I am a bit behind on our homeschool blog. There is just so much going on around here and has been for some time. I finally found a moment to get pictures of a couple of crafts that we made for our Early Immigrants Unit. The first is of our Irish shamrock hats (Shamrock Hat Template). Alex was not too happy that he had to wear his for me to take a picture. The second one is of our Statue of Liberty crowns (Lady Liberty Hat Template). Alex was not too happy about this picture either. :)

We have been learning about the Wild West and all of the different people that you might have seen there, from outlaws to sheriffs to American Indians. For arts and crafts, we made our own teepees. We used construction paper instead of a brown bag. (Teepee Directions)

Earthquake Shakes!

We started our Earthquake Unit this week. For our project, we made this earthquake model that diagrams the focus point, epicenter, and seismic waves. For best results, use cardstock paper. We used construction paper because we were out of cardstock. It seemed to work fine. This project was loads of fun! (Model Template)

The Wild West

It has been quite some time since we did any arts and crafts for school. Well, we finally did one for our Wild West lesson. For our Wild West unit, we are learning about all of the different outlaws and lawmen of the old west. This has been a very interesting subject for us! We made sun catchers! It called for card stock, but we used construction paper instead. Then we used a push pin and punched a pattern of holes through the paper to allow the sun through. (Sun Catcher Directions)

Handprint Suns & Sundials

We have begun our unit about the Sun. Here are two of our first project that we did. We made handprint suns. I know they are a bit simplistic for their age, but they had fun making them. (Sun Directions)

We also made sun dials. Now, we did ours differently from the directions. We were suppose to use straws for the center. We were also suppose to start at noon and put a mark for each hour to make them a little more accurate. However, we have not had enough sun or time to do them correctly, so we simply made them the best we could. They got the basic idea of it. (Sundial Directions)

Freedom Quilt

We have been learning about the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman. One of the clues that runaway slaves had along the Underground Railroad were freedom quilts. These quilts were hung out on fences or windows to air out. The patterns on the quilts told the runaways where to find water, when it was time to leave their plantations to head north, and whether it was safe to travel through certain areas. We made a freedom quilt of our own. We included pictures of the big dipper (known as the drinking gourd), the north star, windows with candles showing it was a safe house to stop, and more.

T-Rex Milk Jug Fossil

We made these fossils out of empty milk jugs. We traced the pattern onto the jug with dry erase markers using a picture of a T-Rex fossil. Then we used a knife to get the cuts started. Afterwards, we switched to scissors. We spray painted them white. (T-Rex Fossil Directions)

We have started our Dinosaur Unit. It will only have two lessons and then the test, but we will learn alot during that time anyways. For todays lesson we learned about how scientists use the fossils to discover the habits and the environment of dinosaurs. So we made our own fossils out of broken noodles. Fingerprint Whales

We are finishing up our Ocean Life Unit with whales. We really didn't go into detail about whales. We only talked about the Blue Whale being the largest creature on earth. Frog Pond

We learned about amphibians and how they are different from reptiles. This lesson explains how frogs and toads live a dual-life: part of their life in water and part of it on land. Using a frog's life-cycle cut-outs from the print sheet, we colored a pond and added the different stages of a frog's life during their metamorphosis. (Frog-Cycle Template)

This lesson was rather easy, but we needed to freshen up on the water cycle to know why salt stays in the ocean. There wheels show how water evaporates and forms into clouds above land. It then falls as snow or rain. You can spin the back circle making the water appear to move in a cycle. (Water Wheel Template)
