School Of Crowes

Sep. 14, 2006 - Mesopotamia, Nomads and Nouns...

I didn't do all that well in school myself.  I never had a teacher that really liked me, not many friends either.  I was a pretty quiet kid.  I didn't understand why it was important for me to try to learn anything...

Today I learned about Mesopotamia, Nomads, The Fertile Crescent and lots more.  I actually understand what a proper noun and a common noun are now.  It is a lot of fun learning with Andrew.  Since he has to take it slow to master a concept or idea, I have time to learn myself.

Caitlyn and Caroline are fun too, but they are still trying to master cutting a straight or curvy line, phonics, writing and numbers.  Allison, who just turned two, is learning a little bit too.  Just the other day she wanted to color with her sisters so I put her in her highchair with her piece of paper and crayon.  She wasn't satisfied with that; she wanted Mommy to color with her...  I wrote out a 'B' and said 'Ba'.  A minute later, I asked her what that was and she immediately said 'ba'.  I thought it was just a fluke, but a few hours later, I did the same and got the same response.  The next day and the next afternoon, the same response!  I guess it's not too early to start on phonics with Allison either...

Oct. 6, 2006 - It's amazing what kids can learn!

I know what you mean. Little kids totally pick up on phonics! (Or at least girls do :).

I remember I went into my oldest daughter's senior kindergarten class the first day of school (she went to school for kindergarten) and volunteered to take two little girls to the washroom. They didn't know where it was so I said let's look for it. It's "WWWWashroom. What letter do you think Washroom begins with? W-W-W-Washroom?". They looked at me like I was a moron. I thought that was how all adults spoke to their children. That's how I always spoke to mine. But it turns out I was wrong.

That was probably why my daughter could read, and they couldn't. It's not natural intelligence, I don't think, as much as it is what the kids are exposed to.

And isn't it nice that your kids have a teacher who likes them? :).
