More History Fun...

We have History on M,W, and Friday's... Friday is usually a wrap up and quiz. On last weeks wrap up we were supposed to make a cake map of the Nile! What a fun project for us...
We started with just a boxed cake mix baked in a sheet pan so we would have more of an area to work with.
At the top of course is the Mediterranean Sea and then we attempted to mimic the Nile... we know that if you are in Egypt or know anything about the area, the Nile appears to run UP instead of down.
And that Upper Egypt is actually much more Southern than Lower Egypt (The Egyptians named the areas that because of the elevation).
Eli is mixing up some more 'sand' frosting.
Then we marked off important places in Egypt....
Cairo
Giza
The Great Hall at Karnak
Abu Simbel (where Ramses the Great built a HUGE tomb)
And several more!
It was a really fun project and it helped the information stick...
I LOVE it when that happens. :)
I gave them an A+... great fun, great learning! :)

Homeschool History Fun

Eli the Mummy, prepared for burial along with one of his favorite treasures.
As you can see, we are studying Early Egyptians right now. As I have said before, we use Mystery of History as our history curriculum. And we love it. It gives great ideas and lots of good information.
Here the children and I are constructing a pyramid. The one 'we' made is only 2000 times smaller than The Great Pyramid at Giza.
Fun times!
Next week, once we get our time line caught up I will share pics of that. I went looking for a sewing board and found one at the flea market for $1!!!
Yeah! :)
Now to transfer our work to the board.

Let me tell you what happened to me Sunday...

Let me tell you a little story. Many, many years ago I went to a retreat as a young girl. For the first time I really heard about what Jesus did for you and for me. I was broken over my sins... I KNEW I was a sinner, in need of a Savior. I walked the aisle, very sorry for how I had broken Jesus' heart and repeated what the preacher told me to and so from that point on I started doing what a good Christian should do. We got in church, I started singing in the choir and helping in Sunday School classes for children... anything I could do, I did it.
For the longest time afterwards I felt something was lacking in my relationship with the Lord. When I would begin to feel that way, I would pray and do more. Only to feel something was missing again later on.
What is wrong I wondered... Why don't I have the joy that I want, instead of this ache in me.
For almost 19 years this went on. I finally had pushed it away so much that I didn't 'feel' it much anymore.
Sunday morning we had a FANTASTIC Sunday service. Our Pastor preached on the parable of the wheat and the tares. A tare looks like, feels like, and is often mistaken for wheat. The problem is, when you open it up...
It's empty, hollow, a void is there...
I sat there with an uneasy feeling in my heart. One that I pushed out of my mind.
I saw several people get saved that morning and I was tickled for them.
Shannon and I came home and heated up some leftovers for lunch. The children had gone to Grandmaw Sandy's.
Still with a gnawing in my stomach I began to pick a fight with him. I started fussing with him about this and that... nothing important, but it was strange that I just was this irritable about such trivial things.
I brought up the service while we were eating and we began discussing what happened, how wonderful it was and then began talking about the time when we asked the Lord to become Lord of our lives.
Shannon was only 7! He said he remembered asking the Lord to forgive him and that he surrendered his life to Him.
I couldn't admit to surrendering. It made me angry... how could one who has helped others, went on mission trips, worked in the church, sang in the choir and such NOT be a believer?????
HOW????
IT COULD NOT BE POSSIBLE!!!!
I began to weep... the Lord was convicting me and I fought against it... my pride was so welled up in me that I couldn't admit to my facade that I had played for so long.
I can't do it... I can't admit it... if I do I will look so foolish!
I couldn't even see how I was focusing on 'me', 'me', 'me'!!!!!
When all this time He was pleading with me to let it become about HIM!
So all that to say friends,
I have played church, I have played Christian, I have played and played and played...
I had just enough head knowledge for it not to be real, I mean really real in me.
The Lord wanted me to give him my life, and all I did was go through the motions.
Sunday afternoon about 3 pm, I surrendered.
I repented of my sins, of my pride and my arrogance. I asked the Lord Jesus to take control of my life and to live in and through me. I asked Him to use me.
I got saved! Not for the second time... that is not how it works.
I got saved, plain and simple for once and for all!
I am His and He is mine!!!!
Friends, I wanted to share this with you, because I know if it could happen to me, it could happen to others. We get all caught up in 'doing', we get all caught up with an 'experience'.
Now don't get me wrong, it was an experience... one that I will NEVER forget... the brokenness, the sorrow in my heart was overwhelming.
But then, my friends, the FREEDOM that I know now is indescribable.
I want to share with you... I wanted you to know how the Lord has changed my life!!!!
I am blown away.
I am assured...

S is for 'Stained Glass "Valentine's Hearts

I try my best to include arts and crafts in our homeschool activities. My children LOVE to make things.
Yesterday, being the first school day in February we made some 'stained glass' hearts.
All you need is some old crayons, a crayon sharpener, wax paper, scissors, a dish towel and a warm iron.
Shave the crayons with a knife or gather the shavings from a crayon sharpener. Lay the shavings in between two sheets of wax paper.
Place a dish towel over the creation and iron gently with a warm iron.
The crayon shavings will melt and make a lovely swirl of colors.
Cut hearts out of the multi-colored wax paper and tape to windows and let the light shine through...Have a great day...

Mail!?!?!

My Carlie Jean LOVES mail, LOVES it! It doesn't matter to her that it usually is not addressed to her, that she rarely ever receives mail... she doesn't care, she just LOVES to check the mailbox.
The other day when Shannon took the three youngers on an errand, Cameo and I made a gift for her while they were gone.
We took a smallish shoe box and wrapped it in brown craft paper.
Cut one end to make a 'flap'.
I wrote our names on the side and of course put up the flag.
Afterwards we filled it up with sweet little cards, one for each member of the family, telling them just how special they truly are, and how much I adore them. Shannon's said to 'Meet me under the mistletoe.' :)
Now Carlie has a place to put all the mail she writes and she doesn't have to stick them in hiding spots waiting for the recipient to find them.
She is tickled that she can check the mail ANYTIME of the day now!!!
Don't you love it when something so simple can be so super in the eyes of your child? Have a great day friends.

Paper Star Ornaments

Hello my friends! What a great day it is looking to be. Let's get started on the stars...
Start with, some card stock, double sided tape, some scissors, and a ruler, the buttons and glue are optional. :)
Cut 6 two-by-two inch squares in the colors of your choice, I am a traditional gal. I LOVE red and green.
Take one of your squares and fold it in half
Now fold it in half the other way, and now fold into a triangle
This is the only tricky part.
Fold the outer edges of your triangle towards the middle
Until you have this...
Whew... the hard part is over, it is all down hill from here :)
Do all six squares the same way
Now grab your double-sided tape and get ready to stick.
Hold one of your squares/diamonds and put one small piece of double stick tape on the center of the outside, like so
Now take an alternating color (if you choose) and stick in the same direction onto your first square, so they are both opening in the same way.
Continue this process until all six are stuck together.
Woohoo, we are almost there! :)
When you let go your 'accordion' star will open backwards, that is what it should do, bring it on around until it touches.
Take a last piece of double stick tape and attach the first and last sides together
Once attached you are ready to punch a small hole in the top and run a happy ribbon through and hang on your tree.
Or you can adorn your star by gluing a rhinestone or button to the middle.

Happy December 1st!

How exciting! Here we are, just 24 days away from that blessed holiday... Christmas! And what did we wake up to this morning? SNOW! Yes, if you can believe it, it was snowing here. No it did not last long, but for those of us around these parts it was really exciting! Especially the children. Abram rushed to the window and then ran to his room, put on at least 4-5 shirts and 3 pairs of pants and his overalls on over everything... he looks so chunky because of all the clothes. It was really cute.
I have been sick most of the weekend, I got sick after our party Saturday night and have been sickly since. I feel MUCH better today, but am still quite weak from the sickness.
I have much to catch up on around here, so I must tarry. I hope you all have a wonderful week.
