• Feb. 25, 2006 - Comfort Food

Why do they call certain foods, "comfort foods?"  Macaroni and Cheese is considered a comfort food.  Do people associate it with their mother and childhood?  I know people who don't like macaroni and cheese.  As far as I know, they like their mothers.

I don't like plain macaroni cheese.  I like things mixed into it, or fried.  My mother never mixed anything into our macaroni and cheese.

While wondering about what a comfort food was, I pondered what foods bring me comfort.  Pepperoni pizza is one.  Not just any old pepperoni pizza mind you, the pepperoni must be crispy!  I think the reason it's a comfort food for me is that it always reminds me of Papafather.  He used to take me to a pizza parlor called, The Grizzly Bear.  It had a large grizzly fur stretched out on the wall, as well as old fashioned signs, newspapers and pictures.  The Grizzly Bear did this long before it became common practice in other restaurants.

It saddens me everyday I have to drive by the building that The Grizzly Bear used to be located in.  It went out of buisness and several other pizza parlours have been in there, but now it's a sports pub with half naked women dancing in it.  My home town has given way to smut.  It's like seeing an old friend go astray.

I like pepperoni so much that I make pepperoni salad.  Put some lettuce in a bowl, add cheese, olives, and cooked crisp pepperoni quarters.  Top with ranch dressing.  Yum!

What do you consider to be your comfort foods, and why do you think that they are?

Mostly chocolate, but not with nuts. I like nuts, but not in my chocolate, or in my ice cream. (I'm strange that way-I also like meat, but not steak, and I like cheese, but not on my burgers) - those were not comfort foods btw.

Dr.Pepper, not a food, but is a comfort.

Chips Ahoy cookies, and M&M's.

My comfort foods are my comfort, because, my mother let me have them all the time, just to get me to shut up. Maybe it was for her comfort!

gets my vote but us that a food?
Anything I ate a s a child brings comfort. Red Rice and other spanish foods. Actually white rice & tuna fish (canned) does it too. It was just something we ate. It reminds me my mom. Cheese Cake is something that is a comfort food (hee hee) and greasy home fired french fries.
Now I am hungry!.

Lets see... I have quite a few foods that I would consider comfort foods. First is baked macaroni and cheese, pizza, just about any kind of chowder or cream soup, Chili, Mashed Potatoes, Bread Pudding, Sticky Toffee Pudding, (to die for) Molten Chocolate Cake and brownies.

Believe me, I could go on, and on!

Oh my goodness. Pepperoni pizza with black olives is my favorite. My husband makes fun of me because I'm so unoriginal. He thinks I should like bbq chicken or taco pizza or pizza with a green sauce. I'm sorry but those just are not pizza. I love good food, gourmet food but when it comes to pizza, pepperoni is best.

I think you can guess what my comfort food is....CHOCOLATE!!! This isn't exactly food, but it comforts me when I feel I need it (If I have the chocolate...hint, hint).

I miss The Grizzly Bear too, although when I knew it is was Abbys.

Hmmmm. Warm, lumpy applesauce is something I've never had equalled. Ever. My stepmother made it every year, so when I eat applesauce I notice that it's never as good, and never lumpy enough...and usually not warm. :) So it's comforting to eat it...whenever she gets the good Hood River Apples.

great question.

i just wanted to say that i feel the same way you do when i drive by my great grandparents old house. i have such fond, wonderful memories of my childhood with them in it. i can remember every crack and crevice of their home. well, now it's gone and there's some attorney's office there. it's one of those big stately looking places....yuck. i remember a hedge around the house where i would jump with my grandmother's poodle. i'd pretend we were in a dog show. my great grandfather would walk to work every day and mowed the biggest yard each week. he lived to be 90 something. there was also a HUGE pecan tree in the yard and a fish pond with the biggest goldfish in it. i'd take leftovers (bread and such) and feed the fish after dinner (which was really lunch). they called the evening meal supper.
oh....i think i need to go post about my memories .......

Chocolate! My favorite is a nice cold glass of chocolate milk, 2% not skim.

It seems so long ago now but I used to work at the "bear" in redmond from '76 to'83. I haven't found a pizza that tastes like the "bears". I live in North Carolina now and about my only selection seems to be Pizza Hut. Thanks for the memories.

About my Avatar: Tia Turtle is a character in a new book by Gena Suarez, "And Then Mama Said...It Takes Time to Learn to Read." Kevin Collier is the illustrator and he made me my special avatar, because yes, Tia Turtle is named after Me! (Okay, so I'm bragging. Leave me a correctional comment in love.)
