I admit it does feel very strange to totally fly solo on the curriuclum thing. Today we just did our devotions, geography and science. We don't go very deep since they're only 3 and 2, but I still feel like I should be following some book or something that's more thought out and orderly. When I do things myself I feel like I might not be teachign it right or in the right sequence. I think that's just a mental thing, becuase God is over here cheering me on spiritually. This is all so very interesting. I had my heart set on going through a curriculum called Christ-Centered Curriculum for Early Childhood to teach them how to read and their numbers, but I haven't been able to get it yet. In the meantime, these people are ready to learn their numbers so I'm helping them any way I can. This is not what I wanted to do, but I feel God helping me so I guess this is where He's leading us right now. I was also pleased with our geography study (my mother-in-law just gave us an oversized book of maps so I taught them today where our country and state were. I also introduced them to our country and state's flag. I said the pledge of allegiance and we sang the national anthem. I have it in my mind to do that everyday until they konw it for themselves. I hope to continue saying the pledge and the anthem everyday to start school off when we officially start kindergarten). Our science study was just identifying different animals in our oversized animal book (again, that my mother-in-law provided for us. She's such a big help in our home schooling journey. I thank God for her positive involvement). The thing I was most impressed with was that we spend 15 and 10 minutes on those subjects. That's good. I didn't think they would last that long. Well, actually, my 2yo was off in his own world again, but my 3yo was attentive and seemed to understand. I'll just keep doing that until she knows it herself. Repetition is a great teacher! This is totally off topic, but I wonder how coloring matters to the development of children. Do they have to learn how to color within the lines before they can grasp some higher concept? Like catching a ball. I've heard that that helps their eye coordination and helps them later on when they learn to read. I wonder if coloring is helpful like that. Just a thought. So, this afternoon I'm not sure what we're going to do. They may go on that wonderful website again and reinforce their reading skills or they may practice their handwriting. They may also veg and watch a video. I'm trying to keep them away from that today so they can watch two long ones tomorrow. We totally veg out on the weekends. |

Yesterday, He gave me an idea for teaching the children how to think about their numbers. Both of my children are working on identifying their numbers up to 25, but I'm really working with my 3yo to also be able to visualize in her head what the numbers look like so she can write them down for herself and also get used to doing math in her head. She's been having trouble with her 20's so God gave me the idea to tell her that if a 2 is first it says "twenty". Then you just say the next number. That worked for her and she seemed to really be glad I told her that so I'm praising God for the success.
