Balance in books

Posted in Balance

Alright, I confess. I am addicted to books. I always have a pile near me. And I never have enough time to read them all. From talking with my other homeschooling friends, I have found this to be a common theme amongst homeschoolers.

So here are my questions to all you book addicted homeschoolers:

How do you decide which book to pick up?

Do you finish every book you start?

Do you read much fiction?

Are you able to put a good book down at night, or do you find yourself staying up way too late reading just one more chapter?

How do you cope with your addiction?

Every room of my house has little stack of books, okay not so little, lol) so that if I get a few extra minutes, I have reading material handy, even if it is taking a peek and reading just a page or two while I'm waiting for water to boil. I've found that it is like that with my homeschooling too. We have so many books that we are interested in that while they are fiction, we've found ways to integrate them, so that just about every subject has a book to go with it so we get extra reading time. I've practically pulled all nighters by having started a book close to bed time and just can't stand to put it down. I'll tell myself just one more chapter...and I don't stop until the end of the book!

In response to your comment on my blog...

You're too sweet... thanks so much for caring enough to check in on me... I was having contractions earlier... and once again wondered if maybe tonight... but I started cleaning the school room (I'm really almost done now) and they seem to have stopped. Tomorrow's the due date and I had one on that day... so we'll see...

Blessings to your weekend,
Amy

How do you decide which book to pick up?
Fiction: Whatever I am in the mood for. Non-fiction: Whatever appeals to the questions I have.

Do you finish every book you start?
Not since starting to read a lot more non-fiction. Fiction books are easy reads, I'll read them unless they bore me. Non-fiction is where you have to pick and choose what's worth your time.

Do you read much fiction?
Not lately, trying to retrain my mind.

Are you able to put a good book down at night, or do you find yourself staying up way too late reading just one more chapter?
Fiction: I could read a 400 pg book in one day without skipping a beat with my housework.

How do you cope with your addiction?
I get my books from the library, Goodwill, used bookstores, Sam's Club, Amazon's used books. I donate books to declutter. I still have books (yes, plural) on the shelf that I have not read yet. That's a true sign of addiction.

Happy Mother's Day
