Mar. 18, 2008 - Your Quiet Time

Amanda always comes up with good ideas to discuss on the blog.  So I thought I'd once again take her lead.

She was asking how your QT with God looks.  Some interesting responses on her page - go take look.  And wouldn't you all love a Dad (he left a lengthy comment) like hers who obviously spends a lengthy time with God every day.  He is such a precious man!  So's her Mom (a precious woman that is!).

So anyway - my time with the Lord is very simple and not nearly long enough for my liking.

Generally it goes like this...

  • Read a short devo... lately it's been Streams in the Desert.  But just today switched back to My Utmost for His Highest.  I also added in another short one called George Muller on Faith - complied and edited by Lance Wubbels.  This is one in a series of 30 day devos ... others include writings from Spurgeon, Finney and Hudson Taylor.  If I don't have much time I skip the devo ... but I love them, because they get my heart centered and prepared for what God will say.
  • Then I use the One Year Bible.  I love that I just turn to the date and start reading and it's all laid out for you.  You don't have to remember where you left off etc.  Also I've given up trying to go back and read what I may have missed if I don't get to it one day.  That's too much pressure and just puts guilt on you.  This is supposed to be a personal relationship with God - not a test!
  • Then I spend time in prayer.  This is where I most want to improve.  It's not organized or has any structure.  I really need to establish a routine; I think it would be better for me.  But generally, I pray for my family, my school day, close friends who are ill, and prayer requests I've been specifically asked to lift up.  I pray for my church (oh that building!) and my Hearts to Serve.  That's a ministry of my women's ministry that I oversee.

And that's about it.  Please share what you do and any tips or insights that help you!

My routine:
1. I start by reading from the bible, first thing inthe morning. This year I am reading from one of those kind that sets a routine of some OT, some NT some Psalms and some Proverbs for each day. PreviouslyI just started in the NT and read till I reached the OT and then over and over..each year a new version...but for now its the NIV One Year Bile
2.I usually try to set aside one hour immediately after I wake up...but it spans from 40 minutes to one+ hours....and occasionally not at all.
2. While I am reading, if I come across something that reminds me to pray for something specific or I feel God poking me in the nose about something I stop and pray, sometimes even writing it out so I can remember to pray for it again later too.. then continue reading. When I finish my bible reading I read from an assortment of devotions..usually 3 a day from an assortment of about 10 of them that I have in my reading corner.
3. The devotions give me new things to remember to pray about...especially so that all my prayers arenot just repeat episodes of me begging God for a perfect life.
4. Then I pray for real encompassing everything from my reading, my prayer journal and the devotions of the day.

I also do not go back and try to catch up what I missed...pointless anyway because I never start at the beginning of a year..I always just start whenever I finish the last thing.

I don't have a routine yet---in fact, I'm just starting back to doing anything. I have a read-thru-the-Bible-in-a-year Bible that goes M-F, and has devotions right in it that are geared toward women. I do this at night, and pray afterwards. I'm not a morning person, so I find it better to do it late in the day rather than first thing when my brain is fuzzy. It sounds like you have a good thing going---good for you!
Bless you!!

can I just say that I LOVE LC? and that having been her roommate at one time, everything she says about her routine is completely true. She has amazing communication with the Lord.

So, Yeah, I agree, it is amazing to have a dad and mom like mine. I'm incredibly grateful.

Thanks for sharing your time with the Lord. I join you in desperately wanting my prayer time to be more organized or something. :) But, like you said, it's a relationship, not a test. That has been the most freeing thing about knowing the Lord....not being wracked with guilt on days that I don't get around to spending an hour with the Lord, but coming abck and knowing I'll get the same love and faithfulness regardless. :)

I am so looking forward to seeing you at the retreat. I'll be praying for you as you lead H2S. :) I do hope I can find a few minutes to chat amidst your busy-ness there. :)

Love you!!!
