A question...

Hey All!

This was an assignment for school, and my sis did it too, if you are interested in her ideas on the subject. My Mom got the idea from Dr. Veith's blog where he asked the same question.

Anyway....the idea is to say who the most influential characters (fictional, from TV, Books and Movies) are in your life. Good and Bad. And you also need to tell me why...please...

Good:

Anakin Skywalker: I know that most of you hate (or severely disklike) Hayden Christensen's performance in Episode 2 and 3 of Star Wars (I don't, but that's just me). Some of you have read the books (kudos to you!) and have gathered a better, deeper understanding of Anakin as Anakin, and not HC. Anakin was always meant to symbolize the struggle between good and evil. As an admitted Christian, I find it very easy to relate to him. He struggles to follow the rules, do the right thing, and just generally be a good person. As Anakin, he has a distinct sense of morals, such as kindness, trust, truth, determination, perseverance, true love, logic, peacemaking, not afraid to defy the rules when they are wrong, selflessness etc. And while he is still a sinner, he is allowing the force the use him for good purposes. As Darth Vader, he is a dark, distant sinner. Anakin is a perfect example of what we as humans go through everyday. We struggle to do right, or to fall into sin. Sometimes we do the right thing, but most of the time we are blind to the truth, and sin. Anakin falls into sin, but he, after some time, is able to see his mistake, and then tries to correct it. But he can't do it alone, it takes other people and the all mysterious force to influence him to the right decision. This is a play on how other believers influence our faith, as well as the role that the Holy Spirit has on us, to guide to the right choice. It's also a description of the sinner/saint that is within us all.

Frodo Baggins: Frodo starts out as a humble, innocent hobbit, then through extraordinary circumstances must save Middle Earth. There are many connections between Frodo and many apostles or saints (such as Perpetua, James, and Peter) He constantly doubts himself, which is a show of his constant humbleness. He, like Anakin, struggles to destroy the Ring, or succumb to it. Just like Anakin, he doesn't do it alone. He has Sam, and Gandalf. It takes a strong character to actually do the right thing, because everyone can be shown the path, but many do not follow it.

Samwise Gamgee: Arguably the best sidekick of all time, Sam strengthens not only those around him, but finds that by doing that, it strengthens him. Humans were always meant to rely on each other for encouragement. Sam is the perfect example of humbleness and perseverance. He is quite content to not be in the spotlight, and to advise others, but only when they ask for it. He is encouraging, and never gives up.

Peregrin Took: An influence of a different kind, Peregrin shows the transformation from child to adult. He doesn't necesarily WANT to grow up, but he must. This is a trail that everyone will face in time. If you follow Pippin's journey, he starts out as a rather childish, distant and unrealistic chap. He ends up as a serious (but not too serious), responsible man...er...hobbit. He finds the perfect balance of seriousness and fun.

Pschye: From C.S. Lewis' Til We Have Faces, Pschye is a girl who was not blessed with beauty. She finds that it is hard to go through life with her ugliness displayed on the outside. So many people she encounters are superficial, and will not talk to her simply because she is not "beautiful" on the outside. But she has character, something her beautiful sister lacks. Though she is not well favored, she is patient, and when she dies, she is shown for her true beauty. Inside and out.

Jean Valjean: He, unlike any other characters here, starts out bad, and turns to good. This shows that even the farthest fallen soul can be redeemed.

Unfortunately, there are more bad characters than good. I have two categories, Sarcastic, and just Plain Bad.

So....Sarcastic

Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Indiana Jones, Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth Bennet, Elizabeth Swann, Mr. Rochester, Scarlett O'Hara, Rhett Butler and Archie Bunker. All of these characters are sarcastic, sardonic, and just plain rude. They are blinded by greed, their wants and needs, and they are consumed by themselves.The only one of these characters that improves is Obi-Wan. While their quips might be humorous, one wonders if they feel anything at all. They take sarcasm to a level it shouldn't be taken to, and they are perfect showcases of the depravity of man, not to mention their egos are about the size of the Millenium Falcon.

And just plain evil...

Darth Vader, Darth Sidious, The Phantom of the Opera, Captain Barbossa, Davy Jones, Baron Rodolphe de Gortz, and Captain Nemo. There is simply nothing good about any of these characters. They only bring you down. They have no good quailities, and like the previous catagory, they are self focused. (If you've ever read the book The Phantom of the Opera, he's no good..at least he tried to redeem himself in the movie.) There is nothing redeeming or rewarding about these characters.

Flight 93

I watched this movie last week. It made me sick. It made me want to stand up and scream at all those liberals and anyone who is against the War On Terror. We need to be in Iraq. For the intelligence, for the freedom of those under tyranny, and to defeat those disgusting terrorists who want to murder innocent people, not just us, but anyone who doesn't agree with them.

It drives me crazy when people say that just because more people have died this year in Iraq, the war is not going well. The difference is the quality of life. When you look at the life Iraqi's have now, compared to what they had under Saddam...there's just no possible way ANYONE can say that we haven't improved their life over there.

Some people say that we never should have gone to Iraq in the first place. We did go in on faulty intel from the UN, but once that info was proven false, were we just supposed to withdraw and say, "Sorry, we won't help you. It doesn't matter that you are under a murderous dicatoriship. It doesn't matter that your people are thrown into paper shreders just because they said one wrong thing. We're just gonna leave and wait for another 9/11 to happen."

Those who don't support the war don't support our country. Our country was founded on freedom from tyranny. The Iraqi's might not have asked for our help, but they needed it. And we needed the intel.

Those who don't support the war say that all the people lost on 9/11 don't matter. The people in Flight 93 sacrificed EVERYTHING. They sacfriced their lives, and their families. They gave their lives for ours. And there is no bigger sacrifice than that. That is what our troops are doing over in Iraq. They are sacrificing everything to keep us safe.

Watch this movie. This is patriotism at its finest. We will never forget you, Flight 93.

Rock the Boat!

Okay, so a while ago I acquired a xanga and have been mainly posting on that (the thing below is a post from it). Sorry. Also in the process of moving, so posts will be more sparatic than usual.

Don�t Rock the Boat!

How many times have you heard this phrase?

Has is ever stuck with you? Does it matter to you in your everyday life?

It never mattered to me until recently, Sunday in fact. Pastor Lucido (filling in for our Pastor Kirkeide, who�s on vacation), gave a sermon on rocking the boat, using the example of the prophet Amos, who rocked Israel�s boat of contentment with being just like pagan countries. I never realized until yesterday that our faith really rocks the boat. The boat of secularity. Our boat of contentment.

Many people find our faith offensive. That�s fine, they can have their opinion, but the thing that really gets me is that they say, "how dare you interrupt our perfect (haha) society with your revolting ideas!" While they shove their skimpy clothes, promiscuous, feministic, gay accepting, mass murdering (abortion), un-American worldview down our throats. "You�d better accept it," they say. "How dare you rock the boat!" and "Majority = Acceptable."

Okay. Rewind! Before you ask me how dare WE rock the boat, let�s take a look at society two hundred, even one hundred years ago. You�d be rocking the boat, not me.

And don�t tell me that women were forced to be docile, barefoot-and-pregnant-in-the-kitchen, subservient wives. Women played a major role in society and in fact, throughout history, many women have made a mark in history (a good mark, mind you, not like your feminist crazyheads today), such as Clara Barton, Marie Curie, and Dolly Madison.

And don�t give me your crap about women�s choice in murdering their unborn child. (If it�s not alive, as you all claim, then why do you have to kill it?)

Don�t get me started on discrimination of gays. You just don�t wanna go there.

Having a majority in something does not make that thing acceptable. If a majority of Americans were murderers, does that make murdering acceptable? If a majority of Americans were abusive, does that make abuse okay? Majority cannot equal acceptability, because if something is wrong, it's wrong. No shading the truth. (My little LD part of this post )

In short, you can have your opinions, but you have to let me have mine. And I�ll rock the boat as much as I want. (Ever considered that you might be rocking my boat?) No more docility in this Lutheran. You won�t brainwash me, I�m not content with and won�t accept your pagan beliefs and you can�t shake me with whatever you throw at me. I know what I believe. I know it will save me. Can you say the same about your beliefs?

So rock the boat, fellow Children of God. Dare to be different. (Like Martin Luther! ) Dare to defy sin and secularity. (And for my fellow Lutherans, Dare to be Lutheran!)

I double-dog dare you to!

Munich

A new post! Finally! But, life's been crazy. SO....don't be too mad...

Three days ago I watched Munich (rated R for violence, language, nudity and sexual content). It was so different than I thought it would be. From what WORLD and nearly everyone else said, I thought it was a terrorist sympathizer movie. But I was wrong. So wrong. The movie is about change. The realization that the things that you believe in so strongly just might be wrong. The realization that revenge is wrong. The realization that you can't play God.

Judaism is supposedly a peaceful religion. Israel never negotiates with terrorists. They just take revenge on those terrorists. Murdering in cold blood isn't peaceful. Revenge on terrorists is the premise of the movie. In 1972, at the Munich Olympics, 11 Arabic terrorists killed the entire Israeli Olympic team. The movie is about Israelis killing the 11 Arabic terrorists, not about the Munich massacre (another misconception I had). This movie creeped me out, because of the joy and glee both the Arabians and Israelis took in murdering each other. In the end, the main character (played by Eric Bana) learns that revenge is wrong, that murdering is wrong, and that he is no different than a terrorist when he murders them. He turns his back on his country. Steven Spielberg is Jewish. I honestly think that he had A LOT of guts to do this movie. He is raising questions about his religion that makes one doubt the patriotism that masquerades as terrorism. He doesn't take a stance on it either way, but he raises the question.

Personally, I think this movie was really good, I would highly recommend it. There were a two sex scenes that should have been taken out, they didn't add to the movie, but the rest of the movie was amazing. (And the music is by John Williams, yay!!! )

Battle of the Mind

Yeah, yeah, I know. I�m a very bad blogger. SO SUE ME! What you could possibly sue me for I have no idea, except suing me for intentional infliction of emotional distress on the account of your personal online blogging experience, negligent infliction of emotional distress on the account of your personal online blogging experience, the tort of outrage, mental anguish (that one�s dedicated to Boomer), or just the loss of a good blogging experience (I�m really NOT egotistical�). Other than that, no idea! If you DO decide to sue me for any or all of the above, all I have to say is good luck finding an attorney that will represent you!

But, as fun as that was, that�s not the reason for this post. I�m a participant in the NCFCA (National Christian Forensics and Communications Association, for more info see www.ncfca.org). I participate in Lincoln Douglas VALUES debate. This year I also participated in two speech events, Duo Interpretation (a 10 minute interpretation from literature with a partner, my partner and I did The Tortoise and the Hare from Politically Correct Bedtime Stories) and an Original Oratory. An original oratory is pretty simple, just a 10 minute speech on anything you like. It could be on peanut butter if you wanted. Anyway, I wrote mine on the �Battle of the Mind.� I am including it below. I liked giving the speech, and I enjoyed writing it. Please comment. Do you agree with it? Disagree? Let me know!!!

I am biased. You are biased. There is no way around it. You have a personal philosophy, a personal set of beliefs that were either instilled in you from childhood, or ones you chose for yourself later on. No matter how hard you try, you will never escape from your biases, in any situation. Even if you look at something with an �open mind�, your mind is already partially closed, because of what you already believe, and the unwillingness to change your belief.

The thesis statement of this speech is, �You are what you believe.� What you believe and what you do with what you believe shows your true self. It also tells others where you stand in the battle of the mind.

Okay. So. This is great, you think. So now, we know that we cannot ever escape our biases, nor can we ever look at a situation with complete objectivity and what we believe shows our true self. So�now what?

Two things, actually.

(1) We need to be mindful of the biases of others.

(2) Logic is dangerous when it puts your faith at risk.

Now, I bet the second thing really has you cocking your eyebrows. Just wait though, you�ll see what I mean.

Okay, now we can get into the first point.

We need to be mindful of the biases of others.

Okay, first question. Why do we care about others� biases? Such as�why does Angelina Jolie�s opinion matter? Or Ted Kennedy�s? Or Larry King�s?

Two reasons. (1) They influence the weaker-minded. (2) They push society towards a Platonic worldview. More about that Platonic worldview later. Let me show you the impact these people have on the weaker-minded.

Mind you, a two-year-old is not going to be watching C-SPAN and listening to Ted Kennedy ramble, but the effects Kennedy has on those who already follow his ideas will influence that two-year-old. For their benefit? No. To their detriment? YES!!!!!!!! This ties into the Platonic worldview, but, like I said, more on that later.

Okay�why do Angelina Jolie�s and Larry King�s opinions/biases matter? They are big names in Hollywood. They are starring/reporting in the movies, the television, and the media you watch. Even if YOU don�t watch them�others are. And that is where the danger lies. The influence these people are having on those who do watch them is tremendous and you should be entirely terrified of the influence they are having. Paul said in Romans 16:18b that �smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.� This has to do with a Platonic worldview.

I am going to give a little background on what a Platonic worldview is and where it came from before I link it to this point.

(NOTE: For the purposes of this exposition this encounter is muchly exaggerated)

Aristotle, a pupil of the philosopher Plato, is going to visit Plato. It�s a nice sunny day in Athens. Aristotle is walking down in the road in a toga, shining in all his Ancient Greek glory. He soon reaches his teacher�s house.

Aristotle: Yo, teach! It�s me, your student!

Plato: Oh, not again�Aristotle, my boy! Won�t you come in?

Aristotle: Okay, so, I want to know what it is exactly that you believe.

Plato: Isn�t that what I�ve spent my whole time teaching you?

Aristotle: Nope. You�ve taught me what philosophy is, how to teach philosophy to others, yada, yada. Just give me a thirty-second blurb.

Plato: On?

Aristotle: On government I guess.

Plato: Well, the government should control everything. They are the smart ones, after all. What I mean, is, they are of a higher intellect than an everyday citizen. The government should be like the conductor of an orchestra. You lose government, you lose everything. The citizens are the players. You lose one of them�big deal!

Aristotle:) Eh, not bad, 29.2 seconds. But, what�s with the conductor government? I mean, I don�t mind them conducting business, politics and stuff, but they shouldn�t control everything! And since when did I become some trombone that no one cares about if I get lost? I�m not a servant to the government, no one should be!

Plato: HOW DARE YOU UNDERMINE MY AUTHORITY! I WORK AND I SLAVE TO TEACH YOU AND YOU STILL DON�T GET IT! YOU CANNOT HAVE YOUR OWN PHILOSOPHY!!!!!! MINE IS SUPREME!!!!!!

Aristotle: Well, who died and made you the Queen of Sheba? I am most certainly entitled to my own opinion/philosophy/bias!

Plato: You�ll never amount to anything! Be gone, you rebel!

Okay. Now that that�s done�let me do a quick recap.

Plato is total government control, since they are smarter, citizens servants to government.

Aristotle is limited government, each citizen an individual, who should take care of themselves first and then the government.

So in the future, when I refer to a Platonic worldview, that�s what I�m talking about.

Okay�now I�m going to link.

The Platonic influence people like Ted Kennedy, Angelina Jolie, and Larry King give to the world leads the weaker minded into submission. We need to have the opinion of Aristotle! We have to understand that if we don�t, we are going to be put into a Platonic government.

The most apparent example of this is the Muslim religon. In Muslim countries, illiteracy is the norm, there are hardly any computers, and many are killed simply because they are non-Muslim, or simply because they have a different idea of things than the government does.

This is the ultimate Platonic society. Each citizen in a Muslim country is a servant of the government. They do what they are told, when they are told. They believe what they are ordered to believe. New ideas are suppressed. Their society is backward.

This is what Platonic�s are pushing us towards.

This is why we must watch, and care about the worldview of others. Or we will end up in a Platonic society.

And thus, you see, the War on Terror, which all those Platonic�s are against, I might add, really comes down to the Battle of the Ideas�the Battle of the Mind.

Now onto my second point.

Logic is dangerous when it puts your faith at risk.

Now, to prove this to you, I am going to pose the popular question�.

What hath Athens to do with Jerusalem?

Let me put some terms into place first.

Athens = Sola Logos (Logic alone)

Basic Philosophy = Humans are able to understand everything, through logic and human reason. If it cannot be explained, it does not exist.

Jerusalem = Sola Scriptora (Scripture alone)

Basic Philosophy = Humans have faith that God is the creator of the world, that Jesus is the Savior of all, and that the Holy Spirit works in the heart to create faith, as well as other beliefs the Bible confesses. It is not humanly possible to understand how all the processes of God work.

Now that terms are in place, let me move to a major point.

We cannot possibly understand everything. Why? If we had all the answers, we would not have questions. Having all the answers, we could explain everything, there would be no need for a Savior, or a God at all, and questions would not exist. After all, we understand everything with a humanist worldview. However, we do know that there are questions. This leaves room for faith. So faith can exist.

Now, for an actual answer to the question, �what hath Athens to with Jerusalem?�

Humanism and Christianity cannot be merged.

You cannot value human logic and reason over Scripture. When you start merging human logic with the Word, you are allowing (a) doubt into faith and (b) agreeing that the humanistic worldview is better, because you have to be able to explain what cannot be explained.

I�m not saying that logic doesn�t have its place in Scripture, but you cannot explain everything in Scripture. Some things you just have to take on faith. Let me provide an example of this.

Okay�let�s look at a popular debate currently going on, Creation vs. Evolution. God says in Genesis that He created the world in six literal days. Many hold the belief that God could have used evolution to create the world. This is true in a way, God COULD have used evolution, but He didn�t. They back up this argument with a popular Bible verse that says a day is like a thousand years to the Lord. Here�s the thing, they�ve tried to mix human logic and reason with Scripture. They are, however, taking the verse grossly out of context, and trying to disprove the Bible. This may not be their intention, but this is what they are doing. As you can see, when you use logic over Scripture, you are taking yourself down a dangerous path.

Now, logic can be good, however, if you use logic to make sound arguments, to connect your faith more closely to the Bible (for instance, if you use logic to show that Creation is six literal days. I just did.), etc. It really comes down to values and application. Thus, the answer becomes, what do you value more? Sola Logos or Sola Scriptora?

Now to close, I would like to talk about VALUES and their APPLICATION and how they matter. This is a huge part of the battle of the mind. The way you apply your values will express a lot to people. This is part of how to deal with the aforementioned �Athens�.

Okay. Now let me say that you must first decide what it is you VALUE. Create a little list in your mind of what you value and how much you value it. For instance, I value truth more than justice. Now the reasoning behind this is that if you do not have the truth, you cannot have justice; because you will not know what is true and then can�t decide what is just. (See, this is me using logic in a good way!)

Okay, now that you�ve got that list, you�ve got to work on APPLICATION. (This will show how good you�re using that logic!) Just because you value something doesn�t mean you apply it. This is important to understand. Please use your values wisely. Application of values in your life, how you apply and use them is essential to winning the battle of the mind.

For illustration, we have to love our opponents in the battle of the mind. We need to pray for them, pray that they find the truth. Showing them that application of mercy will be crucial. However, we cannot always be merciful. We have to show some tough love too, show them that we will not tolerate their brainwashing techniques and theories of world dominance. This is just an example, there are many things we can and should do in the battle of the mind.

But, the first step is to GET INVOLVED! When you do not, you are doing exactly what the Platonians want! We are ignoring the problem, and believe me, that will not make it go away.

Don�t let the Platonians win!

So, now go out, therefore�and choose for yourself, judge�what will you do?

Little Statues

I know what y'all are thinking.

FINALLY ANOTHER

BLOG POST!

All right, maybe not, but I agree that it is high time to talk about something other than "what world leader are you?". So with that, I give you... (insert apropo "dun, dun, dun".)... little statues. By me! (Wow, ain't that the shock and surprise of the century?)

I am so stinking tired of watching (I don�t watch all of the award ceremonies, but I keep up on them�) sick, twisted, completely liberal movies take the little golden statues at award ceremonies.

Let's just look at this year's Golden Globes winners. I personally didn't watch them, but I read about them. 4 little globes for Brokeback Mountain. 2 little globes for best actor and actress in gay/sex change promoting movies. (The movies were Capote and TransAmerica) Can you believe that? It is just substandard! Are those the standards we are holding "good" movies to?

I know that liberal agenda movies don�t always take the little golden men/globes/whatever. 2003 was a good year for all us Tolkein fanatics (well�I�m not a fanatic, but still a good year.). But I think it happens too often. What do y�all think?

I say we overhaul the current system and let the people decide. NOT THE ACTORS. Aren�t we the people they are supposed to be entertaining? Aren�t we the reason they have a JOB? I say we show those narcissistic, bloated-ego pizanos (granted not all of them are crazy) what real movies are.
