• Oct. 21, 2008 - Carnivores and Herbivores
This is about Carnivores and Herbivores. The difference between them is that carnivores eat meat and herbivores only eat vegetation. An example of a large carnivore is a T-Rex and a smaller Carnivore the Velociraptor. The Velociraptor is one of my favorite dinosaurs. My very favorite is the Archaeopteryx. The Archaeopteryx is a bird like dinosaur and is a omnivore. A example of a large herbivore is the Brachiosaurus and a small one is a Scutellosaurus. That's all for now!!

• Oct. 14, 2008 - Even more dinosaurs
This is about the world of the dinosaurs. Their world was hot, humid and tropical. The dinosaurs ranged from the ginormus Brachiosaurus to the the small Compsognathus, who was only about the size of a present day house cat. There was a group of dinosaurs, called Ornithomimids, that ran on two legs and (so we think) could run about as fast as a galloping horse. It is kind of hard to tell how fast they were from fossils so bare with me. Thats all for now!!

• Oct. 7, 2008 - DINOSAURS
Today I am writing about three time periods of the dinosaur age. The three time periods are called the Triassic, the Jurassic and the Cretaceous. These periods are all in one era. The Mesozoic era. In this era there was one big continent called Pangea and one big ocean called Panthalassa.
The Triassic is the very oldest period in the era. In the Triassic period we saw the very first dinosaurs. This period lasted roughly forty two million years. These small new creatures walked on their hind legs, and (I think) were herbivores.
The Jurassic period is the one in the middle, and it lasted about sixty two million years. In this period Pangea split into different continents and created different habitats for the animals. The animals, now in different climates, grew and changed. And (I think) a few moved on to be carnivores and omnivores. In the Jurassic period they changed appearance, started walking on all fours and grew GINORMOUS!! This is the time when the giants ruled.
The Cretaceous was the most recent and the longest period in the Mesozoic era, this era lasted about seventy nine million years. In the Cretaceous period there were a lot of big carnivores like the most famous, the T-Rex, and also there were the armored triceratops and the Hadrosaur (the Hadrosaur was a browser).
There are also dinosaurs from the Jurassic period and after that are still alive today, like the crocodiles and the shark. A big difference between now and then is they were a lot bigger along time ago then they are now. The ancient crocodiles were almost fifty feet long!!

• Jul. 2, 2008 - help for the Columbian white tailed deer
More about the Columbian white tailed deer or odocoileus virginianus leucrus. Their habitat is more of riparian one. They live in Lower Columbia River and Douglas County. It was listed "endangered" in 1967. Although the population in Douglas County was removed from the "endangered" list we have not yet fixed the lower Columbia River population. Thats all for now.

• Nov. 28, 2007 - what heppens when you mix bleach and ammonia
when you mix Bleach and ammonia you get a very toxic gas called ammonium chloride. These are the formula's for both NaOCl(bleach) and 2NH3(ammonia) and when you mix them the formula is 2NaONH3 + Cl2(chlorine gas). It was used as a chemical weapon during World War I and later by Nazi Germany in World War II. If you still haven't gotten my point............. NEVER MIX BLEACH AND AMMONIA!!!

• Oct. 30, 2007 - california
this weekend I went to California. I was there for my grandpa's funeral. He was a Veteran so they had a honor guard. I went to the funeral in my boyscout uniform and I also had my O.A. sash on. When the honor guard saw me in my uniform he came up to me shook my hand and said "you are in the O.A., good job son. They wouldn't let me get mine." The next day we went to my aunt Kathleen's house. Right before we left my uncle Vince came up to me and said he was very proud of me. He said I was the only one there that got a handshake from the honor guard. I will always remember my grandpa's funeral as a happy day one because he is in a better place by far, and two because the honor guard recognized me for being a boyscout in the O.A.

• Oct. 24, 2007 - My O.A. ordeal
This month on the twelfth and thirteenth I went to my Order of the Arrow ordeal. The Order of the Arrow (O.A) is the national honor society in boy scouts and I had to be voted in by my peers in the troop( troop 210 ) to be a candidate. Then I had to go to my ordeal and I did a service project on scouter's mountain. The fact that they just sold it and that was probably one of the last camp's they are going to have there makes it even more special. One of my favorite part's was the morning after I got there, we were all saluting the flag and I look over to the side and there were two doe and an awesome buck coming out of the forest. When I told my mom she said that was a sign of beauty and power and that it should be really special and that is the way I remember my O.A. ordeal. For the service project my clan ( clan #6 ) and two other clans ( #5 and #3 ) were cutting back brush, but what I mostly did was cut down small maple and alder trees the biggest one was three inches in diameter. There were four tests, one: sleeping under the stars on only a ground cloth, two: an oath of silence, three: eating scant food, four: a day of laborious work. Then on the last night we had a feast and later that night we had a cracker barrel. A cracker barrel is a snack buffet with dessert's and crackers, meat, cheese and other yummy things. now I am a member of the order. There are three rankings, first is the member, then a brother and then a umm...... I forget sorry. got to go

• Jul. 9, 2007 - thought to be extinct
Did you know that people recently found the fresh scat of thoght to be extinct Tasmanian Wolf and the not fossilized carcas of also thought to be extinct Dodo bird?
The Tasmanian Wolf is thought to have been extinct for nearly sixty-five years. This animal was actually not a wolf, it wasent a dog either, which it also looked like. It was actually a marsupial. The largest carnivorous marsupial, and was closely related to the kangaroo and the wombat. it actually had a pouch!! Thus the Tasmanian Wolf's Latin name, Thylacinus cynocephalus, meaning "pouched dog with wolf head," reflects the animal's true nature as well as its similarity to the dog and the wolf. The last known Tasmanian Wolf died in Hobart Zoo in australia on sept.7,1936. Now, they think that there might still be a few in existance!
The Dodo was first sighted around 1600 on Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean, the Dodo went extinct less than eighty years later.
The Dodo's stubby wings and heavy, body tell us that the dodo couldn't fly. Yet scientists believe that the Dodo evolved from a bird capable of flight into a flightless one. When an ancestor of the Dodo landed on Mauritius, it found a habitat with plenty of food and no predators. It therefore did not need to fly, and, as flying takes a great deal of energy, it was more efficient for the bird to remain on the ground. Thus the flightless Dodo. I read on cnn.com that they just recently found a couple day old carcas of the dodo bird. thats all for now. |

• Apr. 30, 2007 - Three huge water falls!
There are three water falls that I think are the most amazing. The Niagara, the Iguazu and the Victoria falls. Niagra with out a doubt has the biggest amount of water. The Iguazu and the Victoria falls are seasonal. After alot of rain the Victoria and Iguazu falls flow of water can get up to sixty feet deep!!! As for the width of the falls the Niagara falls is 5,300 feet a little more then a mile, the Iguazu falls are 10,000 thousand feet and the Victoria falls are 5,700 feet!!! Niagara's cascade is the shortest at 167 feet, Iguazu is 237 feet and the Victoria falls are the tallest with 354 feet. Niagara is the most visible. There is not even one place where you can see even half of the Iguazu falls and when the Victoria falls are supposed to be the most beautiful the mist covers most of it. The Iguazu has the most beautiful setting deep in a tropical jungle though. That's all I have right now but I will write again soon |

• Apr. 9, 2007 - tillamook forest
On Saturday I went to Tillamook forest visitor's center and learned about the six year jinx on the forest . The jinx started in 1933 there was a big fire in the Tillamook forest. It happened three times 1933, 1939, 1945. The 1933 fire was the worst. As you already guessed they got better from there. The first burn was so bad that there was a giant mushroom cloud and the ash from that fire landed on boat's two hundred mile's away! I got to go into a tower that was really tall. They used it to spot wild fires in the forest and to warn the firemen. The tower was so tall and they didn't have lightning rod's so they had insulated stool's that they would stand on if there was a lightning storm so they wouldn't get shocked if lightning struck the tower. Then we went on a walk to collect forestry samples to press. That's all I can think of right now.
I will write again soon.

• Apr. 5, 2007 - the pet shop
I work at the pet shop once or twice a week. This week I learned about the fish disease ich or ick something like that. It's little white dot's that look like dust just blew on to the fish. If you ignore it for one night you will wake up the next morning to see all of you're fish dead and covered in white spots. Last week I did what's called PH testing in the fish tank's. PH is the amount of alkaline and acidity in the water. Most fish cant stand a lot of acid in the water. If the PH balance is off you're fish will die. There is a PH testing kit that I used and there was a card that told you the PH balance. The range on the card is 6.0 to 7.6. the safe range 6.8 is a little bit low 7.0 is great and 7.2 is a little high. If the balance is 7.6 then I put in a solution. The PH should go down in about ten minutes then I will test that tank again. This week I got to see three love bird's. They were AWESOME( there are really messy though)!!!! I also got to hold two baby rat's a savanna monitor lizard a tortoise and a golden tree frog there were some hermit crab's too. One rat escaped and we caught it!!!! I got a huge feather from a macaw. There was another macaw(not the one I got the feather from)named Lou she is a Catalina. A Catalina is a mix between a green-wing and a blue and gold it's is really cool and has a orange chest. We got to redo the hermit crab's tank because the dry sand got wet and it was supposed to be dry like a beach. We had to do that twice because the first time the sand got wet a gain.
I will write again soon |

• Jan. 29, 2007 - The Little Turtle poem by Vachel Lindsay
There was a little turtle.
He lived in a box.
Hes wam in a puddle.
He climbed on the rocks.
He snapped at a mosquito.
He snapped at a flea.
He snapped at a minnow
And He snapped at me.
He caught the mosquito.
He caught the flea.
He caught the minnow.
But he didn't catch me. |
