What's Worse Than a Dead Skunk...

A dead squirrel in your ceiling!

Want to know how I know?

For the last couple of months we've had an awful stench, that comes and goes, in our master bedroom closet. At first I just thought it was dh. :-) Then we removed all our shoes, and things from the shelves, and cleaned everything well, thinking there was a dead mouse in there somewhere. Nothing. When the smell returned last week, worse instead of better, we removed all of our clothes, as well as everything else, and put them in another room. The smell seemed to grow worse.

By this time the idea of a dead mouse in the walls was becoming a dead body under the house - well, at least a possum or a cat or something. Surely a mouse would have disintegrated by now.

While I was gone last week, after I'd removed everything from the closet, dh set out to investigate. First crawling under the house. Of course, our closet is in the far corner from the opening to get in the crawlspace. Nothing.

He told me he was checking the ceiling next. He didn't. He decided to tear out a wall first. Nothing. Finally, he pulled down the ceiling. As he shifted around the insulation ---- down it came! some insulation paper with a dead squirrel in it. UGHHHH!

I'm glad I was gone.

Now - dh is re-drywalling the ceiling. Re-drywalling and mudding the wall.

My clothes are still in piles, covering the bed and desk in the guest room. My shoes are still in trashbags covering the floor of the guest room. Awaiting the repainting and applying of the trim in the closet.

But at least the smell is gone.

The pattering of little feet across the roof of the house isn't near as cheerful a sound as it was a few months ago.

He's at it again

Greetings from Me and My House,

I went to Homeschool Convention this past week. On the phone with 4yo ds the day I was coming home, I told him I was coming home and asked if he missed me. Was he ready for me to come home?

"No."

OK. The next day at home, as he was getting ready to go to his brother's soccer game, and I was staying home, he said, "Bye Mom. I'll miss you."

Fickle or convicted, I'll take it. :-)

Stay tuned for the excitement at home while I was gone. You won't want to miss this one.

Things Children Say

Greetings from Me and My House,

New update to our children's vocabulary misunderstandings.

Overheard at lunch today, by 4 year old son, spoken about his sister.

"I'm a male. Shekynah is an email."

BTW, 6 yo son is now praying "Dear Heavenly Father," not to our "danly" father.
Hopefully, we've also brought understanding to the 4yo that girls are Females, not emails.

New Law

If you haven't heard of the new law taking effect on Feb. 10th, that will affect the selling (and giving) of all children's products - including toys, clothes, books, curriculum, etc., do some research and contact your Congressmen and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The law is called Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, CPSIA.
I've written about some of the potential ramifications of this law, that appears to not have be well thought out at all. It will affect us as parents (or anyone that buys for children), home educators, and taxpayers in general.

Scott Frost?

Greetings from Me and My House,

We sometimes wonder where our children get the ideas they have, the connections they make through their immature thinking. Here's today's from our 6 yo.

You may not get it if you aren't from Nebraska. :-) He's never seen this Christmas show (I don't think), so the only reference point he had for it was probably a commercial for it. And this is the connection he made.

He was looking at candle holders we have that have snow men that are ice skating and sledding. He said,"Snow men can't do that; they would break." Here's what followed:

"There's a movie about a kid who makes a snowman and it comes to life. But it's really Scott Frost."

When his brother told him it wasn't, "Scott Frost is a football player," he was adamant, "No, it's a different Scott Frost."

"No, there isn't."

"Yes, there's another Scott Frost in a snow movie."

"No, that is Jack Frost."

By now he was totally confused.
