Each night for a couple of weeks now I have gone out and looked at my goats to make sure they were not about to kid. Last night I found that my goat Ebony was looking like she was ready. I woke up at 4 a.m. and went out to check on her and she was having contractions.
I went in and woke up the girls so they could be there for the blessed event. We snuggled up on and under sleeping bags on the milking stand. We had a cat curled up with us and we sipped hot tea and cocoa.
We chatted and told jokes and observed Ebony stand up, lay down, chew cud, eat hay, and get a drink. Over and over again! Finally Girl 2 headed into the house to go to bed, Girl 1 followed behind to do her chores and start school, and I curled up on the goat stand and fell asleep.
We took turns through out the day having someone keeping an eye in the goat barn, while the rest of us went about our day. Finally just after 2 p.m. today Ebony delivered two healthy bucks. Does would have been preferred, but we still have two other does that will kid soon; hopefully they'll have does.
So, here they are, our buck kids! Andy Taylor and Barney Fife!

Yes, they are in the house. It is so very, very cold outside and our goat barn isn't designed to keep the wind out. That and Ebony nearly killed one by trying to lay down on it.
We keep them in a box, and they will actually spend the night in the pump house. Oh, for those that don't know, or are wondering, they are Nubian goats.
Finally, we can start milking again! |
I LOVE the names you've picked for them-- too funny!
Love,
Marsha
