Do I have to turn in my conservative card

I am about to write something that I am afraid will make me have to turn in my conservative card, so to speak, but before you label me crazy or a liberal, hear me all the way through.

I read this morning on the Fox News website about how, with Bush out of office, lots of critics would like to pull abstinance education. (You can read the article for yourself here.) Well, I agree. That's right, I agree with a bunch of liberals. Wait, wait, don't click past me, hear me all the way through.

First of all s*x education of any kind doesn't belong in the schools. It isn't any, and I mean ANY school teacher's job to teach children anything about the birds and the bees. That doesn't belong in school, even if it is abstainance education. It isn't their job!!!! I am oppossed to ANY and all s*x education in schools. I know, "but since they are going to do it anyway, they should at least teach the right thing." Sorry, but that argument sounds a lot like why we should practice safe s*x that is oppossed by those who teach abstinance. HMMMMM.

Secondly, acording to the article, the results haven't been very good. Now, there is a lot of debate about the results of abstinance education, with each side claiming victory. You can make the stats read either way, but I will be perfectly honest and say that if it is true that it isn't working, I AM NOT SURPISED!!!!!

We are trying to teach children, in a Godless environment, to do something difficult (practice self control), for no apparent reason. We can't tell them that an all powerful, all loving God wants something better for them. All we can tell them is "no-no". We can throw stats at them, but even in statistics, there are exceptions, and what makes our kids think they won't be the exception? Nothing, especially since they are very, very "special" as they have learned in their positive thinking, good self esteem courses. We can't give them a why, we can't give them something bigger, we can't give them hope, all we can do is tell them, "You can't have fun until you are married." And every teenage boy and lots of the girls know that fun ends when you get married right?

So, without God, it is pointless to teach abstinance, with God, this would be done by the parents or the person Biblically put in charge of the child's soul. So, that's why I am opposed to abstinance education, especially with government money in the schools.

Now, can I still keep my conservative card?

Exicted about the election

Yes, you read that right. I am excited about the outcome of the Presidential election. Why? Well, let me tell you

"And he changeth the times and the seasons; He removeth kings, and setteth up kings; he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding. He revealeth the deep and secret things; he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him." ( Dn 2: 20-22 )

God is Sovereign and know what He is doing.

Even if this election causes major problems for Christians, God works everything for good to those who are called. He will work this to His honor and HIs glory. God loves His people enough and is trustworthy enough that we can trust Him and know He is working for our good, even in a bad situation

We have elected the first black man as president. Remember that Martin Luther King JR was suspected to be a communist sympathizer and was a known adulterer. Yet, God used him to help bring about some good things for this country. Could't God do that with the current situation?

I pray it will become clear how morally bankrupt this way of thinking is. (Mind you, the current Republican party isn't a lot better), because actions have consequences.

I, just like a lot of others, in my humanness, wish things had turned out differently, but I know this will be an exciting time for our country. I am not going to be down about this, but am going to rejoice, not that someone did or did not get elected, but that I have my trust in God, not in some man in an office in a city on the East Coast.

Socialism

I don't know if you have heard, but Barak Obama is advocating that people take the day off on Tuesday (election day), and help his campaign by knocking doors, getting out the vote and making calls. He says you can't make history sitting at your desk. HMMMMM. Let me see if I have this right.

Mr. Obama is asking me to take my earned time off, vacation, inconvenience my company who pays me to do a job, and give it to him as a part of a government function, that is to get him elected as President. Sounds like redistribution to me. I admit this isn't forced, yet, but someone please explain to me how this very concept, taking my time and giving it to the government, isn't Socialism.

What will change

I was thinking about something the other day, and I thought I would share it with you. Now, before you think I have something profound, it's not, it's just something I was thinking about.

I have a terrible singing voice. I'm not saying that to be modest, I really do. I can't sing worth anything. I remember once even overhearing a conversation between some folks at church about why the singing was very good one particular Sunday, and someone said, "Well, Shane was singing kind of loud, that could be part of it." Everyone agreed. I'm telling you, I can't sing well. I love to sing. I like to sing loud (when I am alone), but when I am in public, I sing very, very quietly so as not to disturb other's worship. I have always joked about it, and always said that someday when I get to heaven I will have a beautiful singing voice. Well, what if that's not true.

I know that when we get to heaven, we will be made perfect, handicaps will be gone, the lame will walk, the bind see, the deaf hear, etc, but those are physical ailments brought about by the curse. My voice isn't something wrong with me, it's just who I am. It's a part of me. I wonder if up in heaven, it won't be that my voice will be made better, but instead my warped view will be made better. In other words, I won't be bothered by having an off key voice, and those around me won't be bothered by my voice, because we will all be so busy praising God that whether I am on key or not will not even be a thought.

Then, I thought of other applications to this. Maybe those who are shy won't be cured of their shyness, but wil be so focused on Christ that it won't matter. Maybe those of us who are naturally loud won't be suddenly made meek and mild, but our loudness will be used to praise our Father. Maybe people who can't focus won't suddenly be able to focus, but will be able to praise the Father in multiple ways at once. I don't know, and I am sure not saying anything definate, and as I said, I am not saying anything about true physical handicaps. I guess what I am saying is maybe the problem isn't with something to change physically, but something to change spiritually. Maybe I need to accept that I don't have a singing voice, but it doesn't matter, but I need to praise. I need to praise, not in spite of my bad singing voice, but because of it, for God made my voice exactly as it as, and He commanded me to praise. Worse, am I insulting God by my excuse. He made my voice, just as it is, He told me to praise, and I tell Him that it's not good enough. Kind of makes you wonder, huh?

A story

Coming back from my haitus, I thought I would shar a story with you.

It's early one morning, 6:00 to be exact, and we find John reaching over to hit the off button on his alarm clock. UGH! Another day. He staggers into his living room and pushed the button on his remote to turn on the TV. It has been much nicer watching TV with his new Digital Converter box that he only had to pay $10 for since the government gave him a $40 voucher. He turned it on just in time to catch the weather. He was really glad that he did, because the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service were predicting storms that day. He needed to be ready.

After his hot shower (he loved his shower now, buecause he bought one of thoese instant hot water systems and even got a rebate back from the governement because he was saving water), he got dressed and went for some breakfast. He reached into the refrigerator and grabbed the milk. WIC was a big help, especially since milk was now almost $4.00 a gallon. However, as he thought about it, $4 wasn't so bad, after all, the government had to ensure that the dairy farmers made a good living too. .

Soon everyone in the family was up, and he was going to have to leave for work. He helped his children get dressed, argued with his children about what they were going to wear, gave them the same milk and cereal, paid for by WIC, that he had, and sent them out the door to the bus stop. One, Two, Three, the third wasn't there. "Hurry up" he yelled to his daughter. "I'm not going to waste my time, or gas driving you to school today when the bus comes and picks you up for free!!" And, just in time, she ran to meet the bus, but not before he handed her $1.50 for lunch. With the reduced lunch program, it was more convenient to just give her $1.50 rather than make something every day.

John smiled as he backed out of the driveway. A free education, who could ask for anything else, plus, his wife was free to do volunteer work at the food pantry, especially since they got the grant from the governement for faith based iniatives. She was going to, however, pick the youngest up from the day care center early today (boy that tax credit finally made it affordable) so she could meet the Parents as Teachers volunteer at their house. Plus, she had to pick up the middle child early from school to take them to the health department for their $5 vaccinations.

John settled in to his desk and began his day. It wasn't long until his boss came by with his paycheck. He looked it over and, as usual, was frustrated with all the taxes taken out, what what could one do? Over his lunch break he stopped at the bank, his FDIC insured bank, and deposited the check. He wished his check was bigger, but working for a small company made things difficult. Fortunately, his company was doing ok, especially with the new Small Business Association (SBA) Loan they got from the governement

After a long day at the office, it was nice to be headed home. He hopped on the internet to check traffic at the city's website and saw that things looked good, at least for now, but when he got in his car, the over the road signs showed an accident ahead. John pushed his gps button to give him a detour. He never really thought anymore about the governement satellites that powered his GPS, but he sure did when he first bought the thing. He turned on the radio, but they were doing an Emergency Alert System test. "If this had been an actual emergency..." John turned it off. He wasn't terribly late getting home, even with the traffic congestion. He sat down and enjoyed dinner with his family.

After dinner, he talked to his children about school that day. There was much to discuss, including the new wing that was suppossed to be open later that year. It included an Olympic sized swimming pool that would be open sometimes to the public. His daughter told him about the computer class she was taking and how much she enjoyed it. He was impressed. His third child visited the free health clinic today with a headache, but seemed to be ok now. School was so advanced. It was like a little community. They had their own nurses, computer technicians, police officers, all in their small town public school. Plus, the school even permitted them to sing one verse of Silent NIght every Christmas, right after "Here comes Santa Clause", and right before the recognition of Kwanzaa.

John paid the bills next. He hated this part of the week, but he had to do it. He wrote out the house payment. At least he got the interest deduction every year. He also wrote out the payment for he and his wife's student loans. At least it's not as bad as it could have been if they hadn't both had Pell Grants too.

JOhn looked down at his watch. It was almost time for the presidential debate. He turned on the TV and settled in. AFter watching both candidates for a few minutes he let out a big sigh. "What's the matter dad?" His daughter asked. "I'm just afraid if that candidate is elected, we might become a socialist country, and we can't afford for that to happen!!!"

Just something to think about!!!

2nd place

I have heard that dealing with winning the Silver Medal in the Olympics is one of the hardest things in sports. If you win the Bronze, you are thrilled that you even placed. When you win the gold, you know you are the best. When you win the silver, you aren't quite the best, you are just 2nd place. You won't make it into any record books, you won't be remembered, and people will not be likely to talk about you around the water cooler the next day. You were only in 2nd place.

I have been thinking about this quite a bit lately. It seems like often, actually most of the time, I come in second, and it is hard to deal with. When I was laid of a few years ago, I cannot tell you the number of times that I heard that I was a close second to the guy they hired. When we have been considering adoption, we come in a close second often before we are chosen for a child. It seems I am often 2nd best, and quite honestly sometimes it bothers me.

However, I have also thought that maybe it shouldn't bother me. Rather than being bothered that I am second best, maybe I should rejoice in the someone who is the best. Maybe I should realize that I am second best in something, but at least I have been blessed to be good in that thing. Maybe I should be content, actually, no maybe, I should be content with where I am.

More importantly, however, I do know there is one thing I am best at. I am the best husband my wife has, and the best dad my children have. When I think about it, that's enough. I am ok being 2nd place in everything else, if I do that the best I can.

Where I've been, and I'm moving

Well, for both of you that are left reading this blog, you may have wondered what happened to me.
Well, I've been busy. You see, I have a dream of someday being able to work from home, and I am doing everything I can to move in that direction. In light of that, I have started a business converting old media (cassettes, Super 8, VHS, etc) to new media (DVD and CD), among other things. My business name, for now is Heritage Media. I say all that to say that I have moved my blog to my business site. The new address it http://www.freewebs.com/heritagemedia/leavingalegacyblog.htm. Now, please understand, I will be doing the same thing there I have done here. It won't be just one big giant advertisement, but I really liked the idea of having the blog on the same page as my business. Stop by and let me know what you think. I may still update here on a rare occassion, and I hope to eventually move all my old posts to my new blog, but for now, consider my blog officially moved.

What is Beauty

In my job I see lots of "beautiful" women. I am sure most of you guys do too. It doesn't take much to see women who are, at least by the world's standard, beautiful. You know the stereotype, long blond hair, blowing in a breeze, long legs, short dress, large... you know..., low blouse and puckery lips. That's right, that's our society's definition of beautiful. Men drool over those pictures of those women, ladies panic that they don't look like it, boys fantasize about it and girls try to become it. Beauty??? I want to stand up and say "NO, NO, NO and NO" This Valentine's Day, let me tell you what I see as truly beautiful.

True beauty is in the smiling face I greet when I woak in the door tired after a full day of work. She's tired too, after all, in many ways, she probably worked harder than I did, but I still see the smile, not only on her lips and in her cheeks, but in her eyes too. True beauty is the loving mother giving a two armed bear hug to a tired child who cralwed up on her lap just before bed, thumb in mouth, and head on her shoulder. Beauty is snuggly, cute sweatshirt and denim skirt that makes me jst want to put my arm around her and pull her close. Beauty if waking up beside her in the morning, with her beautiful, long hair strewn over her cheek and pillow as she lays on her side sleeping soundly. Beauty is a wife who puts up with my hassels and my annoyances with a smile and joy. Beauty is a wife who does her best to honor God and honor her husband. Beauty if a wife who loves her children and does what is best for them, without complaint. Beauty is a wife who is willing to sit and snuggle with me on the couch, for no reason other than to want to be close to me (go figure). Beauty is a wife who will not just say "I'm sorry", but will repent for her mistakes and strive to do better.

I get fed up with the phoniness of beauty as defined by the world. Give me the inner beauty of my wife any day!!!! Now, don't get me wrong, my wife has inner beauty, but she is also just plain gorgeous on the outside. But, that ouside beauty is caused by what happens inside, it's NOT fake.

It is interesting when you think about Proverbs 31. It talks a bout a woman whose value is far above rubies. Rubies are a pretty stone, but it is their value, their inner value that enhances their beauty. There are plenty of pretty stones out there that are worthless. That's what makes my wife special she is beautiful with an inner value that shines all over the place. Happy Valentines Day My Love. I thank God for you and for all you do. You are truly a blessing
