I've had three proposals of marriage. The first was when I was a freshman in high school. The boy I was dating was a senior. Just before graduation he asked me to marry him. I was rather shocked. I had no desire to run off and leave school, even if I didn't like it.
The second proposal was by my Dear Man. He asked me to marry him while he was in a phone booth in Washington state. I was at a pay phone in California. Not exactly romantic.
My third proposal came about five years ago. Tiki asked me rather suddenly, "Will you marry me?" I told him I couldn't because I was already married to his Daddy. He then asked, "Can I marry you when he's done with you?" I laughed one of those light tinkly sort of laughs, the kind that let him know I was pleased with him, but found him funny. I snugged him up close and told him that some day he would grow up and would want to get married and it probably wouldn't be me. This story embarrasses him senseless now. Girls are quite disgusting to him, excpet the one that has his heart, but in no way shape or form would he think of actually kissing her! Tiki knows that when you get married you have to actually kiss your spouse, on the lips! UGH!
Today Cheeko didn't actually ask me to marry him. Instead he asked if he could buy me. I asked him why and he said, "Betause that would mate you mine." I looked around at him to see if he had a club to hit me over the head with and then drag me off by the hair. He didn't, just a sweet little face staring up at me adoringly. I realized that he knows nothing of proposals and marriage, only that if you want something you have to buy it. He should know this very well by now as we have had problems with him stealing and have told him this many times. Today I just told him that he didn't have to worry, I was his own dear Mommy and he needn' t pay for me. He was happy with this answer and went off to play.
Someday Tiki and Cheeko will grow up and get married. They will move away and have a family. When they do, it will be a sweet memory to know that I was their first love.
