• Mar. 22, 2006 - Cooking Under Pressure Part 1

I am a fairly decent cook.  I don't hear too many complaints anyway.  I even hear a few compliments.  What I can't figure out is why, even when following a recipe, any meal I am making to impress anyone will always fail.  It doesn't matter how many times I've used the recipe, something will go wrong.

I have pondered that maybe God is trying to humble me.  As I am happily going about the company dinner preparations, I am thinking how everyone will compliment me on this fine meal.  They will ask, "How did you get the meat so moist?" and "What spices did you use?"  Oh yes, I am full of myself and my cooking skills.

Evidently many other women have this very problem.  I have heard many a pitiful tale of how when the recipe is under pressure it will flop.  No one so far has shared their innermost thoughts during the preparation.  So, I am left to consider that they are much more righteouss than I.

All of this makes me wonder, did Sarah have this problem when Abraham stepped into the tent  and said, "Um hon, I've brought home a couple of guys to dinner, I hope that won't be a probem."

At least Abraham had told her what he wanted made, and even enlisted some help for her.  Maybe he knew that under pressure her cooking left a lot to be desired and he didn't want his special guests to go back to heaven with salmonella.  He gave her the easiest thing to prepare no less, bread.

Then while Abraham feeds his guests, Sarah is eavesdropping on the conversation taking place outside the tent.  Maybe she was hoping to hear, "This is really good bread Abraham.  How did you get it so soft and chewy?"

...enjoy your writings and this was no exception. I've pretty much given up (although there's still a tiny spark of wanting to give that "perfect" company dinner left) on "company" meals. We offer do-it-yourself nachos, make soups and chili, and we also grill. Everyone seems much happier this way :)

I'm a bit of a risk taker actually. I tend to cook something I have never tried for a dinner with invited guests. But the inner thoughts are much the same. Oh won't they be so impressed that I've created something wonderful that I never cooked before. Then I get the kudos and I smile and say oh, it was nothing. Pathetic huh!? Actually it comes from a sick attempt to get attention from my family, that yes Susan who could not boil water when she left the house can indeed cook up a storm of gourmet foods. I didn't blog last night and it felt weird. I felt like I missed something. I really gotta get a reality check!

I'm NOT so great a cook! lol In fact I've been using this "dinner planner" program the last few weeks. My oldest was home from college tonite for Spring Break and watching me fix dinner. Finally, he says, "this doesn't look like something you'd normally make!" lol I told him we were "upscale" now. Tonite was "pork chops in champagne sauce". I substituted white wine but it was still good. lol He was impressed. Who knows, I may turn a new leaf.

I can't wait to see your Iditarod lapbooks. My dd would love your dd's about the dog care. She LOVES animals. Maybe if I get to meet you when I visit home we can let the kids share their books! ;0)

Be joyful that your heart is in the right place. Serving others through your meal!
I loved the way you tied this in with people from the Bible. I enjoy reading your blog and look forward to some recipes. (hee hee)

I wish I enjoyed cooking more. I'm an okay cook, but I don't cook for company very often, and if I have to I'm a nervous wreck. It's just not my thing. I don't know what my thing is, exactly...but I definitely know it is NOT cooking! LOL

about why sarah was evesdropping on abraham! of course that is why she did it. no woman likes to cook and then have no one comment on how great they are. we weren't having guest, it was just us, but it was christmas dinner that i had dreamt about having so perfectly prepared. all i did was put a roast in the crock-pot, left it to cook all night only to return from church to find that it had decided to not work at some point in that time frame. we had half thawed, cold unroasted beef. i was so disappointed. good thing that there was 1 restaurant open in town!!

Thanks so much for dropping in to say "hi" to me today on my first day of having a blog. I really appreciate the welcome.:)

I have had meals for my family where I am somewhat impressed by my ability to juggle cooking many things at once and I am sure that they will all come out hot at the same time.....As soon as that thought hits my brain, I think, oh no and often things start to go wrong at a rapid pace...and before I know it what a mess. I am quickly humbled and reminded that Pride goes before a fall or a huge kichen dinner mess!:) I enjoyed your post.:)

Hi! One thing I notice about flops is that usually I'm in a hurry or I don't quite have the right ingredient so I just try anyways with something that I think will just do. And then it just doesn't turn out right. I guess practice makes perfect (or atleast a pretty decent, eatible meal)!

That's funny, I would have never thought to compare Abraham and Sarah.

About my Avatar: Tia Turtle is a character in a new book by Gena Suarez, "And Then Mama Said...It Takes Time to Learn to Read." Kevin Collier is the illustrator and he made me my special avatar, because yes, Tia Turtle is named after Me! (Okay, so I'm bragging. Leave me a correctional comment in love.)
