WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

As I sit here crying I can't help but ask myself that question. I am so losing my desire to homeschool my oldest. Here it is 6:09 pm and he has only done 1 subject today. Though he has managed to do a lot of other things today like watch TV, fight with his brother, play with the dog, go outside (when I wasn't looking), give me a lecture on how hard his life is and of course go to the bathroom several times.

One of the things that really bothers me is that this type of behavior is now rubbing off on my young son. Now he is goofing off way more then he use to.

What am I doing wrong? Why can't I stop this behavior? I feel like I have done everything but send him back to public school. Everyday I hear I will do better, tomorrow I will do my work without giving you a hard time and I'm so sorry mom. All of which never happens and it is getting harder to believe that he is sorry because he just keeps doing it.

My husband who has been gone all week out of town for work was home when I exploded and he said nothing at least to me. I came up stairs and he come up shortly thereafter and never said a thing. Maybe something like I said something to him or I'm sorry he upset you. Nothing! Great support I got here don't ya think?

My head hurts so much right now and I like screaming (which wouldn't help enough so I won't bother). I feel guility for yelling at him but I get to the point that nothing else helps so it just comes out. What can I do? What would you do?

Signed,
Tearful

When Is Enough Enough?

This is something I posted to some of my groups at the beginning of this month so I thought I would be it here as well.

I'd like to know at what point enough is enough and you put your kid(s) back in ps. I mean we take them out for our own reasons and put them back for our own reasons but what do you do when you have hit a wall. My son is just not doing his work without me begging, pleading, or yelling. Even then it takes all day to do it. Today we had errands to run so he brought with him his grammar and math. We left the house a little past 9:00 am and it is now 3:54 pm and he has done 2 subjects (a total of 4 pages between the two). And after just promising me again he would do his work the way he should I just had to stop typing to go get him (he walked away from his school work and started playing with his brother).

I know that if I send him back it is going to be hell dealing with what I dealt with when he was in K ps (boarded out of his mind) but I just don't know what to do with him anymore. The more the he promises me he will do the work, the more he doesn't. Please don't let this be a slam session on me cause I'm not really in the mood.

I really would like to hear from anyone but maybe some one who has put their children back into school and how it went. Maybe I could hear from some of the kids that went back and how they thought it went. Even better hear from someone who went back and then came home again because they realized the grass wasn't greener or they realized that no matter where they were they had to do the work. Thanks in advance.

So many questions so little time

Let me say I'm sorry now for how long this might be. The more I think about these things the more complicated they get in my head and the only way to stop the madness is to ask someone else so here it goes. We follow the WTM (Well Trained Mind) and next year will technically be the first year that I am hsing 2 kids. My oldest is 9 and I have been hsing him since 1st grade while my now 5 yr old was only 1. So I really had no trouble because I was only schooling 1. Last year when my youngest was 4 I decided to send him to preschool so that the older one would have a year by himself (which didn't work out the way I thought it would). So now the time has come to school them both and I am so lost in so many ways.

Now both of my boys are what people call gifted which is making this more difficult. I have always explained to people about how WTM is being on teaching kids of different ages at the same time but I think I have talking the talk and now I'm not sure I can walk the walk :) This past year my oldest used Saxon 3, R&S 3, SWC, Sequential Spelling, SOTW 3, Living Learning Books for Chemistry, Draw Write Now and some other miscellaneous stuff.

While trying to decide what to use for this coming year I thought I would give both kids the placement test for Saxon. My oldest showed that he should be in Saxon 65 (not 54 which I planned to use) and my youngest showed he should be in Saxon 1 (not K which I planned to use). Because of this I am starting to rethink everything and I am going crazy.

My oldest should be on physics for science so I think I will teach them both that with Neo Science. As far as history my oldest should be on SOTW4 but I don't want to start my youngest there because I have heard it is very violent. I don't know what to do because my oldest is very much a "been there done that" kind of kid so I don't want to go back to SOTW1 fearing that I will get all kinds a flax from him.

I didn't hs my oldest for K so I have no idea what I should be doing with my little one. He has been reading since late age 3. He is on Step-into-Reading 3 books already so I don't know what program to use to further the reading or what to do for phonics and spelling. I don't know if I should be using K stuff or 1st grade stuff or a mix (then which subjects for which grade). :0

Well I have been babbling long enough. All in all I need help with everything. To top it off I am a perfectionist and a planner so I would like to have everything figured out so that I can get it all ready and still have some of the summer to have fun. Thanks in advance to everyone who voices their opinion.

Vacation 2006

Every year we go on vacation Memorial weekend. This year we decided to go to San Antonio, Texas for 10 days. We left on Friday, May 26 and were scheduled to come home Sunday, June 4. The vacation didn't go as well as we thought it would. Saturday morning we ate breakfast at the hotel (a full breakfast came with the price). Shortly after that I was as sick as a dog and my oldest son started feeling bad also. The only thing that we had that no one else had was milk, so I stayed away from the milk for the rest of the stay.

The problems didn't stop there though. After staying in the room all day Sat we decided to go out site seeing on Sun. We went to the Alamo which I thought would be cool since we had just studied about it. The problem I had with it was that I am not a visualist so I couldn't picture how things looked back then. So may not think that is a problem but I was hoping that seeing the Alamo would help connect things in my mind. I thought my oldest would get a bigger kick out of it also but it didn't seem as if he did. I was still cool to be there.

We did a couple more things before coming home despite the fact that both my boys were so sick that we had to take them to an emergency care center in Corpus Christi. They both had bad ear infections and we so miserable. We got them care and some meds and tried to make the best of the rest of the vacation.

We went horseback riding, got to pet wild animals (zebras, deer, and ostrich) at the Wildlife Ranch and we went to the worlds largest water park the Schlitterbahn. We finally came home on June 4 and I am still trying to get the boys well. I took them to their own doctor yesterday and they both still have ear infections and are still on meds.

I think next year we will skip the big vacation and stay in Chicago and do some things the boys have never done. Maybe we will just take some day trips. Then the year after that we will go somewhere big like Thailand or on a cruise somewhere.

Winterum

This week has been crazy for us . I enrolled the boys in what our group calls Winterum. Winterum is a set of classes (this time 3) that are run by mostly homeschool moms. The classes are broken down by grade (nursery, preschool, K-2, 3-6 and high school). This time the classes are phonics/math, woodworking and geography. Classes are 50 mins long and start at 9 am and go unitl noon. My older son age 8 loves it but my younger son age 4 isn't so happy .

I think that the material in the geography class is way over the K-2's heads. The woodworking is cool though. The K-2 grade class made a cross with 3 steps leading to the cross, a cd holder and a paddle boat the moves by winding a rubber band. The 3-6 made a catapolt and now are making a stool.

The week is over now and we survived. We had to adjust the classes for my younger son though. I ended up putting him in the preschool class on Thurs because it was to much of something for him in the K-2 classes. He did stay in the wood working classes though.

I liked the concept but getting my kids up and out the door for a whole week was stressful. My kids and I were wore out by Friday . I think the people who plan this event did a great job and I give they allot of credit . I even said I would be on the planning committee for next year .
