• Jan. 29, 2007 - Chore Chart Review

Posted in Book Reviews

I'll admit it. I'm lazy.  So lazy in fact that when my children do their chores I don't get up and mark or distribute their points or dollars or whatever they have earned dependent upon whatever chore chart is the flavor of the school year.

Enter My Reward Board!  This computer program is cute and colorful, with interesting facts, jokes and puzzles thrown in for fun.  Parents pick the chores from a list or write in their own, and decide how many points their child will receive and which coupons they can work for or how much allowance will be earned.  You can even add daily reminders on the chart, help your child work on certain behaviors and add their schoolwork to be checked off as completed!

Children get to mark off their chores with fun faces with  just a click and drag of the mouse.  The best part is that parents don't have to keep track of the points earned!  The program does that for you and will even show your children how far they are from their goals.

My Reward Board has a 15 day free trial and then is $19.95 if you choose to buy it.  It's not a subscription, so there is nothing more to buy ever!

I was just told about this great program so I don't know how it will work out in the long run, but as the problem in the past has been me and not my children, (how sad is that?) I think this will be the best chore chart we have ever used!

• Jun. 22, 2006 - Books of Old

Posted in Book Reviews

I love going to yard sales and estate sales.  I dig through the books to see if I can find old books.  Good stories, with morals and values.  Hot Rod Road by Carl Henry Rathjen is one of my finds.

Nearly every night I read to Boy 1 and 2.  Hot Rod Road, is a story about a boy who likes to make fast cars and how he helps uncover a car stripping gang.  Sounds thrilling doesn't it?  There are whole pages that I have no idea what I'm reading.  Not because it's boring, it really isn't, it's the lingo, the jargon, the totally foreign language!

I should know the language, Dear Man speaks it frequently, he eats, breaths and lives hot rods.  I used to be a jet engine mechanic for pity's sake!  Still, while he prattles on about this and that I bat my eye's, smile and say, "It's shiny."

I digress.. this is about books, of old.  Hot Rod Road is a great read if you can find it.  Not just because of the thrilling story line, but because of the morals, respect, and the side story that even a hot rod builder needs to know algebra, so stay in school.

It's not a perfect story, but my boys are eating it up.  I think the best part is that this is a story about teen age boys and they don't have girlfriends!  Aside from the mother, girls aren't even mentioned!  Refreshing, especially considering the images you'll find today on calendars in your local auto shop.

Find an old book.  Read it and share it with us.  I think we are all looking for a good old book.
