While driving in to town today we were rushed by a large hairy rodent with fangs. I tell you it gave me a fright! Rockchucks are nothing to mess about with if you are a sage rat. Oh, they look cute enough while sunning their tummies in grassy town lawns, but trust me, they are vicious creatures that like to suck the vegetables out of gardens grown to feed sweet little sage rats.
Fortunatley for me I was at the helm of a large gas-guzzling mode of transportation. That rock chuck thought twice about taking me on. He stopped short and as I whizzed by I stuck my tongue out at him. I'd of waggled my hands at him but they were busy with the steering wheel.
Edited to explain that in some parts of the country they are known as a yellow bellied marmot. Rockchucks are cousins to the woodchuck. Rockchucks live in a hole in or near rocks. They use the rock as a lookout perch.
If I get a chance I will take a photo of one to show you. In the meantime you can take a look at one HERE. |
