Balance in my coffee addiction?

Posted in Balance

Mmm, that first morning cuppa joe. Then the second. Third? Fourth?

Okay, I am so addicted to coffee. I've been trying to consume a limited supply, but it is so delightfully good. Can you relate?

I am such a coffee snob. I like freshly ground, darkly roasted, good coffee. If it is not these, I will only drink the nasty black elixir in desperate straits (like I stayed up too late blogging & need caffeine to keep myself awake at church. And why is it as a general rule that church coffee is always bad?).

As with so many things, I need to find balance in my coffee drinking. I've been trying to hold off on the afternoon cup and instead pull weeds in my yard, but I've found weed pulling is even nicer with a fresh cup of brew.

If I were only so passionate about reading God's Word! I do read daily because I see the impact not reading has. When I do not read the Bible, my day is not so smooth. I am testier & not so patient. The reason for our chosen lifestyle gets fuzzy.

I've learned from experience that life is more peaceful and purposeful with a dose of God's Word each day, but why am I not all consumed by God's Word? Why am I less excited about reading than I am about my cup of coffee? Why do I have to fight my impulses to drink more in the afternoon, but don't even think about picking up the Bible again?

I love reading the Bible. I am always amazed how God speaks to me through His Word. Why then am I not addicted? Does my flesh speak so much louder than my spirit that I hear the cries for more java, but not for more spiritual nourishment?

My prayer is that God gives me a passionate heart for His Word, and that, if it is possible, my coffee addiction would be used to glorify My Lord. To God be the glory in all things.

And then we could discuss the topic of blog addiction...

You are so right. I want that desire, too!
I am happy for you that you found the Character Sketches books at the library. I didn't even think to look there. That's awesome. Have a great weekend!

This is an area where I too struggle. I am ashamed to admit, that I have to force myself to make daily Bible reading a priority. I want to read the Word daily, and do try, it just seems so easy to put off at times. I never quite thought of it like you just described, but it is so true, we all have such strong, overwhelming desires for other things in life, whether it be coffee, chocolate, or whatever, shouldn't our burning desire be Him? Thought provoking post.....Thanks!

My friends husband will brew a full pot of coffee - are you sitting down? - Pour a cup in his travel mug, then put the pot in the fridge! He will then drink a cup a day until it's gone. D-I-S-G-U-S-T-I-N-G!! I love to pour out his coffee and brew a fresh one for ME when I come over (I bring my own grounds, Foldgers does not cut it).

Anyway, I digress. I random blogged and found you. I so agree with your correlation 'coffee desire' to 'God desire'. Something to chew on. Thank you.

May. 20, 2006 - A cup of joe is easy...

You pour it in your larger than usual mug (yes, I have one and it probably equals 2 cups of joe). Add your sweeteners/milk/creamers whatevers, stir. I like to read while I drink, not usually the Bible. I'll look at the new book I got from the library, read a magazine, look at a book I want to read but haven't yet. Why not the Bible?

Because I feel that reading the Bible deserves a little more than just a casual sit down with a cup of Joe reading. It deserves my full attention, even my note-taking. The kind of reading I do at night when the kids are in bed and the dh is involved in tv watching.

The "rules" for Bible study nowadays really puts a stigma on it. You need to do it this way in order to gain true understanding or this way to really know God's word. Didn't Rick Warren just write a book about different ways to do Bible study? I wonder, how did people do it before all the opinions out there? : )

Hello. I used to drink coffee because my mum made the best coffee in the world. All of us became coffee drinkers because of her. But I developed stomach problems which stopped when I stopped my coffee. Sigh. I had to give it up. Now I have given up my tea because I am trying to figure out if it is the cause of my cough. It is certainly no fun without that kick from my tea. So I have been drinking one or two teaspoonfuls of coffee....shhhh. Don't tell my body. Ha ha.

Can I go off topic? Are you willing to try an online writing experiment with me. I've got Timothy, myself, you've got your two children plus yourself. Perhaps you dh would like to join in. Let's rope in two more families and start a chain story.

I still think that Axel's "Greetings earhlings" will make such a fun story. The whole idea is to take turns. From your family - each one adds a sentence to the story so that when you bounce it to me, we will add one sentence each and I will bounce it to the next family - any takers? We should not be so ambitious but try to end it in three rounds per family for a start. What do you say? Waiting to hear from you....

Have a blessed weekend. God be with you and your family.

Love and blessings,
Ai Boon

Now that would be my problem!

I don't drink coffee often. I like "frou frou" coffee that is nice and sweet. I like those flavored creamers. My drink of choice, however, is decaf iced tea. I feel guilty about *that* because I should be drinking more water!

But, good analogy here. :)
