• Apr. 7, 2006 - Sewing on Patches, An Act of Love

Boy 1 and 2 are allergic to nickel.  While this is not a problem for them concerning jewelry, (they don't wear any) it is a problem with belt buckles and pants snaps.  The boy's tummies are covered with an allergic rash from these items rubbing against them.

We have tried several things in hopes of preventing them from being in contact with the nickel.  The belt was easy enough, we found belts that had leather covered buckles.  As for the snaps:

- Tucking in shirts seemed the obvious first choice.  The shirts came untucked.

- Painting nail polish onto the nickel that comes in contact with them was suggested and tried.  The nail polish chipped off rather quickly.  It was not made to be applied to nickel!

- Wearing only pants with buttons or elastic was thought about and tossed aside.  You can't take care of goats in slacks, and you it is not suggested that you go to fancy functions in elastic band pants.  It also leaves you with a life of extremes, well dressed, or slob, take your pick.

- I finally decided to stitch quarter sized pieces of polar fleece over the inside of the snaps.  I did that today and I hope it will be the solution to the problem.  Polor fleece is soft and it doesn't unravel.

While stitching polor fleece to my little boys jeans I began to wonder about their future.  Will their wives love them enough to stitch polar fleece over their snaps?  Maybe I should teach them to do it just in case she won't or they remain single?

What kind of woman wouldn't look at such a task as an act of love and do a small thing for her husbands health?  A liberal feminist!  I pray my sons will listen to their parents and choose a wife wisely.  I found myself praying this very thing, and praying for those girls wherever they are.  I prayed that they were learning to sew, or at least to stitch on patches!  I prayed that these girls were being raised by Biblical standards and not the worlds.

Please, teach your daughters to sew little quarter sized patches onto things.  They might marry my sons!

Very sweet and what a good idea! (Both the praying and the fleece)

However, I have made it a point to make sure my boys know basic sewing, cooking and cleaning. Just good life skills to know, regardless of gender.

I try to keep an eye out for those type of prayer moments. I have been thinking lately that I have not taught my kids the basics. My son can cook slightly. My daughter hates it. Neither can sew. My son has ironed his uniform but I need to teach both more of the basics. I think I will try to hit on a few this summer. If not for me and my kids then for their spouses! I would hate to be one of those Mother-In Laws!

I will definately be teaching my daughters (if I have any, Lord willing) to look to the even the minute things when it comes to being a helpmeet to thier husbands!

What a sweet, caring mom you are. I can imagine what a finicky job sewing those patches must be!

Cool! An ovation *and* a salute! Thanks! (grin)

I had to stop and read the whole adoption story first. What a neat thing. God put it in your hearts to prepare you, and then He made it happen.

About my Avatar: Tia Turtle is a character in a new book by Gena Suarez, "And Then Mama Said...It Takes Time to Learn to Read." Kevin Collier is the illustrator and he made me my special avatar, because yes, Tia Turtle is named after Me! (Okay, so I'm bragging. Leave me a correctional comment in love.)
