BairFoot Days - Homeschool Blogger

I'm Esther. I'm 15 and I live on a small hobby farm with my Dad and Mom and three younger brothers. I love doing things the old way and am trying to help my family be more dependent on the land than going to a store to get things. I go to a Brethren church and am very strong in my beliefs. If you post a comment I will try and comment back as soon as possible but I will comment on my blog not yours. Just a little heads up. Enjoy!

Gabriel and Mary

Mary amazes me. A Jewish young woman that took the responsibility of giving birth to our Christ and Saviour. All she said was, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." I know I would be asking lots of questions and wondering why I was the chosen one.

Luke 1: 26-38 KJV
26 And in the sixth moth the angel Garbriel was sent from the God unto a city of Glilee, named Nazareth,
27To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28And the angel came in unto her, and said "Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women."
29And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30And the angel said unto her, "Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31'And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32'He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33'And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end."
34Then said Mary unto the angel, "How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?"
35And the angel answered and said unto her, "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
36'And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37'For with God nothing shall be impossible."
38And Mary said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." And the angel departed from her.

Again for these verses I found other verses related to them. For Luke 1:27, I found Matthew 1:18

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before the came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

For Luke 1:31, I found Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

For Luke 1:33, I found Mathew 14:33

Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

For Luke 1:37, I found Matthew 19:26

But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, "With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible."

Gentle Mary Laid Her Child

Gentle Mary laid her Child lowly in a manger
There He lay, the undefiled, to the world a Stranger:
Such a Babe in such a place, can He be the Savior?
Ask the saved of all the race who have found His favor.

Angels sang about His birth; wise men sought and found Him;
Heaven’s star shone brightly forth, glory all around Him:
Shepherds saw the wondrous sight, heard the angels singing;
All the plains were lit that night, all the hills were ringing.

Gentle Mary laid her Child lowly in a manger;
He is still the undefiled, but no more a stranger:
Son of God, of humble birth, beautiful the story;
Praise His Name in all the earth, hail the King of glory!

The Sign of Immanuel

I thought it would be neat to do some Christmas posts leading up to Christ's birth. At church right now we are doing a group of sermons called "Christmas with Isaiah." We are studying the prophet Isaiah's prophesy of Christ's birth.
The first section of verses I chose is Isaiah 7:14-16. One thing I noticed here, was in the Old Testament, Immanuel is spelled this way but in the New Testament it is spelled, Emmanuel. Emmanuel means "God with us."

Isaiah 7:14-16 NKJV

14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
15 Curds and honey He shall eat, that he may know to refuse the evil and choose the good.
16 For before the Child shall know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land that you dread will be forsaken by both her kings

For verse 14, I also found Matthew 1:22-23
22Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
23"Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."

Also for verse 14, Isaiah 9:6-7
6For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end.
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

For Isaiah 7:16, I found Isaiah 8:4
4For before the child shall have knowledge to cry "My father" and "My mother," the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be taken away before the king of Assyria.

O come, O come, Emmanuel,

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
and ransom captive Israel,
that mourns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.

Refrain:
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free
thine own from Satan's tyranny;
from depths of hell thy people save,
and give them victory over the grave.
Refrain

O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer
our spirits by thine advent here;
disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
and death's dark shadows put to flight.
Refrain

O come, thou Key of David, come,
and open wide our heavenly home;
make safe the way that leads on high,
and close the path to misery.
Refrain

Pumpkin Bread

I got this recipe from the Better Homes and Gardens website. This bread is very moist and delicious!

Ingredients
3 cups sugar
1 cup cooking oil (I use melted butter or you could use half melted butter and half oil)
4 eggs
3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
Pinch of cloves
2/3 cup water
1 15-ounce pumpkin

1. Grease two bread pans (9x5x3-inch); set aside. In a large bowl, beat oil and sugar on medium speed (I prefer mixing stuff by hand so I just mixed it until it was well combined). Add eggs and beat well; set aside.

2. In another large bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Add flour mixture and water alternately to the sugar mixture; mixing well after each addition. Beat in pumpkin. Spoon into pans.

3. Bake in 350* oven for 55-65 minutes or until a wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes. Let the loaves finish cooling on wire racks. Enjoy!

Come, Ye Thankful People, Come

This week, for church, one of the hymns I am playing is Come, Ye Thankful People, Come. It's perfect for Thanksgiving. Words written by Henry Alford and music by George J. Elvey in 1844.

Come, ye thankful people, come, raise the song of harvest home;
All is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin.
God our Maker doth provide for our wants to be supplied;
Come to God’s own temple, come, raise the song of harvest home.

All the world is God’s own field, fruit unto His praise to yield;
Wheat and tares together sown unto joy or sorrow grown.
First the blade and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear;
Lord of harvest, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be.

For the Lord our God shall come, and shall take His harvest home;
From His field shall in that day all offenses purge away,
Giving angels charge at last in the fire the tares to cast;
But the fruitful ears to store in His garner evermore.

Even so, Lord, quickly come, bring Thy final harvest home;
Gather Thou Thy people in, free from sorrow, free from sin,
There, forever purified, in Thy garner to abide;
Come, with all Thine angels come, raise the glorious harvest home.
