• Nov. 17, 2005 - Scientific Observations

I'm not terribly observant of the natural world.  I like to look at the beauty God has created, and I marvel at the variety.  My favorite hymn is, How Great Thou Art, in which the first verse is O Lord My God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds Thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy pow'r thru-out the universe displayed!

But, alas, my eyes only see the surface beauty of this spinning rock called Earth.  Once I am shown the deeper intricacies of this working world, I am even more amazed at how mighty our God is.  I just need someone to point it out to me.  What I'd like to know is how on earth did anyone ever figure it out?

I once saw a documentary about some tribal people.  They would get the leaves from a plant and take it with them fishing.  Once out in the water one of the men would dive in and start rubbing these leaves.  The leaves released a toxic chemical that 1. attracted fish, and 2. stunned them so they would float to the surface.  The men still in the boat would then collect the floating fish to take back home for dinner.  The whole process needed to be done quickly because the chemcial also attracted sharks.

So here's the question;  Who was the first guy to wander through the forest, picking leaves haphazardly and stuffing a few into his pocket?  He then decides to go for a swim and he begins to notice that where ever he goes fish are bobbing like ice in a punch bowl.  The little light bulb goes off in his head as he makes the connection, but it is to late!  He's eaten by the shark who came to investigate the swirling mass of gumbo.

Next day, another guy is walking through the forest collecting some leaves to make a hat.  He decides to head down to the shore to soak them first.  Next thing he knows he's being stared at by one hundred fish which are all listing south.  The light bulb goes off in his head and he heads back to the village to gather his buddies and tell them all about it.  One of them remembers that the fellow from yesterday had picked this same plant but it had brought about his demise.  They decide to do a few test runs with the village idiot.

There you have it!  Science at work.  1+1=2.  For me it's 1 + what am I supposed to do with this one again?  Oh look!   There's another 1, I'll put it with this one over here, and now I have a collection I need to dust.  I'm not very good at drawing a conclusion.

My Aunt commented one day about some Russian Olive trees in a pasture she had.  They were all in a straight line.  I asked her if they had planted them there and what for.  My aunt is not the condescending type so I was saved from humiliation when she just matter of factly told me how the trees got there.  Long ago the pasture had been divided with fence.  The birds ate the berries from other Russian Olives, would sit on the fence, and well, deposit the seeds.  Being so well fertilized they grew into Russian Olives in a beautiful straight line.

I contemplated this for a moment and realized that once again common knowledge of science escapes me.  I knew that birds ate berries and deposited them making a tree grow somewhere else.  It just never occured to me they could be so orderly about it.

The great thing is, that I can still admire all that is in this wonderous universe but I don't have to understand it to know that God did it.  Each piece of information only causes my wonderment to grow about a loving God who created all of this so that I could live in it.  The minute details really have no bearing on who I am in this big pond, but on who God is in this tiny puddle.

I am always wondering how things are thought up. Sometimes I find myself giggling to myself (much to my embarressment) about some of the story lines I come up with. Nice to see you do it too!

I really enjoy your writing style and the thought-process you reveal in your writing. This is the first time I have stopped by but I throroughly enjoyed this read the intricacy you brought to its meaning by revealing your own journey of thought. I must add you to my blogger buddies for quick reference!

what a cool story about the olive trees. I would have just assumed somebody planted trees in a straight row.

About my Avatar: Tia Turtle is a character in a new book by Gena Suarez, "And Then Mama Said...It Takes Time to Learn to Read." Kevin Collier is the illustrator and he made me my special avatar, because yes, Tia Turtle is named after Me! (Okay, so I'm bragging. Leave me a correctional comment in love.)
