• Apr. 8, 2008 - Of Dogs and Nefertiti

After taking a little lesson today on how to draw dogs and showing the finished product to my son Tiki (aka Kekoa) he said, "It has a neck like Nefertiti."

Only out of the mouths of the homeschooled...

• Sep. 19, 2007 - Need to Search the Bible?

There you are, sitting at your computer, surfing HSB, small child in your lap asleep, and there is no way you are going to move and wake him up.  Still, you really want to look up a certain Bible passage or you need a better concordance then the one the back of your Bible has to offer.  What to do, what to do.

You can now come here!  Take a look in my sidebar and find a little box that says Bible Search.  Type in your search word and click the arrow.  Wa-la!  Now you know!

Jealous?  You shouldn't be because the Bible says so, go ahead look the word up.  Besides you can have one for yourself, all you have to do is go sign up for it, follow the handy dandy instructions, and you too can be helping web surfers across the world look up that passage in the Bible.

I'm so impressed with mine, I may just spend a few days looking things up.  If you don't hear from me just know that I am working on my relationship with the Lord by reading His Word.

• Dec. 27, 2006 - Happy Birthday for the 100th Time!

Last night we were invited to atten the birthday party of a very special lady who had turned 100 years old!  Family and friends shared their memories of this spry woman with us all.

This past summer the birthday girl fell outside and broke her hip.  When she was finally found by the family and taken to the hospital, her daughter asked her how it was that she didn't have a sunburn anywhere.  The reply was this, "I tried to roll so that I would brown evenly."  Still sharp as a tack and quick witted!

Along with the excellent food and friendly converstaions, there was an impressive performanc by the Rhinestone Ropers.  Two of my cousins were volunteers for the Bull Whip demonstration.  I laughed so hard to see my younger cousin (9) squinch up his eyes, and cover his face with his hands!  Not that I blamed him mind you!  Dan used the tip of the whip to cut up an object held in my cousin's hand.

Each of the children came home with trick ropes, and my Aunt was given a DVD that teaches you how to do several of the rope tricks.  Guess what's taking place at her house right now?  Everyone's a cowboy!

I just might learn a trick or two myself and keep a rope handy on my hip.  I'm sure it's just the thing I need to get the attention of an errant child.

• Jul. 18, 2006 - The Best Pooh Sticks Bridge

I had no idea when I wrote this post, that my blog would be visited by a myriad of Unique Self-Educating Referrer's wanting to know how to play Pooh Sticks.  (Which you can find by clicking on the link above.)

It would seem to me that if you have even heard of Pooh Sticks, then you should already know how to play it.  I don't think I have ever been in a conversation where the person I was speaking to went off ignorant of the rules.  They either already knew how to play, or asked.

Not only do U.S.-E.R.'s want to know how to play Pooh Sticks, they also want to know where the best Pooh Stick playing bridge is.  In order to be a user friendly website, I offer the following.

Multnomah Falls Bridge - Play at your own risk.

Rogue River bridge - You'll need a big stick for this one.

A swinging bridge - be sure and take Dramamine before you play.

Here's a bridge that is anti-Pooh Stick.

Let me give you a piece of advice, you asked for it!  The best bridge to play Pooh Sticks on is the one that will hold your body weight, as well as that of a loved one.

• May. 22, 2006 - Thanks to Randi, I'm Sew Crafty!

Before I show you my latest accomplishment, you need to know that I am not a terrific sewer.  In the last month I have done two sewing projects.  The one before that was over a year ago, and I never finished it.  The one before that was....I don't remember.  I just don't sew.

You need to know that, because Randi's weekly Sew Crafty projects are EASY!  It took me nearly four hours to complete this bag!

Knowing how my sewing projects usually turn out, I decided to just use some scrap material I had.  I didn't want to spend money making a bag that wound up looking like it had been through a nuclear plant leak.

The material is from the late 60's early 70's.  Remnants from my mother's sewing projects.   The outer fabric is more like a canvas, denim. The inside fabric is a brown short velvet.  I don't recommend using velvet.  It likes to creep ahead while you sew.  It was the only thing I had enough of that matched the bag.  The creeping made one of my seams not match up.  I compensated.  This bag will not win any prizes at the fair.

This project took me nearly four hours because I made some mistakes and had to rip them out.  The first mistake was how I sewed down the corners.  It's important to sew them down correctly.  The second mistake was the handles.  They need to be sewn IN the bag, not out.  Once you turn your bag inside out, this will make sense.  Which didn't to me at the time.  Until I sewed them on and turned the bag right side out.  Where in I had handle stubs to grip the bag with.  As I made this to be a book bag, it might be hard to grip handle stubs while the bag is full of books.

I'm sure someone of higher intelligence, and a stronger grasp of sewing skills could complete this bag in two hours.  At most.

Go make one, or two.  Then tell Randi, and me!

• May. 8, 2006 - Our Sew Crafty Project

Earlier today I told you about the Sew Crafty project of the week.  We were in desparate need of pin cushions in this house, and these look so cute and easy, that we made them!

Boy 1 made the red, Girl 1 made the floral, Girl 2 made the green, and I made the blue.

We learned a few things about them in the process.  STUFF them, but not too much!  Mine is the flattest, while Boy 1's looks like it may pop.  Girl 1 had the best stuff.  It was just right.  I also like how Girl 1 made only six petals instead of eight.  My perfect order world couldn't third a half even if it does come out even in the end!

We will definitely be making more of these for gifts.  They are fast, easy and fun!
