As autumn settles in and the weather turns cold, my family enjoys an activity that doesn't take place in the Spring or Summer.
We light candles and stumble around in the semi-darkness. This is supposed to create a calm and cozy atmosphere. It also helps to gather everyone around for a little family time. While sitting around the open flame we all squint our eyes and tip our heads this way and that creating our own laser light shows.
This of course brings up questions about how our eyes work, why we think we can see something clearer when we squint and why some people have a hard time driving at night because headlights cause this same star effect that we see while looking at the candle light with our eyes squinched up.
Electric toothbrushes have also brought up a conversation on our eyesight. With the toothbrush on, and in your mouth, go stand in front of a digital clock. Brush your teeth and watch the numbers on the clock. The numbers jump all around! Now stop your toothbrush for a moment and observe how the clocks numbers are still. Turn your toothbrush back on. The vibration from your toothbrush cause your eyes to vibrate but you don't notice it while looking at other objects such as the sink, or the picture on the wall. Why is this? I personally have no idea but it's a fun thing to do.
You can find some great eye activities HERE.
