So -- how it is going?

I'm wondering if the powers that be are feeling the pinch. I've "heard of" a few deserters... do they know that? If we all leave blogs here so we can comment... but really blog somewhere else... that probably doesn't make the count go down any.

I watch my blogs through my Google home page. When I click on a name of a blog, I don't know before hand if it is HSB or not... but as it slowly loads... I think... "Oh... this one must be on HSB." That's too bad. I wonder what happened to cause that.

Wel -- I'll update you a little here. We are all healthy and well. Praise GOD! But by the grace of God, huh!?!

Mansel is at a wrestling tournament today. His Dag and sister are tagging along. Victoria is going to video tape it today. She's getting pretty good at that. Last year we saw a lot of ceiling shots. HA HA

Today -- I'm home with the 3 littles. I think I'll excercise some then shower, then do some organizing. My dining room needs straightened... I think I'll go in there.

My weight is still slowing falling off. I'm 23 pounds away from my goal now. I was looking in the mirror and wondering if when I looked at myself, if I still looked fat. If when other people looked at me that thought... "boy she could stand to lose a few pounds". My fear is that I'll get thin, then look ugly. I don't think really thin people are attractive. In fact I think when people lose a drastic amount of weight that their faces look old and haggard. I'd rather look at a plump pleasant face, then a thin narrow, sad looking one. I'm trying to make sure my countenance reflects Jesus as I lose weight. If my goal weight is too thin... hmmm... I wonder what i'll do. HA HA HA..

I notice the closer I get the slower it is coming off too. I may have to change my ending date. But I've always said, 'I'll be happy at 150", which is above my goal. So maybe I'll settle back at that weight once I reach my goal. I'm NOT going to change my goal... but well -- we'll see... I may hit my goal -- decide if I like it or not -- then settle somewhere else. Ü

It's supposed to snow again this weekend. My kids are LOVING the sledding weather. The county dug out our ditches this summer. In fact they were doing that during one of the hottest day of the year. I drove down there to talk to them and was sweating by the time I hit the car. Whew... but I remembered thinking, "That's going to be a great sledding place." Luckily we don't have much traffic on our road when it isn't planting or harvest season. Especially during the day, when school is in session. So -- my kids drug their sleds up to the top of the hill... and we have our own private sledding run. Probably 100 feet long. Straight, smooth, no rocks, trees, or shrubs in the ditch because they scooped all that stuff out this summer. Flat and straight down hill. The only probablem is that it ends in a creek... but they've managed to stop before they hit that most times. Besides... it's frozen. The sun is just peeking up over the horizon and it's still in single digits. 9° Woo hoo..

I'm going through the Command of Christ on-line at IBLP for my devotions and really learning a lot. I'm also going through them at Church at a much slower pace. I pray that all that I'm hearing will really sink in! I think it is AWESOME how the Holy Spirit was directing my devotional life. I'm getting these commands at home, then 3 times on Sunday. NEAT!

Well -- It's around 8:00... I better go get the littles ready to greet the day.

6 things you might not have known about me.

Oh -- I don't really care for these things, because there are so many... I live a very secret life. OK -- here goes. Just don't you be asking my kiddos about some of these things! LOL

I've got a tattoo and it looks like this . Location will NOT be disclosed... that will remain a secret -- forever. LOL
I was an E5 in the Iowa Army National Guard when I was given an honorable discharge. OK -- my kids know this. They love to wear my old t-shirts. YEP -- I've still got my boots. So... their friends can say, "Your mama wears army boots," and be pretty close to being right.
I really would eat frosting out of the jar every day of my life, if it were in the house. Oh man... I'm working on this though. For now -- I just don't buy it.
I once stole NO-DOZ from a grocery store in Cedar Rapids, IA... then got caught... then they called the police... then the police said they were too busy...then they called my MOM. (Now I'm thinking... did they really call the police and they said they were too busy??) LOL... that's o.k. it worked... sacred the bejeezus right out of me!!!
I set the cruise when I drive, or else I'd be flying down the highway trying to see if I can achieve lift off. Speed is a good thing. Oh, Oh... I once drove an entire year with NO drivers licence because I flunked the refresher drivers test. I had to take that because my license had expired. So -- I left with my expired license in hand (why didn't they take it?) I drove away. Ha Ha...then came back in one year... said, "My license is expired"... didn't mention the year, and she said, "Oh... less than 30 days, you are lucky -- no test." Ta dah...I'm a legal driver today -- but I know nothing. I NEVER let it expire now. NEVER!!
My daddy was a preacher, and he once asked me if he needed to get out of the ministry because he was not able to control his daughter. That worked too... then I straightened up until I left home. I really believe he would have done it too... more preachers need to act like my daddy. Just take a step back and look at their world around them, and follow what the Bible says.

OK -- I purged... now.. they say, "Confession is good for the soul." But I just feel a little dirty. Good grief... I need to go shower or something.

Quit tagging me!! LOL And WHY do the fonts change when I hit enter. That's irritating...

OH well -- it looks like I'm whispering.

Kiddos are tryign out their new roller blades in the garage right now. I sent them out doors! Praise the Lord for the nice sunshine today.

Have an extended fast every 3 months.
Find good for us snacks for kids.
Look into diet change for MILO.
Have my devotions regularly - after exercise - before computer. Finish Thomas E. Kempis, find more A.W. Tozer.
work on my meek and quiet spirit, pray before responding, each time.
Go 365 days with out cutting my hair.
Never watch TV unless my dh is watching TV.
Read 12 books. (Keep track on my blog.) Some of which should be the Charlotte Mason series.
Have an "real life" friend over for tea 6 times. (6 different friends... if I can find them... one at a time)

These are not listed in order of importance.

Now -- often times I struggle with keeping these, so I'm going write here why these are important to me -- in case I need to "encourage myself in the Lord". ;)

I need to get it together here... I remember blogging about this before. I think perhaps I've had a baby since then. Now baby is 18mo... time to whip the old temple back into shape. Keeping up with 5 kiddos is important to me. Being a good example to my children is also important. In order to do this -- I have to exercise 4-5 times a week. Maybe even 5-6 times... but I'm not going to push it. CATHE on FitTV is a great one for me to do right now. I'll do it as long as my knees can take it. Some days I have to skip her... too much jumping... but the weight lifting days are excellent work out for me.

(Mat 18:6) But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
Yep... that's one of the really big reasons why I need to use self-control in this area. Offending little ones... it's a big offense in the sight of the Lord.

Have an extended fast every 3 months.
(Mat 6:16) Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
Yeah -- I noticed that too.. it says WHEN ye fast. Not IF. So -- I'll fast. Actually I did a REALLY LONG fast this year. My word folks -- if you haven't done it for one reason or another. Start praying. Fall on your face before God and see if it's not something you should be doing. It's amazing how your walk with God changes. I'm chomping at the bit to get back to that again!! I can't wait to feel that special closeness again... with my Heavenly Father.

Find "good for us" snacks for kids.
Is this one biblical? I think it's important for me as a parent to train the kiddos how they should be acting as adults. So if they get used to the "good stuff" when they are young... perhaps it will be easier as an adult to maintain good health with good eating habits. I guess this verse would apply... (Pro 22:6) Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. I think their eating habits are effecting their behaviour. Some more than others... thus the next one.

Look into diet change for MILO.

I don't believe in medicating for ADD -- for my family, just yet. I'm going to really read about this. Make sure it's not a sin issue, make sure it's not a laziness issue, make sure it's not a maturity issue, not a mom's not consistent issue, and not a food issue. If we can just change the diet a bit, with good results... then I'll keep digging.

Have my devotions regularly - after exercise - before computer.
Devotions before exercises is a new one for me. I'd sit down to read my Bible early in the morning, and start dozing off. I didn't want that. So I switched up my schedule. After exercise my blood is a pumping!! Excellent time for me. The kids are still in bed, and I'm alert. But I have to get it done before I sign on here. Other wise I get sucked in. Ahhh... I'm such a wimp. Self-control... what is that? Oh, I'll just check this... WAM...what? 30 minutes already? Woah... how did that happen? So the after exercise part is o.k. with me. It's the BEFORE COMPUTER that's the kicker. I'm going to try to not even get on here until after kiddos bed time. Ü That will be a drastic change... we'll see.

I discovered this fall that I DON'T NEED TO RESPOND sometimes. I can just sit there and be praying, "Lord what do I say?" And if nothing comes to mind... then I need to say nothing. BUT that means I need to be praying... almost with out ceasing. Novel idea. Oh look it here... (1Th 5:16) Rejoice evermore. 17) Pray without ceasing. 18) In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Go 365 days with out cutting my hair.
That's just a personal preference. Ü I want long hair -- well, long for me -- one more time. I hear you are supposed to have short hair after you turn 40. (Obviously, my sister is a hair dresser). So... either I'll grow it long enough for a bun, or when I'm 40... I'll cut it. But can I make it 1 year with out cutting it? I don't know... I love cutting hair. My poor kids... none of them have long hair either. Especially my boys. LOL

OK -- now this one may be harder than I first thought. We just signed up for Netflix. I do normally shut off the electronics during the summer months... and now my dh is going to suspend the dish service during the "off season". (He loves football and wrestling). So we thought a good alternative would be Netflix. It's waaay less expensive than the Family Video in town. Plus gas. Plus the selection is better... But I want to be a good example to my kiddos again. There is always something better than TV. No matter what is on. So I need to reinforce that in their minds by... if it's my choice... to not watch TV. I'm not going to sit in the other room while DH is watching... he likes to watch WITH me... so I'll be his TV pal... but if it's up to me... we'll chose the BEST thing. (Good, Better, BEST!)

Read 12 books.
I have not arrived. I need to ever be learning. BUT -- keeping in mind, that the one who knows more on judgement day... will be kept to a higher standard. So... read wisely. Apply biblical standards, and obey them! I want them to be goodies too... not novels. Charlotte Mason -- at least 3 of hers. A.W. Tozer is a goodie. I hang out at Paperback Swap some... so I hope to find 12 good ones there. Iliad... I just found that -- can that count for 2 books? It's thick. Ü Maybe I'll tackle that this summer when school lets out.

(1Pe 4:9) Use hospitality one to another without grudging. There were 4 verses on hospitality actually... all good. That goes to show how important it is. I don't do it enough. Always some excuse! But I really want to walk with God. I feel I need to obey in this area. So -- I've bought my biscuits. I have my flavored coffee... now... to find a friend. ;) LOL

Which I might add -- wouldn't be a bad idea for you either. You could print off my list, and start praying! Even before 2007 sets in. I wouldn't mind that one bit!

Fox News of course had a good story with all the details. Since I was but a child when he was president, I don't remember much of him. I'll have to do more reading.

I'm praying President Ford's family will experience peace and comfort that defys human understanding.

My children's talents

I'm found this site from cathmom's blog.

So I'm going to take a quiz for each child and see if I learn anything new.

Tori first, 11yo:

Your child has a great analytical ability. You may be living with the next Einstein, Marie Curie, or Bill Gates. Your child likes to categorize things, places, and looks for interrelationships between ideas, things and activities. They like computers, science and math.

Activities she might enjoy: Puzzles, logic games, chess and checkers, chemistry sets, and science kits.

Ding, ding, ding. She does do really well in math... although she pretends she doesn't like it. (That's just laziness... she doesn't want to do the work, but she does well when she does it.) She tried to get anyone and everyone to play checkers with her. Or Monopoly. Ü

Mansel, 7yo:

Your child has exceptional linguistic ability. Your child could be the next president. Also, your child may be the next Dale Carnegie, Dr. Seuss, or JK Rowland.

Your child can hear things and remember them easily. They are often advanced readers and learn to talk quickly. They enjoy telling stories. They learn other languages easily. They can generalize how their language is put together in written and spoken form readily.

Word games such as scrabble, crossword puzzles, anagrams, spelling games and most of all, reading.

Your child will probably start writing at a young age, so have plenty of pencils, crayons, and paper handy.

Oh WOW. That is amazing how they nailed him. I really did notice a difference since I started schooling him. Funny to see how fast he has learned to read. Once again -- he'd rather be playing outside, than reading... but he really picked it up quickly, and is excited that the First Grade Pathway Reader is "easy". Ü Like Jeanne said, he couldn't be the NEXT president, because he is only 7. Too funny...

Although -- he did NOT learn to talk quickly. He didn't talk until after the age of 2. But once he learned, there was no stopping. It did say it wasn't a scientific study. LOL

Now the next child is totally different then Mansel -- it will be interesting to see what the quiz says about him.

Milo, 5yo:

Your child has strong spatial ability. Your may be living with the next famous astronomer such as Carl Sagin or the next cutting edge artist such as Picasso or Frida Kahlo.

These children can spot everything, including candy hidden behind your back. They know where everything is located in the house. They are great at finding lost items for other family members. They think in pictures and forms. These

children enjoy jigsaw puzzles, mazes, and art activities. They draw proportions very accurately, and like to design using paper and pencil, clay, and visual art activities. They love illustrations in picture books, video games, movies, and photographs.

I knew he was different then Mansel, but I wouldn't have guessed he was a Picasso.

I'm reading Thomas Ë Kempis this morning. (TRANSLATED FROM THE LATIN INTO MODERN ENGLISH, Digitized by Harry Plantinga, planting@cs.pitt.edu, 1994.)

If we were to uproot only one vice each year, we should soon become perfect. The contrary, however, is often the case -- we feel that we were better and purer in the first fervor of our conversion than we are after many years in the practice of our faith. Our fervor and progress ought to increase day by day; yet it is now considered noteworthy if a man can retain even a part of his first fervor.

If we did a little violence to ourselves at the start, we should afterwards be able to do all things with ease and joy. It is hard to break old habits, but harder still to go against our will.

If you do not overcome small, trifling things, how will you overcome the more difficult? Resist temptations in the beginning, and unlearn the evil habit lest perhaps, little by little, it lead to a more evil one.

I've found that same line of thought in Charlotte Mason's material, Volume 2: Parents And Children A collection of 26 articles from the original Parent's Review magazines to encourage and instruct parents. It reads like this.

One Custom Overcomes Another––But one custom overcomes another. The watchful mother sets up new tracks in other directions; and she sees to it, that while she is leading new thoughts through the new way, the old, deeply worn 'way of thinking' is quite disused. Now, the cerebrum is in a state of rapid waste and rapid growth. The new growth takes shape from the new thought: the old is lost in the steady waste, and the child is reformed, physically as well as morally and mentally. That the nervous tissue of the cerebrum should be thus the instrument of the mind need not surprise us when we think how the muscles and joints of the tumbler, the vocal organs of the singer, the finger-ends of the watchmaker; the palate of the tea-taster, grow to the uses they are steadily put to; and, much more, both in the case of the brain and all other organs, grow to the uses they are earliest put to.

This meets in a wonderful way the case of the parent who sets himself to cure a moral failing. He sets up the course of new thoughts, and hinders those of the past, until the new thoughts shall have become automatic and run of their own accord. All the time a sort of disintegration is going on in the place that held the disused thoughts; and here is the parent's advantage. If the boy return (as, from inherited tendency, he still may do) to his old habits of thought, behold, there is no more place for them in his physical being; to make a new place is a work of time, and in this work the parent can overtake and hinder him without much effort

Now -- I just need someone to train me to "change my tracks", or I need to get rid of my own vices first. I do see the benefit of overcoming the little things in my children, before they become deep rooted habits, or ways of life. Is it just repeating over and over, let's do it this way. Practice, practice, practice... even if it is closing a door when you come inside. I think repetition is key in some ways of learning. It is found to be true in all ways?

How about screaming at a brother. "We don't scream here, why don't you try saying, please give that back." Then have them say it over and over again in a gentle tone, until we tire of it...and perhaps it will click the next time they scream and they'll stop mid-scream, or even remember when they get the urge to scream?

Or cleaning the bedroom. Each day before they come down for breakfast. Bed must be made, and dirty clothes put away. What happens when they "forget"? Which I don't think it is forgetting... I think it's laziness... seeing if they can get away with it today. Go back up and do it before you eat -- but actually since you came down with it undone... no breakfast. How do you do that over and over again? Just remembering to check each day? And no breakfast for a week, if that is how long it takes them to "remember" to do it?

Then I need to be checking on people times 5. I'm not that consistent. That is one reason why we seem more lenient with the youngers. I had time, patience, resources, to check and re check on 1 or 2 children. Now I have to check on 4, and do the rest for #5. It would be nice if I could let everything else go while I was doing the checking... but then dear husband walks in and its all a mess... but I should be able to say, "But look -- we developed a habit of having a clean bedroom before breakfast."

OK -- I'm open to suggestions here. I really do believe in what KEMPIS and MASON have to say, but now when the rubber meets the road. How do I put that into practice? How to I apply that?

Speaking of "learning new tracks"... anyone figure out how to read their friends blogs with out click on each and every name? I tried that yesterday -- thinking I could subscribe to them and read them on my Google page.... but I don't see any way to do that. Are the RSS shut off of everyone's? HELP!!! I don't like change. ha ha LOL

Christmas over at your house? It is at ours. Whew... Ü What a bunch of fun.

I fixed my template. Just picked a new one -- actually chose the same old one, but started fresh. Now... I have to figure out how to add my "rings" back on here. Ü I think that is what messed me up in the first place. But I'll work on it.

I got 2 more new books -- new to me -- from PBS. YEAH!!

The Indian in the Cupboard by Lunne Reid Banks AND The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. New reads for me... I look forward to reading them both. But I have so many new ones that I think I'll be clear into summer before I get them all read. Then in the summer... I'll be reading next years school books... Hmmm... Something must go. Ü

Only one more precious week of "no school" left. I worked on a puzzle today. Squandered the whole day away relaxing and working on a puzzle. I don't do that much. It was fun! Not finished yet. It's a hard one. A topographical map with our house in the middle. 4 miles north and south, and 6 miles east and west. Highways, hills, ponds, trees... not much else. I do see the Sewage Disposal Pond on there. I didn't know whe had one so close. Hmm... I found the Olive Chapel church... and the border is done. All the straight edges... now I'm hoping to not lose interest before I finish. I'd like to save this puzzle... frame it or something. Neat little thing.

Funny thing is... my sister got that for all of her other sisters. Then un-awares... my mom got one for her. Ha ha... Funny. Isn't that what we usually do. Get gifts for other people that we woudl relaly like ourselves. I do that anyway.

OK -- I'd better go check on the mac-n-cheese. I'm skimping on lunch today. I was puzzling today -- not thinking about supper. Ü

70's revisited...

You thought Olivia Newton John's song "Physical" was about aerobics. She had aerobic clothes on... it wasn't? Hmmm...

You wore friendship pins on your tennis shoes, or shoelaces with
heart or rainbow designs. I did this too. Those safety pins with beads on them. Funny thing is... I think my daughter would like that too. (I must be old!) HA HA

You drowned yourself in Love's Baby Soft - which was the first "real" perfume you ever owned .. . Don't you still love that smell?

A Christmas Carol

Today we LISTENED to A Christmas Carol. Our friends who do Living Books for the Ears really out did themselves this time. This one is an hour long. It is abridged somewhat -- but it is done as a play -- so rather hard to "act" some of the stuff in the book. I followed along with our thick hard cover book and they didn't really skip too much. It was EXCELLENTLY done. All 5 of my kiddos stayed and listened through the whole thing. Stinky diapers and all -- which means... I've got to go change some diapers.

Just thought I share a great resource.

FIELD TRIP

I keep doing something wrong... this is the 4th or 5th time I've tried to post this. Hmmm...

I'm getting lots of typing practice today. �

Tuesday we went on a FIELD TRIP to the Iowa Department for the Blind.

I tell you what... we really learned a lot.

One thing we learned is that Josh Leonard is still there. We got to see him and say hello for a bit. He is the son of John and Bev Leonard. What a nice kid. They did a great job raising him! Now we know better how to pray for him and his family.

That wasn't the reason we went on the field trip, but it was a nice benefit.

Since I've typed this over and over again... I'm just paring it down to the essentials. We had a nice time! Learning the living way. �
