• Mar. 11, 2006 - Weird or Real

I've been thinking quite a bit lately.  Don't laugh!  I have heard and read about people who knew some homeschoolers, and thought they were weird.  When asked to explain how these children were weird, those who believe they are stating fact would say something like this, "They don't act normal."

So, just what is the complaint really?  They don't act like you?  They aren't hung up on fashionable clothing, don't watch perverse television, don't listen to mind scrambling music, actually enjoy learning, speak in complete sentences, and horrors, love to spend time with family members!  Above all, they aren't the least bit concerned about the world's opinion of them.  Sheesh, these people don't want to be anything like you!

I mean really, who wouldn't want to act like normal people?  A slave to fashion, immune to perversity, drugged by disorganized tones, disdain education, have the communication skills of a cave man, disrespect the very people who have the most to offer you and  become jealous when you can't be like every other normal person.

It sounds to me like these anti-homeschoolers are the people who aren't normal.  They aren't free, they aren't original. Carbon copies of the automaton next to them.

Homeschoolers aren't normal.  They're just real.

Homeschoolers also don't know how to relate to back-stabbing, gossipping, "catty" behavior. They are actually shocked when it is discovered a 15 year old is pregnant (and not married), they truly believe a friend should stick by you through thick and thin, and they also believe a "Christian" should act like Christ everywhere, and not just at church. For that reason, they become disgusted with church should they venture into the public school relm. (Just ask my ds17 and dd14. "Normal" isn't a good thing. Amen, Sister!

Exactly! I tell my daughter all the time that we are supposed to be a "peculiar people", set apart from the world. And that's good....'cause we were peculiar already! LOL

I agree, when people tell me that I will make my child weried by homeschooling her that she just wont fit in with the "normal" kids I ask them what is normal. It shuts them up pretty quick!

Those "abnormal" children actually enjoy conversing with adults and playing not only with their own siblings but other children in a wide range of ages!! Crazy, I tell you!!

Oh, yes. We are certainly freaks...I am reminded of that every Saturday at gymnastics while I sit and listen to whatever new issue their children are suffering with thanks to their peers...

Sigh.

About my Avatar: Tia Turtle is a character in a new book by Gena Suarez, "And Then Mama Said...It Takes Time to Learn to Read." Kevin Collier is the illustrator and he made me my special avatar, because yes, Tia Turtle is named after Me! (Okay, so I'm bragging. Leave me a correctional comment in love.)
