<title>Eli Whitney, Boy Mechanic by Dorothea Snow Chapters 1-5</title>
<description>
    I am going to narrate each chapter to my mom after I read it:Chapter 1:&amp;nbsp; Crows in the CornfieldWhen he was a boy, he was scaring crows (why) to keep them off the corn.&amp;nbsp; They needed the corn to survive the winter.&amp;nbsp; The next day they were going to have pancakes for breakfast.&amp;nbsp; He was wondering how he was going to finish his mother's paddle for her birthday.&amp;nbsp; He decided he was going to set a trap.&amp;nbsp; Eli went into the barn and got a big basket.&amp;nbsp; He tied some string to a stick and made it so that the basket was standing up.&amp;nbsp; He sprinkled corn kernels under the basket. Some crows went to the basket and started eating the kernels; he pulled the string but the birds got so frightened they flew away.&amp;nbsp; He tried it again.&amp;nbsp; The same thing happened.&amp;nbsp; And again it happened.&amp;nbsp; He didn't catch one.&amp;nbsp; The fourth time there was a brave crow; he went under the basket.&amp;nbsp; Eli pulled the string and the basket fell on top of the crow.&amp;nbsp; He reached his arm under the basket, but he didn't feel the crow.&amp;nbsp; He stuck his head and shoulders in.&amp;nbsp; He almost got the crow but then he flew out and the basket fell on Eli.&amp;nbsp; His sister came out with his lunch.&amp;nbsp; He felt really sad.&amp;nbsp; He didn't want his sister to see his sobs.Chapter 2:&amp;nbsp; A New HelperHis father was going to get another person to help in the barn.&amp;nbsp; He had to go to Boston.&amp;nbsp; It took a couple of days.&amp;nbsp; He brought back a man that was taller than Eli's father.&amp;nbsp; Richard said it was going to rain.&amp;nbsp; It poured.&amp;nbsp; His mother was going to make him a linen shirt if they had a good crop of flax.&amp;nbsp; Eli had to keep on weeding the field to have a good crop.&amp;nbsp; The linen shirt is for wealthy boys.&amp;nbsp; He wanted a red and white checked shirt.&amp;nbsp; His sister and brother gave Mrs. Whitney plenty of gifts.&amp;nbsp; And Eli gave her the paddle.&amp;nbsp; Chapter 3:&amp;nbsp; The Fall of the YearEli and Betsey gathered leaves for baking bread.&amp;nbsp; They were also looking for a tree that would be the right size for a broom for mother.&amp;nbsp; They found a small birch tree.&amp;nbsp; Eli took some string from his pocket and measured how thick the tree was.&amp;nbsp; First he wrapped the string around the tree.&amp;nbsp; Then he figured out the thickness by folding the string in thirds.&amp;nbsp; (moms note:&amp;nbsp; wow!&amp;nbsp; what a smart kid.&amp;nbsp; Circumference = Pi x Diameter, and Pi is about equal to &quot;3&quot; - I'm impressed!)Mr. Burkett&amp;nbsp; asked&amp;nbsp; the children where&amp;nbsp; their parents were.&amp;nbsp; They told&amp;nbsp; him that&amp;nbsp; father was in his shop and mother was in the house.&amp;nbsp; Mr. Burkett&amp;nbsp; invited them&amp;nbsp; over to a husking bee.&amp;nbsp; They would get together and the boys would pick up corn husks then they would have to kiss a girl! Eli picked up a husk and the poeple said, Kiss a girl! Kiss a girl! Eli turnd a round and kissed a boy! The poeple laughed! Eli hung his head, then kissed a girl. The poeple said, He likes girls and boys! Then they laughed again, Then Eli laughed.Chapter 4:&amp;nbsp; Eli and MoseasdfChapter 5: Eli's School Days It was Eli's first day of school and Eli didn't want to go to school. He wanted to stay home and make the twelve brooms so he could trade them for a jackknife.&amp;nbsp; But he had to go to school with his sister.&amp;nbsp; When he got to school, he told his teacher his name and then sat down.&amp;nbsp; He crossed his arms because he didn't like school and the teacher smacked him with a ruler.&amp;nbsp; The teacher said there would be no recess for everybody.&amp;nbsp;
