I have been busy reading my Teach Magazine, this quarter is on Purity.
The article called "Am I Pure Or Polluted" examines the thought, "What do I choose to pay attention to,experience and enjoy?" I really enjoyed the article and it really made me think about what we are putting in our minds that are not pleasing to the Lord.
There are also some good recipes like Ice Cream Mud Pie and Glazed Pork Chops. If you have not looked into the pages of TEACH Magazine you are missing a great blessing.

Haleigh has finally had the opportunity to sing in the Abbott Hill Wanderers.
The band performed their spring finale and it was a good one.
The kids have done such a great job this year.

Update on Yoda

The kids have named the little bull Yoda. I am not particularly fond of it but it will do. He has a Y on his forehead so that is how he got his name.
He seems to be doing quite well, he is feeding from a bucket and loves grain. He is plumping up and follows you around like a puppy when we get in the pen with him. I know this will get more difficult as he gets bigger but hopefully we are out of the water with him. He has acquired a sore on the top of his butt to the side of his tail, it looks like he rubbed up against the side of the shelter where the boards are rough. I have never experienced this before but it was covered with maggots. Yuck!! Our friends that are helping us with the cow adventure said "Oh yeah that is good", GOOD! I thought, "Oh yeah they will eat all the bad flesh and then fall off it happens to all cows with wounds".
Well I still think it is Yuck!, Anyway most of the maggots were gone today and it looks pretty good, so I guess it is true. Boy are we learning alot.

Our new farm adventure

Well, we headed for Clarks animal auction April 27th, we were looking for pigs. As the items pulled in and were put in there proper places, tools, household items, farm stuff, plants, etc. outside to be auctioned first and the animals in their pens to be auctioned later we were browsing the items to see what we could find of interest. There is a lot of good things you can find at an auction.
There was so much stuff coming in that they had to turn some away. We arrived at 9:30 and at 11:00 the auction started. We bid on a few things outside not much we were waiting for the animals. It was a long wait, I worked on some knitting projects and read my TEACH Magazine this is my favorite magazine for Godly encouragement and homeschool advise.
The animals started rolling in at about 3 pm. The birds and rabbits go first and then the large animals.
A pair of turkeys went for $75, wow! As the cows started to come in my husband did on one and got it for $55. The next batch rolled in and he bid on another one, Two more batches he bid on two more, we were done, 4 cows later and $145 we headed home. It was about 7 pm. Here are some pics of the cuties.

The pigs were just outrages there was only one truck of piglets that came in with a $65 reserve.
So, we are enjoying out cows and everything seems to be going ok but then the jersey, the cute brown one in the first picture is not doing well. He doesn't make it and then we have a few good days, about a week later while everyone is struggling with the stomach bug except me, we loose the one in the last photo, two days later we loose the one in the second picture! Now we are down to one cow, we moved him out of the area where the others were and he seems to be doing ok so far. It appears that they may have had shippers disease. This is due to the fact that their eating may not have been regular while they were being shipped and the stress of the move on top of that shocks their system. It is a quick thing that is for sure.

Our meat birds arrive May 11th as well and as you can see below they are tiny. I will post pics of the speed of growth, you will be amazed.

We lost a wonderful friend this week. She was a Titus 2 woman and I will miss her very much.

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Charlene Woodard Hewett, 85, died peacefully and unexpectedly March 15, 2009, at home. She was born June 23, 1923, in Dover-Foxcroft, the daughter of Ralph and Ethel (Lindsey) Woodard. She grew up in Dover-Foxcroft and graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1942. She married Charles A. Hewett, May 14, 1949, and was widowed in 2002 after 53 years of marriage. Charlene worked many years as an AT&T telephone operator and was active in Sebec Corner Baptist Church, where she had been a member since 1977. She was an avid quilt maker, and enjoyed gardening and crafts. She is survived by three sons, Victor of Ashburn, Va., Russell and his wife, Vandy, of Dover-Foxcroft, and Roger and his wife, Joan, of Plainfield, N.H.; two sisters, Ruth Shuman of Modesto, Calif., and Gloria Burgess of Carmel; four grandsons, four granddaughters, seven great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Gail Doore of Dover-Foxcroft. She was an exceptionally kind and gracious woman who was dearly loved by many. Friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, at Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, where funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19, with Pastor Isaiah Hill officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the family lot at Dover Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Charlene's memory may be made to Sebec Corner Baptist Church, 285 Milo Road, Sebec, ME 04481. Harry Harlan Bouder III
BOWERBANK - Harry Harlan Bouder III, 65, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jan. 11, 2009. He was born Dec. 7, 1943, in Ephrata, Pa., and was a very loved and respected husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a well-established businessman for many years at Harry's Garage, Abbot. He is survived by his wife, Maria; three daughters, Barbie, Patty and Bianca; three granddaughters, Sarah, Miranda and Deonna; a son-in-law, Jim Snyder; and his sister, Shirlan Newcomer and her husband, Mervin, of Ephrata, Pa. He will be missed by many not only by the church members of Sebec Corner Baptist Church, but also his faithful customers at the garage. A memorial will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at Sebec Baptist Church, Sebec. Everyone is welcome. Lets remember him as loving, caring and honest, and for his love for God. One of my sisters in Christ lost her husband Sunday night. He died suddenly on the way to the hospital. It has really put a lot of thoughts in my mind about life. "It is but a vapor' my husband keeps saying. As we prepare for his memorial service it gets pretty busy. Haleigh has been practicing her heart out to present the music for the service, I have been making calls for the food and Jim has to prepare to set up the church with help of other men in the church. While I was making calls to organize the food for the reception my Mother in Law called to say that Bill, Jim's dad broke his ankle going out to get the paper. It was not a little break either it was a complete detached break and he is now in need of surgery to put screws in to hold him together. To top it off he has had a quadruple bipass a few years ago and needs a stress test to see if he can handle the surgery. He is anemic and diabetic, so......... it can't be easy. But I thank the Lord that he is in control and that we can be thankful for things that happen during these times. Maria's daughter was home from college with her when Harry died. Maria has been a great strength for Bianca and Bianca has allowed Maria to reflect on the Lord through this in order to comfort Bianca. Jim's dad is in a hospital and receiving good care. His mother was home to find Bill before he froze to death in the driveway, PTL for that. We are here for a short time and should think about the things we say to people, and the things we do or do not do for people, it could be the last thing we say to them or do for them We should try to do our best to be a blessing to people that we love and not bicker about the little things that really don't amount to anything. Today, reflect on your life and what you are doing with it, is it going to be remembered as a good life or one full of strife and bitterness. The Lord has something for all of us to do in our lifetime, do you know what your is at this time? I think we should always be searching for that as it changes with the seasons I am sure. The Origins of Thanksgiving

Americans are beginning to forget the important origins of our national Thanksgiving holiday. Its spiritual significance is no longer taught in our nation’s public schools. In fact, most school children today are taught that Thanksgiving originated when the Pilgrims invited their Indian friends to dinner to thank them for providing sustenance after the Mayflower landed. As with much of modern American revisionist history, there really is much more to the story.

Coming to America
The Atlantic crossing in the fall of 1620 had been an extremely difficult journey for the Pilgrims. For two months, 102 people were wedged into what was called the “tween decks” of the Mayflower—the ship’s cargo space with only about five-and-a-half feet of headroom. No one was allowed above deck because of the terrible storms. This was no pleasure trip.

The Pilgrims comforted themselves on their journey by singing from the Book of Psalms. This “noise” irritated one of the ship’s paid crewmembers. He told the Pilgrims he was looking forward to throwing their corpses overboard after they succumbed to the routine illnesses common on such voyages. As it turned out, this crewmember himself was the only person to die on the voyage and be thrown overboard. God providentially protected His own people. A little-known fact about the Mayflower is that this ship normally carried a cargo of wine; and the wine spillage from previous voyages had soaked the beams, acting as a disinfectant to prevent the spread of disease.

During one terrible storm, the main beam of the mast cracked. Death was certain if this beam could not be repaired. At that moment, the whole Pilgrim adventure could very easily have ended on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Providentially, the Pilgrims had with them a large iron printing press screw. That screw repaired the beam, saving the ship and all on board.

“Land Ho!”
After sixty-six days at sea, land was sighted off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, not the place these Pilgrims wanted to be. They intended to establish their new colony in the northern parts of Virginia (which then extended to the Hudson River in modern-day New York), but two factors interrupted their plans. The winds had blown them off course, yes; but they later learned that other Englishmen who wanted to settle in the same part of Virginia had actually bribed the ship’s crew to land them farther north.

Despite this chicanery, God was in charge and the Pilgrims landed exactly where God wanted them to be. Had they actually made landfall near the Hudson River, they most certainly would have been immediately attacked by hostile Indians. Instead, they arrived at the one spot along the coast where hostile Indians had been providentially removed from the land.

Many years before the Mayflower journey, local Indians had captured a Frenchman on a fishing expedition to that region. Just as they were about to kill him, the Frenchman warned them God would be angry, would destroy them all, and would replace them with another nation. The Indians boastfully replied that his God could never kill them. Yet, a year or two before the Pilgrims arrived in this very same region, nearly all the native inhabitants had been wiped out by a plague.

Help Arrives
Despite this miraculous provision of safety from hostile Indians, the Pilgrims barely survived their first winter on the Cape. Only four families remained intact; but God was still faithful. In the spring of 1621, He sent Squanto, an English-speaking Indian who offered to teach the Pilgrims how to survive in this strange new land.

Squanto was one of only a few local Indians who escaped the plague. He had been captured as a young man and taken to England as a slave. During that time he mastered the English language. When he was freed, he returned to his native territory on the Cape shortly before the Pilgrims arrived. Probably the most important thing Squanto taught the Pilgrims was how to plant the native winter staple crop--corn.

The Pilgrims thanked God for this wonderful helper. They also repaid Squanto by sharing with him the most valuable treasure they had brought with them from England—the Gospel. Squanto died a year or two after coming to the aid of the Pilgrims, but before his death he asked them to pray with him that he might go to be with their God in Heaven.

Peace and Thankfulness
Squanto introduced other Indians to the Pilgrims, and these Indians were also impressed with the Pilgrims’ God. During the summer of 1621, it appeared the year’s corn harvest would not survive a severe drought. The Pilgrims responded by calling for a day of fasting and prayer. By the end of the day, it was raining. The rain saved the corn, which miraculously sprang back to life. One of the Indians who observed this miracle remarked that the Pilgrims’ God must be a very great God because when the Indians pow-wowed for rain, it always rained so hard that the corn stalks were broken down. They noticed the Pilgrims’ God acted differently by sending a very gentle rain that did not damage the corn harvest.

It was that miraculous corn harvest in 1621 that provided grain for the Pilgrims’ first Thanksgiving meal with their Indian friends and helpers. The evidence of history shows that on this first Thanksgiving Day, both the Pilgrims and Indians thanked God for His great provision and for His goodness toward them all.

Unlike other Europeans who came to America, these Bible-believing Pilgrims were model Christians in their dealings with the native populations. During their first year on the Cape, Squanto, acting as a friend and interpreter, had assisted the Pilgrims in negotiating an important peace treaty with Chief Massasoit, leader of the nearby Wampanoag Indians. The two populations, Indian and Pilgrim, kept that treaty of peace for more than fifty years.

The Tradition Continues
The story of Thanksgiving doesn’t end there. The holiday itself was not officially celebrated until almost 170 years later, after the Revolutionary War had been won and our American Constitution had been adopted. In 1789, Congress approved the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the Constitution. Congress then “recommended a day of public thanksgiving and prayer” to thank God for blessing America. President Washington declared November 26, 1789, as the first national day of prayer and thanksgiving to the Lord.

Another 75 years later, after the Civil War ended, President Abraham Lincoln officially established the last Thursday in November as a day to acknowledge “the gracious gifts of the Most High God,” which He had bestowed on America. Every president continued this tradition until 1941 when Congress officially made Thanksgiving a national holiday.

Teach Your Children
Now that you know the true story of Thanksgiving, this year make sure your children and grandchildren learn it too. As America is currently facing serious challenges both at home and abroad, let’s join together with countless generations before us in giving thanks to God for blessing and preserving our nation. Let’s make sure that all our children and grandchildren learn Whose hand of protection has been on America; and let’s all pray that He will continue to bless and sustain our nation as we continue to acknowledge and honor Him.

Moose Hunt

Well we are back from our moose hunt. I am not going to give you many details. I am tired and want to really explain everything with pictures. I will tell you that I did get my moose, he was 732 pounds with an 11 point rack and a 39" spread, he is a real beauty. I did shoot it and I can't wait for deer season.
As a bonus Jim got a trophy black bear, 298 pounds.
You will just have to check back later for details and pictures.
It will probably take me a week or so to get it all put together. Please check back later for the entire adventure.

We were going to visit friends in Bradford a couple of weeks ago. When we got to the Bradford Rd we spotted a moose. We drove up the road a bit and turned around. It was still there and fortunately I had my video camera.
I started to try and record it. I was zoomed in so much I couldn't find it for a bit. As I was videoing many people stopped and watched and talked. I removed the audio from the video because of all the conversations that were going around.
It has taken me a while to get it loaded for your viewing pleasure. So here it is.

Common Mistakes Made by New Homeschoolers

The following list contains some of the more common mistakes that are often made by families new to homeschooling. These items are in random order and are by no means all of the mistakes that could be made, nor is the existence of this list a guarantee that all new homeschoolers will make these mistakes. In an effort to help families avoid these errors, I have included links to other articles containing further help, encouragement, or explanations.

1. Doubting their ability to teach their own children

2. A. Attempting to copy the schedule, curriculum, or lifestyle of another homeschooling family
B. Attempting to copy public school classroom models for time schedules, room arrangements, or teaching methods

3. Being overly strict with schoolwork, teaching methods, and discipline, thinking that is how to avoid homeschooling failure

4. A. Leaving the house too often, due to over-involvement
B. Not leaving the house enough, due to fear or due to a too-intensive load of schoolwork

5. Trying to do too much -- too many subjects, too many activities, or too many projects

6. Viewing the household chores as Mom's Work, instead of as a team activity that benefits everyone

7. Assuming that what they may have heard about homeschooling is true, without checking into the facts: legal accountability requirements, time or financial commitment, or curriculum availability

8. Giving too much information on official documents

9. Refusing to try alternate methods or materials, even when something is not working well, feeling that changing methods will bring inconsistency

10. Giving up too quickly, instead of allowing themselves time to adapt to this totally new lifestyle (the second year is much easier than Year #1)

Once again, beginning to homeschool your children does not mean that you will make any or all of the above mistakes, especially if you attempt to tailor the academics to your children's interests and fit the educational experiences into your family's lifestyle (instead of the other way around). Peppermint Tea update

Well I tried the peppermint tea. It was pretty good. I have to tell you that I was not feeling well, allergies or something going on, scratchy throat and sinus headache.
I had two cups of this tea and I really felt better.
