We had such high hopes last spring when we started our garden. We had planted corn, bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots and strawberries. We couldn't wait for summer and "harvest time". Well, we aren't sure exactly what we've done wrong, but we have not exactly reaping an abundant harvest. As I mentioned in an earlier post, we ate our 4 ears of corn and they tasted horrible! The corn stalks pretty much died in the heat so BW pulled them out this week. Our strawberry plants seem to be withstanding the heat, but are not making any strawberries. We are getting a little suspicious of the neighborhood squirrels. We've maybe had 10 strawberries total from 6 plants! Our cucumber has yielded 2 cucumbers, but I don't think we picked them in time because they don't look like the right color. Our bell peppers are growing into beautiful plants, but not a single pepper is even blossoming!
Then last night, BW found these on our tomato plants! A quick internet search revealed that they are hornworms. They are huge!! and so hard to see, but they have made quite a mess of our tomato plants.

Anyway, we are definitely grateful that we can go to a supermarket to buy produce and are not responsible for coming up with food all by ourselves becaue we would probably starve. Also starting to realize why organic fruits and vegetables are so expensive .
We still have hope for our carrots. The tops are big and leafy but when we pulled one out it's still only about 1-2 inches long so maybe we'll have those in time for Thanksgiving. There's always next year....
If you planted a garden, how's it growing? Hopefully better than ours...

That gross, green thing met its demise a little later...
thanks (I think!) for the memory - and we are not doing a garden today, since we are moving - we are only growing perennials and basil this year.
God bless - Liesl
