Jun. 26, 2008 - My Kroger Deals This Week
The Kroger stores in my area double coupons daily up to .50 (in other words, up to a .50 coupon will be doubled, anything over .50 only counts once). I realize I am very blessed to have three different grocery stores in my area that double coupons (two of them double coupons up to .99). For those of you who do not have this opportunity, shopping the sales and using coupons are still worth it! For those of you who have this blessing where you live and do not take advantage of it, shame on you!
So here is what I will try to get out to Kroger for this week based on what was in the Sunday ad:
1) Cheez-Its (12-16 oz.) $1.98 Hubby loves the white cheddar ones, and the cheapest I can get them without sales and coupons is usually more than $2.75. This is a great deal!
2) Kroger brand Hot dog and Hamburger buns $1.00 for an 8-pack It has been a long time since I have bought buns, but I am thinking this is a pretty good deal.
3) Betty Crocker Fruit Snacks 3/$5.00 (about $1.66 each) I will combine with a coupon that is .50 off 2. The coupon will be doubled to give me $1 off, making them $1.16 each.
4) Ragu pasta sauce $1.55 each I will use a coupon for $1 off 3 jars making them about $1.22 each. I can get generic sauces for cheaper at my Super Target, but I do not prefer the taste of those.
5) Purex laundry detergent 2/$5 (this includes the HE ones) I will not be buying these as I get a Seventh Generation brand from Lowes Foods. However, I used to buy this brand, and I can tell you for these days, this is an excellent price for laundry detergent.
6) Bounty Basic paper towels .99 per roll. I will use a .25 coupon. The coupon will be doubled to give me .50 off, making it a .49 roll.
7) Lawry's Marinade .99 per bottle This is an excellent price even if you do not have a coupon for it. I will use a .50 coupon which will be doubled, making this a free item for me. I have two coupons, so I will get two free bottles!
8) Hormel marinated pork tenderloin (18.4 oz.) $5.99 I do not have a coupon for this item, but it is cheaper than the usual $6 or $7 it costs at my Super Target.
9) Organic red, seedless grapes $1.99/lb. I don't buy a lot of organic yet as I try to keep my costs down, but when a deal like this comes along, I cannot pass it up. Anytime I see organic produce offered for about the same price as regular produce, I try to get it.
10) Organic peaches and nectarines $1.99/lb.
Deals I will check on:
1) Steamfresh Veggies (10-16 oz.) $1.99 I know a 12 oz. bag at Super Target is $1.29. I need to compare the size and price to my usual store before knowing if this is a deal or not. Unfortunately, I don't have a coupon for these this week!
2) Nature's Own Bagels (22 oz.) buy one, get one free The price for this is not listed in the ad. This is fairly new and not something I have bought before. Still, two for one is usually a better deal than what I can get at Super T. And, I have a .55 off coupon.
I am editing this to add that I just looked at the ad that was in my mailbox yesterday, and I see some more deals because they are having a 4-day sale through Saturday. So here is what else I will try to pick up:
1) Breyer's Ice Cream $1.99 (Limit 4 per shopping trip) Can you say "AWESOME DEAL"?! The best price on these without a sale is $3-something at Super Target. Hubby is a big Breyer's eater so we will stock up on these and put them in our garage freezer.
2) Kroger Novelties (these are different frozen treats) 3/$5 (about $1.66 each) I will get some of these to stick in the freezer for my girls this summer.
Make sure you read here what I wrote on lowering your grocery bill!

Jun. 26, 2008 - Lowering Your Grocery Bill
There are only so many ways you can pay less at the grocery store. If you're already not buying excess (and not going through your supply too quickly...come on...you know who you are...those who go through a 12-pack of diet soda in a day or eat crackers, seeds, chips, or even fruits and veggies like they have never heard of a serving size), then you really only have two other options. Shop for sales, and use coupons.
One thing I have gotten out of the habit of lately is going to a few stores in a week to take advantage of their sales. When combining coupons with these sales, you maximize your savings. Now with the price of gas skyrocketing, you may be wondering how on earth you are supposed to go to more than one store in a week to get your groceries. Here is my advice for you: work it into your route. If you work, what stores do you pass on the way home. What stores does your spouse pass, or your children who are driving-what stores do they pass on the way home from school? Is there a Kroger near your daughter's dance studio? Is there a Harris Teeter near your son's soccer field? Do you pass a Food Lion on your way home from church? I am fortunate to have many different stores within a 5 or so mile radius from where I live, so I do not feeling like I am wasting time or money to get out and take advantage of these deals. On many Friday nights, Hubby brings home pizza from a place that has a Kroger right next to it. This is a great opportunity for me to send along a list and stack of coupons so he can grab any deals I found in the paper that week.
If you just do not have anything near you, then do what you can. Sometimes buying generic can be cheaper (don't be afraid to try generic/store brand...on most items it's just as good!). But often a name brand item will go on sale, and when combined with a coupon it can be cheaper than the generic version.
It's going to take a small effort on your part, but once you get used to taking a little time to shop the sale papers (or viewing the ads online) and organizing your coupons, you will find that you are saving money. So what if you only save $1.50 this week? It's SOMETHING! Try to never pay full price!
If you do not get the Sunday paper, or if ads do not come in your mailbox on Wednesdays, you can go to your local store's website. All of my local stores post their weekly ads online. Even some of the drugstores post their ads online.
No one is going to save money for you. Food and toiletries are not getting cheaper. Make an effort! Any effort! I may not shop this way each and every week. Some weeks, or even seasons in my life, just have not been conducive to that. But please realize it is within your power to spend less on groceries and ease the pain your wallet is feeling!
I will be adding another post soon listing the deals I am seeing this week and showing you how using coupons on those deals is getting me food for way less (sometimes even for free!).
I wrote here about coupon sources. I also wrote more about coupons here and here. I kind of lost my way in posting all the links to free stuff and great deals. While that is a big part of what I want to share with you, I also want to get back to sharing with you how I save on a weekly basis. Bear with me as I find time here and there to get that together!
