xx Surgery

Okay, I'm going to give it to you plain & simple.

A month ago my dear muffer took me to the doctor for a well check. I got two shots & an ouchie blood-sticker-shottie-thingy-in-the-finger-ouch. They found out that I have Scoliosis. I didn't tell you about it then because 1. I only thought I'd have to wear a brace. 2. I ferdot. 3. I wuz BUSEH!

But, I don't have to wear a brace! (I know what you're thinkin': YAY!)
Um, not yay? I'm going to have to have surgery. It's going to be in around a month or so, depending on when the two surgeony-types can coordinate their schedules.

It's a four hour surgery, involving putting rods in my back, the size of pencils or sommat. I'll be in Intensive Care for the night (Friday night, 'cos that's when they do surgeries) so I can have my own nurse. (I feel loved!) I'll be in the hospital for a week & won't be able to pick up anything that weighs over five pounds for SIX MONTHS. (How will I live?!)

The hospital is going to have a cable TV & a radio & all my friends are gonna visit & -- WHHEEE!

Anyhow, just wanted to drop that by you and let you know that I won't be on for at least a week, probably more than that. I'll let you know the date when I know. If you are so inclined (in other words, please do) pray that everything will go smoothly.

Okay, I love books. LOVE. Right now, I'm chewing my was through Jane Eyre and The Fellowship of the Ring. Right now, I think Jane is more interesting. Pro'lly comes from seeing the movies before the books {In Fellowship's case, anyhow.} That is a no-no. *Reminds self never to do it again.* It's pretty good so far.
I read the things about Charlotte first, the author of Jane. And seriously, that history thing right there almost set me off. *sniffle* Her two older sisters died within a few days? Then later on the rest of her siblings died, within a few months of each other? *bawls* That there, my friend, is ... really sad.
Lighter, brighter topic, though, shall we?

Okay, yesterday, since we didn't have a PM service at church, me and my siblings/mom roamed our 100 acre wood. {Okay, it's only 5, but still... I CALL BEING EYE-ORE!} We goofed off in the creek, caught some frogs, stepped in a swamp, made a dam {Watch yer language, son.}... And it was fun! Okay, so then we came back, killed a buncha ants {with ant killer, mind.} and goofed of. All good. 'K, so then I took my slip-on shoes off {which had gotten filthy} and.... my feet were blue! {"Violet! You're turning violet!} It was from the died leather of the crummy shoes. Hand-me-downs from my "best" friend. Not my fault, I tell you.

This stupid computer just won't understand will it? Okay, I'm trying to tinker with my practice blog's template, the other one, not this one. Okay, so I go where I'm supposed to go, click where I'm supposed to click, tinker with colors, banners, blinkies, lettering, the normal stuff. Okay, then I save it, go and look at it.... Turns out, the blanking thing saved it for THIS blog! So, I'm venting on my sister. She deserves it anyway. Now, I'm having to dig out that pretty template Nimrodel made for me, and fix the blanking things. And every time I fix it: it ends up doing it AGAIN. *mutters incoherently* I'm lucky if this post doesn't end up on the practice one too.

Cab Ride

When I arrived at 2:30 a.m., the building was dark except for a single
light in a ground floor window.

Under these circumstances, many drivers would just honk once or twice,
wait a minute, and then drive away.

But I had seen too many impoverished people who depended on taxis as
their only means of transportation. Unless a situation smelled of
danger, I always went to the door. This passenger might be someone who
needs my assistance, I reasoned to myself.

So I walked to the door and knocked. "Just a minute", answered a frail,
elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor.

After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90's stood
before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil
pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940s movie.

By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no
one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with
sheets.

There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the
counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and
glassware.

"Would you carry my bag out to the car?" she said. I took the suitcase
to the cab, then returned to assist the woman.

She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing", I told her. "I
just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated".

"Oh, you're such a good boy", she said. When we got in the cab, she gave
me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"

"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.

"Oh, I don't mind," she said. "I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a
hospice".

I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. "I don't
have any family left," she continued. "The doctor says I don't have very
long." I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.

"What route would you like me to take?" I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the
building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.

We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived
when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture
warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a
girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or
corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said,
"I'm tired. Let's go now"

We drove in silence to the address she had given me.It was a low
building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed
under a portico.

Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were
solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been
expecting her.

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman
was already seated in a wheelchair.

"How much do I owe you?" she asked, reaching into her purse.

"Nothing," I said

"You have to make a living," she answered.

"There are other passengers," I responded.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me
tightly.

"You gave an old woman a little moment of joy," she said.

"Thank you."

I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light. Behind
me, a door shutIt was the sound of the closing of a life.

I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost
in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that
woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his
shift?

What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven
away?

On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more
important in my life.

We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments.

But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what
others may consider a small one.

PEOPLE MAY NOT REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID, OR WHAT YOU SAID,
~BUT~THEY WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL.

You won't get any big surprise in 10 days if you send this to ten
people.

But, you might help make the world a little kinder and more
compassionate by sending it on.

Knocking at the Door

Well, I have been very, overly, utterly busy. But now, I am taking a break from my {not-so} frantic life, to answer the Poetess' question. :D:D:D::DD mmm hmmm What have you been up to?
Well, I have been very busy. There, that good? No Okay, fine. I've been working on cramming the proper way to write a paragraph in my head. I'm learning that at our co-op. I got Composition {AKA Paragraph 101}, History, Astronomy {AKA StuffIAlreadyKnowWellMostly, and then lastly, but not leastly, Literature. I like Lit. We're going to make dioramas tomorrow. Then after that, tie-dyed shirts. Shuweeet.
I'm trying to think of what to chat about next.... Neverland! Naw, that'd make me sound stupid/childish. And I'm almost thirteen! Well, in *counts on fingers* *Yes really, counts on fingers.* *takes forever, due to surfing on LORA* 7-ish months. I am SO looking forward to it. Now, I don't normally have birthday parties, so my mother says I can have one. With 6 guests! That is something unheard of in the ------ household. There is also a slight possibility that I can get my ears pierced. Also, unheard of.
There's a reason I can get my ears pierced as well. I am now the proud owner of --long drumroll -- a pair of blue/silver earrings. A present from a friend who hasn't noticed (!) -- shame, shame -- that I don't have pierced ears.

I said I owed y'all an explanation didn't I? Yep. Thought so. Well, why I haven't been active like a should be.
*coughy-choke* Ahem.

1. We. Moved. To a house in _____________, SC. {Bwa, I would never give you my city!} It has 5 acres, on which is a creek, a ravine, huge tree stumps, scrubby pines, cool climbing trees, and a "forest". The house {which I will give you a picture of, as soon as we get them put on disc} is a two-story, white cape cod. I have to share a room with my annoying little sister, Sudie. {*incoherant mumble*} And the worst thing is:
She got this Barbie lamp for Christmas, and it has an actual DANCING ballerina on it, and it PLAYS this totally ANNOYING sappy orchestra music that makes me want to HURL. Did I mention she plays it EVERY chance she gets, until I threaten to knock her block off? It's .... REALLY annoying.... But, I could have to share it with my little 2 year old sister, Charlotte, who's conversation with me went like this earlier:
