• Jan. 16, 2007 - Adorned with Modesty Interview on Porch

Finding pretty, modest clothing is getting harder and harder.  I often shop at thrift stores to get what I need at a decent price.  What I find so disturbing is the trend for a super store to try and appease the modest dressers with one or two pieces of modest apparel.  The problem is that while the skirt may be longer in length and not skin tight with a slit up past my knees, there is nothing to go with it!  No slip to go under that flimsy material, and not a modest top sold in sight.  Not to mention all the large sparkly eye-catchers for crows that are sown on!  I have no desire to wander around looking like a gypsy that's attempting to escape The Birds.

One tip I have for finding modest dress for your teen age daughters is to shop in the ladies department instead of the teen department.  The teen department caters only to fashion slaves, while the ladies department caters to the working woman as well.

If you'd like to read about more ideas then check out the interview with Trisha Reschly , co-owner of Adorned with Modesty on the Company Porch!

Ohhhh, do NOT get me started on clothing fashions for girls. I'm apalled at what is displayed on the racks for the under 7 age group...completely inappropriate!! Now, that's a very clever tip..shopping in the women's dept. DD is already in a size 10 because of her height (and is only 6 years old)...see my impending dilema? 8 years old shopping in a department with shorts that are 4" x 4"!

I have enough problems finding modest dresses for myself. It makes me thankful that I have a son. But then again, it makes me sad that this is what he has to gaurd his heart and eyes with.

I could go on about that forever!! Have you looked at the stuff in size 2T? I can't believe that they would put it on Toddlers!! Most the dresses or skirts dont even cover the diaper!!! Hello what are they trying to teach their girls??!?!?!!? Precious got a gift certicate for Sears for her b-day so I took her in to find a cute outfit and they had NOTHING under $35. that completley covered her and its WINTER!! So she picked out a bag that works great to carry her my little ponies. Hmm now the rest of the money may just go to some undies.

We just have boys here, so it's just me that has to go beyond our local stuffmart to find modest clothing. Yes, I start out at the thrift shop and then sometimes check out ebay (although I have been disappointed by the wrong fit a few times). When I have time, I try to sew. Even with boys, it's hard to find t-shirts that have decent sayings/pictures on them. They might be modest, but very inappropriate otherwise.

This has been going on for years. I wish I still had time to sew--that's what I did for my girls, because the clothes in the misses' dept. either didn't hang properly (way too big in the hips) or looked "too old" for them. I think the enormous amount of clothing on clearance racks should tell merchants that there are lots of us out here who are not impressed with what they're selling!
PS If God ever sends me a windfall, I'm going shopping at Coldwater Creek---they have nice things!

I am learning to sew...JUST so my girls and myself can have modest clothes. The stores are hopeless! Thanks for the post, I'll go check out the front porch.

About the turtle: Tia Turtle is a character in a new book by Gena Suarez, "And Then Mama Said...It Takes Time to Learn to Read." Kevin Collier is the illustrator and he made me my special avatar, because yes, Tia Turtle is named after Me! (Okay, so I'm bragging. Leave me a correctional comment in love.)
