I got a late start on my day, waking up at 8:00 a.m, instead of 7:00. I wearily made my way thru the house to the children's bedrooms only to find them all sitting at the table doing their school work. Everyone had a book open, and/or was writing in notebooks. It was the perfect homeschool picture. To bad I didn't take one!
I stood there for a few moments, blinking my eyes, and yes I really did wonder if I was dreaming! I finally came to my senses, and walked around the table planting kisses on each angelic head. They smiled conspiratorily at each other, but kept up their work. Even Tiki, who usually has to be re-focused every ten minutes, was working like a scribe with a deadline.
I asked them how long they had been at it, seeing several items on my chair for correction. "Since 7:00," was the reply. I commended them for their diligence and good behavior, as I had not heard a single bicker, arguement, or impending battle.
Of course the question has to be asked, "Just what are those squirrily monkies up to?" I did not ask them this because I knew that time would tell. Two things became obvious: 1. They wanted to get their work done so they could play. 2. For that piece of time their hearts were filled with love for me! What joy!
They had truly desired to impress me with their obedience to the rules, and to do so to the full extent of what has been asked of them. The children were ecstatic to have pleased me.
Due to the great morning start, the rest of the day was nearly perfect as well, and a true delight! Praise the Lord! The only stumbling blocks were those pesky math problems that are so hard to understand. Perseverence won the day on those as well and everyone was done before lunch!
Does it seem ungrateful to wish there were more days like this one? If they can do it once, why can't they do it all the time? I have satisfied myself with this; they are striving for the mark, reaching for the prize, and just like a high jumper, they will miss many times before they finally nail it more often than not. There is hope for them yet!
I wonder if I should sleep late tomorrow.
