Our homeschooling journey began 11 years ago. In that time we have used several types of curriculum, of course written by all kinds of people. There have been quite a few that I needed to ditch. I would look the materials over at the curriculum fairs, bookstores, library, and catalog blurbs, only to get them home and begin using them to discover that this book was not for us! The reasons vary from the authors world view, needing to gather way to many materials on my own, or being way to old for my children. Some have even been way to old for me even though the book claimed to be for a 5th grader! They must have meant a fifth grade genious. Still, we learned something in the trying.
We have found a great many books that we love on various subjects and various authors. Writers who have researched their subject, and written their "story" from all sorts of angles.
Each one teaching us something a little more, opening our eyes, and minds. Some of these books have been alike, several have been unique, but all of them have taken us into history and science with an end to educate the reader.
Imagine my surprise when I was confronted by someone who is against homeschooling with this comment, "Children need to be taught by different kinds of teachers so that they can see things from different points of view."
I knew there was something very wrong with this theory but I couldn't quite put my finger on it until later. I'm like that, I can recognize a falacy, I'm just not sure why it's one until I've thought it over for an hour or two.
My children don't have just one teacher. They have one facilitator who points them in the direction of different teachers. Every time my child reads a book they come in contact with an educator.
The Bible was written by many authors each one inspired by God, but each one with a different perspective and style. We all need more than one teacher. How exciting that we need only one book to teach us about one Savior! |
Oh well...at least we're not alone :)
