschooling Moms" is a unique work of art in the realm of homeschooling materials because it paints a picture that is true to real life homeschooling. In the midst of brief vignettes, we find heartfelt prayers being lifted to the Father and our hearts are strengthened and encouraged for the tasks in our own homes. Michele Howe has an amazing ability to penetrate to the heart of the issue that so many of us face in our homeschooling endeavors, and her prayers give wings to our own concerns - bringing them to the proper place - the throne of God.--Diana Waring

A Survivor's Guide to Home Schooling
Shackelford/White

           From Library Journal
Recent estimates by the Home School Legal Defense Association state that one percent (600,000-800,000) of school-age children in the United States are being schooled at home, and this number is expected to increase. Whatever the reasons for opting for home schooling, the decision to undertake it is not one to be taken lightly, according to these authors. A Survivor's Guide to Home Schooling is "homey," containing anecdotal illustrations to present a basic overview of the situations that can occur and for which a parent should prepare if home schooling is to be accomplished with success. It is an easily read book for those who are just beginning to consider the home school option or as a "pick-me-up" for home schoolers facing burnout. Home School: Taking the First Step is the book all parents need when deciding on the question of home schooling. The book's step-by-step approach is excellent and covers not only the legal issues, including a state-by-state analysis of laws and requirements, but also the planning process, curriculum and materials needs, teaching preparation, and an excellent listing of readings and resources. There is also a listing, with addresses and some phone numbers, of support groups and services available to the home schooling parent. The glossary and indexes make this an excellent reference source. This title is essential for all public and academic libraries to support questions and research. Mary Pride's The Big Book of Home Learning ( 1986), The Next Book of Home Learning ( 1987), and The New Big Book of Home Learning ( 1988, all Good News Pub.) are also valuable for home schooling-- Ed. -- A.R. Huggins, Memphis State Univ. Libs.

     How can my husband help?

Writing with wisdom, candor and humor, the authors share the situations, solutions, successes and yes, even the failures home teachers face. A Survivor's Guide to Home Schooling offers practical suggestions, support, and encouragement, all in light of Scriptural guidelines.

Covering issues like time management, space usage and materials, Vicki Caruana addresses a variety of organizational needs to help families structure not only their work areas, but also their thinking, their paperwork--and each other! By the book's end, she inspires readers to re-evaluate, reorganize, and form new habits, leaving behind the stress and inefficiency of a cluttered life.

Ourselves
  Charlotte Mason

The classic reference by the founder of the Home Schooling Movement.

Inside page:
"Sometimes treasures of a unique value are unearthed while rummaging in the past. Charlotte Mason was a distinguished British educator at the turn of the century whose work had a wide and lasting influence. At that time, many of the upper-class children were educated at home, and Mason's insights changed their lives. Her ideas were also brought to life in many schools, which gave the children an unusual and rich start in their education and development.
Nearly a hundred years later, a changing society often leaves us disappointed with its tangled, worn-out and narrow practices in education.
We chart a "falling capital" in the product that matters most: the life education and character of our children. is it not the moment to look at some of the roots?

Imagine where the church would be today if the men in it were respected as they ought to be by their wives. What power would God unleash through godly men who were respected in their homes?

In the Song of Solomon, we read, "Like and apple tree among the trees of the woods, so is my beloved among the sons." So what is your perspective when you look at your husband? Is it biblical or does it stem from all those modern lies which surround us?

"Growing Up God's Way ~ A guide for getting children ready for school and life from birth on"
by John A Stormer
Getting children ready for school and life has to start at birth or before it and an never stop. Following World War II, a generation of parents lost sight of that truth and the tragedies have been multiplying eer since. This book documents how child-rearing methods have changed and the tragic cproblems which result when children are allowed to "just grow up".
By examining the methods used by successful, dedicated parents in history and during Bible times, John Stormer gives today's parents a vision of what they can accomplish in their children's lives.
Step-by-step instructions for training children from birth to age five are followed by practical principles which will help parents build happy, successful Christian lives for themselves and satisfying, solvent marriages.

"Christian Living in the Home"
By Jay E. Adams
Building a strong family is a challenge in the best of times. How much more when marriage is being redefined, biblical approaches to discipline are under constant fire, and "family values" is more a campaign slogan than a personal priority of elected officials.
The family is in trouble, today. Stable homes have become a quaint anomaly, rather than the norm. To check the erosion of the home and family as the basic unit of society, Jay Adams calls us to a careful understanding and application of scriptural principles.
Christians will find this volume full of practical, biblical advice on Christ-centered family living, communicating with family members, family guidance and discipline, living with an unbelieving spouse, and many other areas.

"Aaron's Way ~ The Journey of the Strong-Willed child"
by Kendra Smiley (with Aaron Smiley)

Aaron's Way will help stressed-out parents realize that:

    You are not alone
The strong-willed child has thought and behavior patterns that can be understood and anticipated
and there are insights into the strategies that can help you and your child on the journey!

"Parenting in the Pew ~ Guiding your children into the joy of worship"
by Robbie Castleman
Sunday morning isn't a success if we have only managed to keep the kids quiet. And there's more to church for kids than trying out their new coloring books. Children are at church for the same reason Mom and Dad are: For the privilege of worshiping God!
Burning with an infectious passion for worship, Robbie has learned how to teach children to praise God. She shows us how important it is to take our children's worship seriously. And then, with nitty-gritty advice, and a touch of humor, she shows us how we can help our children participate in the most worthwhile and exciting act anybody can do!

"Parenting From the Heart ~ Practical Parenting from a Mom of 14 Children"
by Marilyn Boyer
I loved this book! I've read it a few times! Mainly because I long to be more like this author, and do more with my children for the glory of God! I advise every mother to read this book. It's terrific!
"Through this book, you can experience the vision of a womman who gave birth to and home educated her fourteen children while lovingly serving a husband, and - through her example - blessed an entire home school movement" -- Doug Phillips, Vision Forum Ministries
"Reading [this book] is like a friendly visit at the kitchen table over a steaming cup of tea with a godly, older sister in the lord, gleaning from her many years of experience and gentle wisdom." -- Tracy Klicka, National home school speaker and writer, wife of Chris Klicka, senior counsel for the Home School Legal Defense Foundation

"Mothers are People Too"
by Linda Howard
My husband was visiting his grandparents in Virginia, having taken only a few of the children with him. While there, he saw this book on his grandparents' bookshelf and thought of me after picking it up and skimming through it. He got me a copy of my own.
It's a great read! Short, readable chapters. Some things I didn't agree with, but that's the case with any book.
    Christian-based, and encouraging.
"Linda frankly admits that a common malady among mothers of small children is "crazyitis". And at any age, children have a way of overwhelming grown ups - especially mothers." (back cover)

"To Train Up a Child"
Michael & Debi Pearl
An excellent, though blunt, read on child-rearing. If you're not happy with things as they are in your house, this is the book to read. It's encouraging and very helpful. It helps you see that things can be fixed! It's also great for those who are about to be faced with the issue of discipline - those expecting... or who've recently had a child. Parenting begins before birth!

When You Feel Like SCREAMING -- Help For Frustrated Mothers
Pat Holt & Grace Ketterman, MD

In this easy to read book, you can learn why you do what you do, how it affects you and your children, and how you can achieve quiet control of yourself and your family.

What the Bible Says About Child Training -- 2nd Edition
J. Richard Fugate
Biblical guidelines, successful parenting, setting standards, teaching according to stages of growth, understanding negative behavior and conquering rebellion, punishing lovingly and justly, producing self-confident and moral young adults, life preparation.

This is a study designed to help parents better understand their role and discover the mechanics for successfully raising children. To accomplish these ends this book will carefully define parental accountability, authority, and responsibility. It also describes the nature of a child and biblically defined stages of development. With these principles firmly in place, this book will present a Biblical system for training children God's way.

Raising a Large Family - Managing Your Finances, Budgeting Your Time, Successful Nurturing for Anyone With Three or More Children
Katherine Schlaerth, M.D
Note: This book is NOT written from a Christian standpoint. But I have chosen to include it, anyway, with this "warning". While I do not agree with some of the things Ms. schlaerth has to say, there are other very helpful ideas. Just be forewarned that there are a few "watermelon seeds" to "spit" as you read this one!
Contents include: When baby makes five, Helpful economics and strategies, a day in the life, chores, TV, and other dilemmas of growing up, disciplinne, sibling interactions, time for each child, high maintenance children, personalities and successful learning, the working mom, "going crazy", fathers and the gradually empty "nest".

I'll Love You Forever - Accepting Your Child When Your Expectations are Unfulfilled
Norm and Joyce Wright
Discover the joys and challenges of unconditional parenting. When husband and wife become father and mother, the miracle of life accelerates their hopes. Will little Tommy one day be a professional athlete? Will Suzy get an academic scholarship?
Dreams of the future are fun - until they're shattered by reality. Tommy was born severely handicapped. Suzy ran away from home and has not been heard from for months. The bitter pain of disappointment often tears a marriage and family apart. There are no easy ways out. You'd have to go through it to really understand.
Norm and Joyce Wright have. And God's incredible strength held them together in the face of overwhelming challenges and made them even stronger. Their difficult experiences with Matthew, who was born mentally disabled, and Sherryl, who took a rebellious direction for several years have given them a special ability to provide encouragement and hope for every parent dealing with the death of a dream for his or her child.
This book is a fast read. It's a touching, transparent look at the victories they won through unconditional love. And you see how you can do the same!

A Mom Just Like You
Vickie Farris and Jayme Farris Metzgar
The homeschooling mother.
From the back: "Let's face it... the bulk of the everyday work of homeschooling falls on Mom's shoulders. As rewarding and fulfilling as it is, it is in no way easy. No one knows this better than homeschooling mother of ten, Vickie Farris.
"If you've ever wondered, 'Okay, so how do you do it?' you just picked up the right book. Through her warm, practical style, Vickie will fill you with encouragement and practical suggestions for those days when the challenge seems overwhelming."
I really found this to be an excellent book, and have read it three times, already. There is so much within. Personal experiences and reflections of another mother that remind us we're not "abnormal". Advice on homeschooling a houseful, giving ourselves and our wills over to the Lord, finding time for all of the children and all of our responsibilities... Nicely written! Helpful!

The Power of a Praying Parent
Stormie Omartian

Learn how to turn to the Father and place every detail of your child's life in His loving and capable hands: Safety, development of character, peer pressure, school, marriage, friends, relationship with God, family relationships, adolescence, career choices... and more!
Whether your child is three or thirty-three, it's never too late to discover the joy that comes from being part of God's work in your child's life.

Bringing Out the Best in Your Child - 80 Ways to Focus on Every Kid's Strengths
Cynthia Ulrich Tobias & Carol Funk
What seems to be your child's greatest weaknesses could turn out to be his greatest strength!
Sometimes the traits and behaviors that seem most frustrating or annoying in our children are indicators of positive strengths and future successes. A strong will may exhibit leadership material. Arguing may indicate negotiating skills. When you identify our child's behavior, and see beyond it to the positive strength it contains, we will then be able to help him succeed by working with his learning style.

Jumping Ship -- What to Do so Your Children don't Jump Ship to the World When they Get Older
Michael & Debi Pearl
The Pearls notice that there is a troubling trend that is rising up in some of the "back to basics" homeschool groups. Their children are discontent and rebellious, jumping ship as soon as they think they can survive without the family. Some are as young as sixteen.
Parents are crying, "Where did we go wrong?" and "What can we do?" Michael addressed this issue in several articles published in 2006 in several articles published in 2006 in the NGJ Magazine. The articles proved to be so popular and helpful that Michael edited them further and added new material. Then he included two more chapters covering issues not previously discussed.
    You have them right here.
    Great book.

Created for Work - Practical Insights for Young Men
Bob Schultz
All young men should be on the road to developing a healthy attitude toward work. Honest, productive work is the backbone of strong families and blessed nations.
Modern culture seems to be addicted to ease and entertainment. It has produced a generation of educated, yet often dishonest, unproductive and weak-willed men.
God desires a higher standard. He is looking for young men who do not shhy away from hard work, who are not afraid to get their hands dirty, who can follow directions, think creatively, respect authority and happily complete their duties in a timely manner.
These are the ones He is training up to be future fathers, teachers and leaders.
This book is a good read for all parents, and inspires young men and offers the tools and encouragement they need to embrace God's ways and always give an honest day's work.

Raising Godly Tomatoes - Loving Parenting With Only Occasional Trips to the Woodshed
L. Elizabeth Krueger
Weary of struggling with your toddler? Frustrated with teh failing advice of secular psychologists and permissive parenting gurus? Leery of the strict focus on rules and the hyper-regimentation advocated elsewhere?
If you are simply looking for a straightforward approach to parenting that focuses on teh heart of your child, as well as his outward actions, then this book is for you.
    This book is terrific!

Christian Pregnancy and Childbirth/Miscarriage & Loss

"Be Fruitful and Multiply ~ What the Bible Says About Having Children"
by Nancy Campbell
Can you imagine attending a wedding where th efamily and friends offered the blessing below to a new bride?

"Be Thou the other of Thousands of Millions and Let Thy Seed Possess the Gate..."

Yet those words of encouragement beautifully communicate the heart of God's command to Christian husbands and wives that they be exceedingly fruitful and raise children who will innfluence all of culture and society for the glory of God.
There is no escaping the fact that the Bible is dogmatically pro-child. In fact, it declares unapologetically that the birth of many children is a source of blessing, that a key reason for marriage is to bring forth children and that parents should actively seek such blessings.
But if this is true... why do so many Christian married couples choose to "cut off their seed"? What if any biblical basis exists for deliberately thwarting the birth of children? Is it evevr "good stewardship" to prevent children on the basis of financial concerns? These and related questions are addressed in light of Scripture.

"Bedrest Before Baby -- What's a Mother to Do?"
Patricia D. Isennock
A survival handbook for high-risk moms. Includes a personal journal of the author's own bedrest. High reliance on the Lord is stressed, along with practical ways of coping and making it through the days or weeks of expecting your new baby.

"Pregnancy Bedrest"
Johnston & Kraut
A survival handbook for high-risk moms. Includes a personal journal of the author's own bedrest. High reliance on the Lord is stressed, along with practical ways of coping and making it through the days or weeks of expecting your new baby.

This book is decidedly Christian. Full of Bible verses to learn and to cling to. Not only does the author delve into the process of labor and birth, she also discusses the emotional and spiritual side to pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period.

I love to use natural remedies and therapies, first. Unfortunately, many books on natural healthcare are written with a "new age" bent. This is one book that is not like that. Shonda Parker is a committed Christian, and all of her writings spring directly from that.

Not specifically Christian, but ever so much useful information! I have included this book because it answers so many questions and addresses a myriad of concerns to expectant mothers.

Mr. and Mrs. Sears are proclaiming Christians. I was disappointed by some of their wordings in this book and felt they could have had a stronger spiritual emphasis. But it was a very helpful book throughout my pregnancies, regardless. I think it will bless you, too!

For any woman considering a VBAC, this is a simple, easily-read, medically specific book that arms you with the encouragement you need to avoid a cesarean section that is not warranted.

Labor is painful. This author's refreshing writing acknowledges this fact, yet offers a wide variety of helpful coping mechanisms and "tools" to prepare for and work through labor and delivery. Ms. Lieberman realizes that what works for one woman, may not work for another!

Everyone who's had a baby is familiar with this book. It's packed full of information! Not specifically Christian.

By the authors of "What To Expect When You're Expecting", this companion volume addresses a healthy diet. Most of us cannot eat exactly to their standards, but it's important to realize the wisdom of eating foods in a form closer to what God intended us to. Your baby is worth it!

A Virtuous Woman defines the Christian woman's role as she steps beyond her home innto the church and foreign fields. Though she may never venture much farther than her own small community, her faith and godly example spread as ripples sent adrift in the ocean.
