And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God...

• Jun. 5, 2006 - The many adventures of living with AK

AK(5yo) has been cracking me up and amazing me so much lately.  Here's a sampling of living with him from just the past week.

We were not able to do swim lessons last summer because of our move.  The summer before we had done 2 sessions of swim lessons and it took one whole session just to get him to go in the water.  By the end of last summer he was putting his face in the water.  This summer our Homeowner's association pool has a swim team and I signed up CJ but didn't think AK would be ready for it so I just signed him up for another session of swim lessons.  I decided to put him in the beginning class since I figured he would need time to warm up again.  Turns out he would be in the same class with 3yo little sister EF, convenient for me, maybe a little demoralizing for him.  This weekend we had our first chance at the pool and HE IS SWIMMING!!!  First, he's really grown since last summer so he can really play in the shallow end.  He's jumping in from the side(not too far), putting his face in the water and kicking!  So I e-mailed the swim team coordinator and he will be a SHARK along with CJ this summer on the swim team!  Ought to be pretty humorous to watch as the 6 & under kids get to hang onto the lane lines if they get tired or have the coach swim alongside them.

On the way home from church, we were discussing what the kids learned in Sunday School.  AK says "Did you know that if you don't read your Bible you will shrink?"  BW said "I think you mean, when you read your bible you will grow."  "No", he insisted, "If you don't read your Bible you will shrink."  Haven't had a chance to talk to the Sunday School teacher to find out what really was said, but it makes me giggle everytime I think of it.  It's almost as funny as the time he told me, again upon leaving Sunday School, that "God hit Eve for eating the fruit."  Apparently he didn't know there's a difference between the word punched and punished.

I noticed AK pulling out a switchplate from the junk drawer and was curious to see what he was going to do with it.  He told EF that he was going to play a video game.  He sat down in front of the TV(which was turned off), pushed a make believe button (made a sound that mimicked it perfectly) and proceeded to "play a video game" in front of a blank TV screen for about 10 minutes.  He made explosion noises, he yelled "Aah it's going to get me!" and "Got to hurry, time's running out!"  EF wanted to play too so he gave her a purse (the strings to the purse were "attached" to the TV) to use as her own controller.  So who needs to buy a playstation when you have an active imagination?

This one is from a couple months back, but had to add it.  CJ had a soccer game and there was a hill behind us that AK wanted to play on.  I walked with him to show him the boundaries/trees between which he could play.  Then I told him that if any stranger were to come and talk to him, to make sure that he came back to me right away and tell me.  "Do you understand?" I asked.  He nodded.  Then he said, "Mommy, what's a stranger again?"  Guess I have some more work to do in teaching about stranger danger, huh?

Stay tuned for more of the many adventures of living with AK!
