• Aug. 8, 2008 - If I took an Art Class, I'd Get an "F"

I'm not a great artist. If I entered a stick figure drawing contest my entry would come in last. I don't even do that many crafts. I'm color coordinating challenged and all that tedious work bores me to death.

I'm not even all that great at understanding art. I was watching some Sister Wendy videos because I thought maybe she could help me understand great works of art a little better. I learned that for a nun she sure talks a lot about s*x. It's what nearly every painting she showed in her videos was all about.

Now when I look at a piece of art I see some people who look happy or they don't. I see blotches, splashes, and blurry things. I see lines, curves, and angles. I don't see anything in all that mess, unlike other art lovers who see an anguished soul or the beauty of the wind or some ridiculous thing. I think the artist was drunk or nuts, not talented.

Sister Wendy would point out that the reason this painting had a building on one side and a forest on the other was to show the futile attempt of man to take control of life or some such thing. I just figured the artist painted that way because that's how it looked. The building was here and the forest was over there. Sister Wendy saw something in why a woman in the buff was sitting on her cloak instead of wearing it. Something very deep. I just figured the rock was too rough for her hiney and she was just trying to protect herself from a rock burn or bugs.

Cities are getting into displaying art about town. Most of which look like a bunch of blocks that were thrown up by a dinosaur. People write into the local paper to say that they can see how the structure represents "peace" and "love". I just see really ugly semi-organized metal that someone wanted to get off their property and the town was foolish enough to buy it.

I don't "get" art. I'm too literal or something. Tonight though I was reading over at tn3jcarter's blog and I just loved how she described the picture of her three sons. It was perfect. It was right. I got it. Perhaps because her description brings glory to the Lord. That I can understand.

No when you say 'blocks that a dinosaur threw up' did you mean that they threw them up on top of each other or that they vomited them up??? :o)

Thanks for your comment. The really CRAZY thing is that our house was actually £50 LESS per month than the one they chose!?!? Ours also cost £150 LESS for the bond (deposit) and we had a drive way and garage included in the price where that one has no storage at all and on street parking! That is what has left us scratching our heads. We could have understood the comment if we had been more expensive, but we are too nice even though we are cheaper!!! They chose to pay more for a place that is actually a dive (we went to look at it). Oh well!

I'm literal right along there with you!!! My stick figures could be mistaken for a scrawl made by a worm that fell into ink.
I do agree with the photo your friend took and her wise words about our children's hearts.

I was raised in the art world and I still don't get a lot of it. My big teen thinks the Sister Wendy dvds are full of shocking scandal. Thanks for visiting my blog.

My sentiments exactly. My daughter, Breezy, and I have talked about this exact thing before. She reads a lot of artsy books and she gets so frustrated with the "art critics" who explain what the artist was trying to portray in this or that painting. She says maybe they just wanted to draw it like that, with no motives behind it. It does seem most "art critics" are too obsessed with certain themes, too. We have learned it is just best to look at the paintings and not to read or listen to the critics.

I'm with you... for the most part. :-) But, now, with a very artistic husband and 11-year-old son who is very creative, I am seeing things at a little different level. Of course, I still don't go for nudity because that goes against God's standards, but now I can "feel" the warmth or coolness of a picture by the colors that were used, and more simpler things like that. I probably never will reach the same level as my son in art, but I still appreciate the talent that God has given him.

I feel the same way about literature. Does an author write with all that supposed symbolism, or does he just write to entertain? Why can't we just enjoy the story and leave out the analysis? Oh wait! We can. We homeschool. :o)

I was reading through your entry and thought, "Oh man, I bet Tia thought my entry about the path was really hokey" before I saw where you actually commented about my entry. ha!

I'm not very insightful with art, but I do LOVE photographs!

tee he I was taking a quote from the movie "water boy" -not a movie I recommend seeing- and the mom kept calling foot ball foose ball. It was just a play on what she said to go along with myself being too girly to even know what I am really talking about.

Thanks for checkin my blog out!

Okay so I had to laugh at all the visuals you gave! Yes, I've never understood all the symbolism these art critics can pull out of a single cube in the middle of a field of blue much less a woman in the buff, to me she's just naked! Sorta makes me think of the whole Emperor's New Clothes attitude ( Maybe we can convince them it's art if we act like it actually is).

Thanks for stopping by my blog! March was only a couple of months ago, right? ;^)

Anyway, I totally agree about the "modern art". When I look at a picture or painting or whatever, I either like it or I don't and I don't really analyze why or how it makes me "feel". Now, what I DO like are those neat animals made of scrap metal that you see in people's fields as you drive across the country. Those are cool! Good use for old bed-springs, too. :^)

About my Avatar: Tia Turtle is a character in a new book by Gena Suarez, "And Then Mama Said...It Takes Time to Learn to Read." Kevin Collier is the illustrator and he made me my special avatar, because yes, Tia Turtle is named after Me! (Okay, so I'm bragging. Leave me a correctional comment in love.)
